Football Homecoming in October saw the addition of floats as the queer candidates and court arrived in their con¬ vertible. Following the introduction of each girl, Tammy Sheets was honored as this year's Homecoming queen. As Valentine's Day approached, Basketball Sweetheart festivi¬ ties were planned. Girls holding palm branches and the reading of a poem added to the half-time basketball ceremony when Jenny France became sweetheart. Competition for Junior Miss took place earlier in the year and saw several seniors competing for the title. Michele Miller was crowned Junior Miss and later traveled to the state com¬ petition. Each ceremony added its own color and mood, which will long be remembered by many. ABOVE RIGHT: Tammy Sheets reigns as 1971 Home¬ coming Queen. In spite of the various difficulties which post¬ poned Baccalaureate services and caused the combination of Class Night with Commence¬ ment, the class of 1972 received their diplomas Thursday, May 25, in the high school gym¬ nasium. After the traditional processional, “Pomp and Circumstance , the various awards and recognitions were announced followed by the speaker and presentation of diplomas. Sen¬ ior choir and band members participated in a final performance with the groups on dif¬ ferent nights. Blue and white were chosen as the class colors with the class motto We hold hope tor tomorrow to help live through today . 20 ABOVE: “Bring Us Together titled the Commencement address presented by Dr. Lycurgus M. Two seasonal sports banquets honored deser¬ ving athletes throughout the year. In combina¬ tion with the game efforts of the athletes, cheerleaders also helped strengthen Panther loy¬ alty and school spirit. The Panthers also won their own Holiday Tournament. It could be described as an up and down season. Vic¬ tories over Plymouth, Rochester, and Wawasee highlighted the campaign. NorthWood was led in scoring by Steve Reed. Rex Holmes grabbed the most rebounds and was co-leader of assists with Phil Lechlitner. Losing 4 of 5 starters, NorthWood will be greatly helped by the Junior Varsity who also had a good season. NorthWood also participated in the Concord Sectional. Barry Geyer and Jim Charles won the first two varsity letters. The gymnastics team graduates Geyer only. The team is com¬ posed mostly of underclassmen, promising a very competitive team in the near future. Gym¬ nastics is an interesting and entertaining sport and should not be passed by as a spectator sport. CLOCKWISE: S. Schroeder, S. Ehret, B. Geyer, Mgr. K. Hall, D. Metzger, Coach j. Andrews, J. Credit should be given to Don Mar¬ shall, Rick Hollar, and Dave Mattern who came out for the first time and still wrestled var¬ sity. Jim Huff, Rex Forrest, and John Hoch- stetler completed 4 years of rough competition. Russ Shaw turned in an excellent 11-0-1 regular season record. He also placed first in the con¬ ference meet. Much credit should be given to all wrestlers being in such a rugged sport. SITTING: K. Stutzman, D. Hirsh, M. Brown, B. Etsinger, R. Schroeder, M. Miller. KNEELING: L. Loucks, D. Mish- ler, G. National Honor Society inducts members in Spring Membership into National Honor Society is limited to a certain percentage of juniors and seniors meeting set requirements each year. New members were inducted into the society this year at an evening program in April. Four previously elected seniors pre¬ sented speeches prior to the presentation of certificates and pins to the new members. The club promoted the future purchasing of a school sign as well as ushering at the spring and fall Civic Theater productions. This year's National Honor Society officers include: Pre¬ sident Russ Shaw, Vice-president John Maust, Secretary- treasurer Ranita Hopewell. 43 ABOVE: Chess Club Recorder Dave Rohrer, President Steve Phillips, Vice-President Naomi Schrock, Secretary- Treasurer Randy Culp. Student Council fights for students' rights This year the student council worked for more student's rights. The apple machine and juke¬ box are two examples of their good work. A big issue this year, juniors and seniors did not have to be at school during first and last hour study halls. Again this year the student coun¬ cil supervised homecoming activities and the election of class officers. Speech and Drama organizes new productions The Drama Club is open to anyone interested in dramatic productions. Members have an opportunity to act, build sets, put on make¬ up, sew wardrobe, sell tickets, direct and pro¬ duce. Two productions are presented each year, one in the fall and one in the spring. This year the club presented Woody Allen's Don't Drink The Water and Charles Schultz's Your're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. Campus Lifemeets Monday nights Homes of Campus Life members proved to be the scene of activity when the group held its weekly meetings. Subjects of the gatherings varied from impact to insight meetings and a number of area activities were also held. The year began with a Burger Bash followed by Scream in the Dark during Halloween and a youth convention at Christmas time. Campus Life has no definite membership because the meetings are always opened to any interested student. 59 hours of growing knowledge English and ABOVE: Gary and his “pet”. The ability to read, write, and respond is one of the many aims in these courses. English students remember their research papers, vo¬ cabulary words and book reports. Speech classes practice the art of effective public speaking and various topics were assigned for speech subjects. All of the activities of English and Speech help the students to prepare for the future and relate better with the present. ABOVE LEFT: Is it John or the local mailman? With subject choices ranging from history to sociology, students can participate in any area of their choice. mm Math and Science — the key to a new world The expansion of math and science facilities at NorthWood has brought many students into the departments. With two algebras and general math to choose from, freshmen can get the math education they want. Geometry, algebra II, trig., and introductory analysis enable the math major to prepare for any college. The science department also offers four years for the college bound student as well as others. Although biology is required of sophomores, it can be taken by freshmen, so they can take chemistry I, biology II, chemistry II, and physics. With physical science, they make a science department to match any. BOTTOM LEFT: Now John watch the teacher not the birdie. TOP RIGHT: Mr. Weaver's hand I anguage livens up math. First and second year art students study a variety of art areas in attempt to learn the basics of the sub¬ ject. The advanced courses in art are Ceramics Crafts and Paints Prints. Many of this year's art students experimented with macreme or tried acrylic paints for the first time. Block prints, pencil dra wings and clay mugs also appeared throughout the year. From time to time the work of various art classes was dis¬ played in the halls giving other students a 5 chance to see the art work. Clicking typewriters, busy adding machines and balance sheets are only a few of the every day happenings in many business class¬ es. A student may choose to take business I courses, either in preparation for a future job or for practical business knowledge. This year's classes experienced the usual assignments, such as filing and timed writings, but con¬ cluded the year with a better understanding of the modern business world. m MIDDLE LEFT: General Business students discuss prac¬ tice problems. Much time and hard work also went into the preparation of groups parti¬ cipating in music contest. Bachelor's home ec. students managed to turn out some tasty dishes while enrolled in this class. Skills such as nutrition, sewing and child care were also taught in the basic home economics courses. j 76 Agriculture students learn modern methods NorthWood offers four years of educational agriculture. The program is based on study of advanced methods ot develop better farming techniques. Although much time is spent in the classroom learning basic facts, there are several field trips during the year for stu¬ dents to add to their knowledge. Subjects studied include: seeds, livestock, machinery, crops, weather, and methods. They learn the ways that are practiced locally as well as new innovations being tested elsewhere. The pro¬ gram adds to basic knowledge and practical experience, up to date methods which will enable students to produce larger and better crops each year. Offerings have spread out to cover about all basic fields in industrial arts as well as to many advanced courses. With ex¬ pansion has also come increased interest, especially from the girls, whose number grows each year. Three woodworking courses and building trades provide background in creating in the shop and in following blue¬ prints. Mechanical and architectural drawing combine to prepare the student for making blueprints. Besides the traditional shop cour¬ ses, Northwood has graphic arts and basic metal, electric, and auto for students. Stu¬ dents wishing to advance themselves in the latter three can take electronics, machine shop, or auto mechanics. ABOVE LEFT: How did the engine come out? When I came to the states in July, I did not know what to expect in school because I only saw a picture of it and I think that the students and teachers make up the school and the building is just a shell around it. By the time a couple school weeks went by I really felt that I was a student and no longer a guest. At this point I would like to thank all of you students for the way you treated me as just another student and I want to thank all of the faculty members, especially those who had so much patience with me while trying to teach me history, math or whatever it was, for accepting me as a student. You have really been great! I hope I'll be hearing from you sometime, from those who are in college now or from those who are still in school. My address is Heiko Jansen, 221 Jtzehoe, Gartensh 18, West-Germany. I hope I could see all of you sometime in the future. Thanks, Heiko. Hello, NorthWood! Remember me? I'm Angie, your ex¬ change student from Bremen, Germany. I had a nice time here at NorthWood. This year was one of my greatest experiences I ever had. I clearly remember the very first week in school, everything was so exciting, so different from what I was used to in Germany. I hardly knew any of the students, and I had difficulty with the language. All this made the beginning kind of hard. But ever since I had got the hang of it, school became pretty much routine. I met many nice kids, and I enjoyed talking with them. I want to thank everybody, students and those who keep the school going, for all their help and cooperation. But most of all I want to express thanks to my host family Mr. Mrs. Harold L. Berkey who shared their home with me, and made my stay enjoyable. Now, coming to an end, I want to say that NorthWood is a pretty nice school, even though there are short¬ comings. Listen Kids! School in America is so much easier than in Germany!
