Sweetheart: A New Tradition With all the new additions occuring at the high school, it seemed only fitting that the Sweetheart Ceremonies should also be revised. Inheht the Wind The fall production 'tlnherit the Wind dealt with the controversial issue of the theory of evolution. Although evolution was the topic the nationwide interest in Scopest t'monkey trial resulted more from the prominence of the two lawyers Drummond tD. Bluckert and Brady tL. Rameo. The play was a big success with the added attraction of Jim McCune and his trained monkey, CHICO, from Toledo, Ohio. Upper Right: Members of the jury listen carefully while Matthew Harrison Brady tL. Tradition is the foundation of Jewish beliefs. Their traditions carry them through the good, as well as the hard times. However, times change, and as times change, so must traditions. This caused conflict and abrupt changes in Tevye's life. Fiddler on the Roof encom- passed the precarious position of those traditions in a changing world. Leads for this moving musical were held by Rich Bieve and Ann Neff. Others of the cast included: B. Sides, C. Yoder, I. Cook, N. Weldy, S. Johnson, J. Weldy, L. Ramer, D. Blucker. W. Johnson, J. Culp, and J. Loucks. The fiddler was Jessica Billey, a Jr. High student at Wakarusa. Left: Drunken during festivites, Lazar Wolf tW. Johnsont and Tevye tR. Bieveo struggle to hold each other up. The cast, formed from three diverse groups, worked together for a finished show. First, it was the students who enjoy thea- tre and have become Thespians. Sec- ondly, it was faculty who indicated an interest in being involved in some way. Thirdly, and for the first time this year, it was parents who are becoming involved in a drama project with their sons and daughters and their teachers. All three groups cooperated with time and effort; and most importantly, they gave of them- selves. The production was a success and enjoyed by the seli-out performance. TOP RIGHT: Ado Annie tA. Netti and Andrew 0. Bradyi listen as Ali tG. Reedi speaks. ABOVE: Gil Reed tParenO and Ann Nett iStudenD rehearse a few lines before opening night. FAR RIGHT: Curly tR. Behind the Scenes What would the Drama productions be like without make-up, sets, wardrobe and lighting? It just would not be the same without the behind-the-scenes person- nel. Committee work is as important as the production itself. As soon as the cast is selected, work begins for everyone. Committees spend hours before a pro- duction preparing cast members for their performance. But when the production is over, and the cast takes its bow, the applause of the audience is not only for them, but for the effort of all those who worked so hard iibehind-the-scenes. So a big Thank-You is in store for all of those who make the Drama Dept. and their productions a big success time after time. LEFT: Ann Neft helps Tracy Paulus with finishing touches of her wardrobe. By planning pep sessions, spirit weeks, and coming up with many ideas to get the students and athletes fired up, the cheerleaders contributed to the success of the 1980-81 Panther athletic year. The girls worked hard over the summer and it paid off as both Junior Varsity and Varsity squads won second place at cheerleading camp. The administrative secretaries and superintendents worked hard up town while the school secretaries, nurse, and principals worked here at the school. The school board met twice a month to smooth out the wrinkles along the way. The administration had many hours of planning and preparation that went into the new buildings and football field that were being added to the school. Also a lot of time went into trying to reach a decisionabouttheheatingsystematNorth- Wood. ABOVE: Seated: Mr. Dorsey, Superintendent. Standing: J. Lelle, J. Miller, Assistant Superintendents. It was rather confusing for students and cooks alone but soon cleared up. The cooks like it and students seem to also. The janitors did a real good job of keeping the school clean and neat. They studied crops, farm animals, and equip- ment maintenance, among other things. Ag was an elective class which directly coincided with Future Farmers of Amer- ica or FFA. Frank Williams was in charge of FFA and also taught the Agriculture classes. The FFA did many outside pro- jects like the slave auction held at North- Wood to 'isell each of the members to adults who owned farms and needed help. This helped the kids to earn money. They also worked on many other pro- jects. TOP: The siave auctioneers try to sell a student. LEFT: The slave auction at NorthWood. ABOVE: F. Williams teaches class. Frank Williams: Agriculture I. Many students were able to enter their projects in the annual art show. The creativity they showed in their sketches, paintings, and designs was well dispiayed. Everyone worked hard and did a great job. Advanced art stu- dents had a choice of taking crafts, jew- elry, commercial art, and textiles. BELOW: K. Brich works on an ink drawing of flow- ers. Students spent 4 hours a day at the Career Center. The time was spent doing classroom work and practi- cal experience. Other classes available were Mechanical Drawing, Auto Shop, and Television. They had access to excellent facilities and got a chance to meet lots of new people from other schools. ABOVE: R. Applewhite works on a permanent for her project in Cosmetology. Even though seniors were not required to take English, many did so that they could add to their knowledge or per- haps prepare for the harder English classes they would encounter if they were to attend college. There were five phases; ranging from easy to difficult and each course was nine weeks long. Classes ranged from Expository Writing, to Bible as Literature, Journalism, Voice of Youth, and others. This year teachers taught students the basics and the finer points of Auto Mechanics, mechanical Drawing, and Wood working. Many great projects were produced to the satisfaction of both the student and the teacher: resulting in accomplishment of something worth- while. These classes will help students bet better jobs after graduation, and will be used either in an occupation or a hobby. The students became quickly acquainted with Industrial Arts. D. The fall production, Inherit the Wind, was based on Scope's Monkey trials. It involved very serious drama and a thoughtful inter- pretation. There was hard work for each committee. The sets and ward- robe were set back fifty years which called for time consuming work finding character's clothes and constructing a sidewalk and an outside courthouse scene. The spring musical, Fiddler On The Roof, involved cultural dancing. The wardrobe was that of the Russian Jew soon after the turn of the century. This year's faithful officers were: President -Dean Blucker, Vice President- Rich Biever, Secretary-Jeane Weldy, Treasurer-Barb Culp. JUNIORS AND SENIORS: Row 1: B. Culp, L. Farmwald, D. Hartman, D. To earn money for this year's trip, the group put on children's productions throughout the year. The major productions put on by the Thespians was Oscar and Ham- merstein's musical, OKLAHOMA. For the first time. the Thespian production not only consisted of members and North- Wood faculty but also included parents of Thespians. SENIOR THESPIANS: Row1: C. Yoder, B. Culp, J. Troyer, D.
