Representing roughly 10% of the senior class, these “Outstanding Seniors” are to be congratulated for wrapping up their days at NHS with such success. Outstanding Seniors 11 Wrapped Up, “If only for one night” An evening adorned in silk ribbons and bow ties ... Nikki Jones and date dancing the night away. Proms are a tradition that continue to bring excitement to North wood each year. A prom date is not just an ordinary date; it is one of the most important events of the school year. The girls make their appearances wrapped in taffeta and silk, and the guys can be seen decked out in their black tie best. Plans for the evening also frequently include a dinner before and a party or breakfast afterwards. “If Only For One Night was truly a night from which dreams are made. As the couples passed over an arched bridge, they found themselves facing the beautiful New York City skyline and city atmosphere. As the 1986 Prom ended, the couples left with fond memories. They were first students for 30 hours of instruction in ETT (otherwise known as Effective Teacher Training) under the expert leadership of “Role-play Lee, Overhead Ray, and Video Johnson.” Then the reams of paper work required for re-accreditation under the Southern Assoc, of Acer, hit them full in the face. Under Mr. Kitzmiller’s guidance the many forms were completed, but only after hours of research, composition, review, and revision. There were days when we just didn’t want to come to class and study that dreaded subject of “English.” Even though English is a subject that we will use in the future, some of us find it hard to get wrapped up in it. Though some of the classes were very interesting, we could have skipped others without any major threat to our future. Special thanks goes to all of the teachers who tried to make our classes at least mildly interesting! Gina Freeman with her Julius Caesar project. 62 English Mrs Gray explains to her students exactly how it’s done. Cassandra Minor shows us some of the projects from The Sciarlet Letter. Mr. Roper delightedly records a good response. We now have proof that these three aren’t camera shy! Some of Mrs. Adams’ students perfect their communication skills. English 63 Envelleto En Espanol “jBuenos nochas! You are now in sunny Spain; just across the border from France. While in Spain you will have the opportunity to get wrapped up in the Spanish culture.” This year Spanish III classes focused on Spanish literature, Spanish II worked to improve their conversational skills, and Spanish I acquired a basic knowledge of their chosen language. A special boost for Spanish III students this year was their appearance on WTVD’s “Young Universe” show. jAdios! 64 Foreign language Enveloppe Du Francais Bonjour! Welcome to France! Students in Mrs. Hull’s French classes have been wrapped up in verb tenses, conjugations, and basic principles of French grammer. While students in French I are busy constructing a base on which to build their knowledge of the French language, students in French II, III, and IV are working to strengthen the skills they have already acquired. Mrs. Hull’s creative teaching style has made class interesting for all four levels of French. Au voir! Foreign Language 66 Media The group that was trying its best to spread the word of North wood was the 1986-87 “Hoofbeats” staff. The newspaper is produced and put out by students who enjoy writing. The “Hoofbeats” staff also did the “Juke Box” with dedications to those special people in our lives. The “Hoofbeats” paper as usual has added that special touch to North wood to make this a memorable year. It’s not easy to be creative! 66 Media Almee Thomas hard at work. What does this lever do? Media 67 Social Studies History courses teach students about both old and current events. The teachers try to give students a basic knowledge of events that have helped our country grow. An understanding of history enables us to meet the challenges of our world today. This year students took part in a Medieval Fair. This project gave the students an opportunity to play roles of people of that time such as kings, noble women and men, and peasants. It was fun and educational, too. Students in all history classes made it through the year with the usual headaches and ended the year with more awareness of the world around them. Mr. Shaner starts the day off right. History students enjoy the Medieval Fair. 68 Social Studies The king and queen of the Medieval Fair. Are you willing to share? Social Studies 69 Science Most of North wood’s students are wrapped up in science everyday. All students are required to take Physical Science and Biology; however, Physics and Chemistry are offered to those students who are planning to attend college and thus need the additional, more advance science course. Even if you don’t like dissecting animals, writing chemical equations, or studying the physical aspects of matter, science is a fundamental subject that we all must encounter at some point during our high school years. Science can be interesting: speaks to Mr. Davidson’s Above: Two chemical wizards are hard at work. 70 Science I '. Above: A group of army engineers Chemistry and Biology classes. Above: A dedicated Physical Science student puts his paper tower to the test. Science 71 Math Figuring out tedious math problems is an everyday event for students in the math curriculum at NHS. Math classes include business math for those who plan to achieve goals in a business world through a short scholastic program. The more advanced courses such as Algebra II and advanced math are for students who plan to attend a four year college or university and provides them with numerous career choices. Let me see ... if 9(a+b) = 45, then a = ... Mr. Cwlrko seems pleased with The fun side of math, this assignment. If gold is selling for $402. an ounce, then all this Jewelry must be worth-------? Now, one more time ... 72 Math From Christmas greetings to special Spirit Week messages, NHS math students use their computer skills to spread the word. These advanced math students are finding out just how complicated math can he. Math 73 Business (PEL «WQMWpe ' -1 Mrs. Mercer explains the meaning of the basics of a contract. The Northwood business department is definitely taking care of business this year. The variety of skills learned in the business classes will greatly benefit those who are involved in these classes. Our business department is capable of preparing students with the basic skills needed to obtain jobs as secretaries, office clerks, bookkeepers, and computer operators. The business world is one of great opportunity and the Northwood business department does a great job of showing students how to achieve their goals. In Mrs Dark’s Recordkeeping Class, students learn how to keep the books for a business. Does Debra White work with a good attitude as the board says?? Home Economics Our home economics students have been busy all year learning to cook and sew and then putting their talents to work. The faculty especially enjoys the lunches served by the food service students; and the delicious pies they made at Christmas made the holidays easier for our teachers — except for Mrs. Evans! NHS sewing students were busy at Christmas filling orders for their special stockings. This group also provided alteration services or would sew an outfit upon request. No room for mistakes with scissors! 76 Home Economics The best part of cooking is eating! Mr. Pendergrast makes a few pointers. These students seem to enjoy their classwork Vocational With knowledgeable teachers and willing students our vocational department provides training that gives immediate results. NHS vocational students provide many services for our school and community. It takes a group effort to get the job done right. Huffing and puffing won’t blow our house down! Vocational 77 Vocational The vocational classes at Northwood are filled with students who want a jump on life. They are learning skills that will enable them to go directly into a job in the fields of masonry, carpentry, or agriculture. The second and third year masonry and carpentry classes put their skills to work each year as they undertake projects in the community. This year's class has put an addition on a cinder block shop that was built by last year's classes. They are also doing the majority or the work on a new house for a former teacher This is not a simple structure they are building, but rather a brick and siding house with bay windows, porches, a fireplace and chimney, brick flooring in some areas, and totaling approximately 2000 sq. ft. of living space. With experience such as this, these students are preparing for future careers or will, at least, make good, “handy” men during their adult lives. The agriculture students started the year with two successful money raising projects. The sale of fruit for the holiday season may have depended more on the sales techniques and handling, packaging, and delivering know-how; but their second project required more plant knowledge. They raised poinsettia plants (red, white, and pink), wrapped them in foil, and trimmed them with ribbons and bows, and delivered them to their customers. Their work in the greenhouse over the winter months produced bedding plants for spring planting. Another project provided learning experience in many areas as these students constructed chicken coops, and raised chickens to study. Learning to evaluate egg laying ability and suitability of the carcass prepares these students for team competition in poultry judging contests. The work done by these students is sometimes over-looked, but they certainly deserve recognition for their fine work and developing skills 78 Vocational Vocational 79 Health fi? P.E. NORTHHOOD CTT.' Odd Ends 81 Band This year North wood Marching Chargers had another outstanding year under the direction of Mr. Jeff Pusser. Despite the fact that their uniforms had to be replaced because of a fault in cleaning, they still showed their excellence wrapped up in their tuxedo-like uniforms. Mr. Pusser was very pleased with their performances in competitions, parades, and at football games. We all support the band and look forward to the introduction of their new uniforms again. Ed Garcia was selected to be a member of the All-State Band. An NHS first — congratulations, Ed! 82 Band It takes hours of practice to perform. “All together now — 1,2, 3!” Band 83 Chorus Northwood singers are divided into three groups: Green 6? Gold, Concert Choir, and Pony Express. These groups provide many hours of enjoyment for themselves and their audiences. They participated in the Christmas Arts Extravaganza and also at “Christmas at the Capital” in Raleigh. Community meetings and our NHS Baccalaureate service also benefit from the talents of these students. NHS has reason to be especially proud of the Choral Department and one of its members In particular, Kent Burnette. For the first time a NHS student has been selected as a member of the N.C. All-State Chorus, the criterion for All-State participation Is a recommendation by the choral teacher; past performances at solo competitions; and, if needed, individual try-outs for All-State Judges. Due to his previous experiences, Kent had to do only the first two. After selection, he was given music to practice with his teacher, Mrs. Pat Harris, prior to the performance time. In February the All-State Chorus presented a concert for the public In Hill Hall at UNC-CH. Congratulations, Kent! Chorus 85 Dance The Dance company has enjoyed performing for North wood as well as other schools and groups in the community. Dance company is the highest level in dance and the members have enjoyed many “moving” experiences. Members of the Dance Ensemble: Tonya Carpenter, Denise Bampton, Janie Nowood, Jenette Johnson, Wanda Rone, Marcus Winston, Sholanda Dark, Torry Epps, Pete Page, Missy Forrester, Gina Freeman, Tracey Hackney and Julie Clark. 86 Dance Drama The fall production of Our Town by the Drama Department might have created backstage jitters, but the audience found the cast to be accomplished performers. Under the direction of coaches Green and Bradley, the Chargers played schools such as N.C. School of Science and Math, Wake Forest, and Apex High. The Chargers felt a surge of support when loyal fans attended games both at home and away. The fact that Thursday’s soccer game was included in the homecoming activities this year gave a big boost of morale to the team members. Though the experience of this year’s senior players will be missed, next year’s team will benefit from the increased interest of players and fans. The soccer team enjoyed homecoming fe8tlvlUe8. Cheerleaders Our cheerleaders spend many long hours perfecting the routines that will involve spectators and encourage athletes. Last summer our squad went to an ICF cheerleading camp at Davidson College. Entered in the division for large schools, they won an Award of Excellence and several blue ribbons and super-spirit- sticks for their enthusiasm and ability. It takes more than a “big mouth” to be a cheerleader; physical strength and agility are also necessary. Let’s hear a cheer for our NHS cheerleaders! H Let’s Hear It! Go Chargers! Not only did the squad receive recognition for a super performance, but Mary Strowd was chosen for the All-American Team. This entitled her to attend IOCC in Nashville, Tennessee. Here she competed with 3000 other cheerleaders for the Reebok All-American Team. Mary was one of the 50 chosen for this team. We are very proud of Mary and her accomplishments. V. Coach Errol Roper filled the five member team with pride and determination as well as the skill to take two runners: Earl Stroud and Robert Long, to all-conference recognition. Each member worked very hard, but these two were exceptional. The team was a young one full of potential, but lacking only experience. Robert Long state “We had a fresh team this year, but we had a great time!” • lliWlW 118 Crosscountry Girls Tennis The ’86-87 girls tennis team had a reasonably successful season under the guidance of Kay Judge. Each year our team improves and grows stronger. The players have learned a lot about the game as well as themselves. Even though they didn’t win every match, they had enough pride and spirit to hold their heads up high and to keep fighting. Shebria Covington and Kady Judge received all-conference honorable mention recognition. Disappointment, frustration and at times excitement were just some of the sentiments that the ’86-87 girls basketball team felt: The win-loss record wasn’t that impressive, but the attitude of our team members was. They never gave up; they kept trying; and as our photos show, the excitement of a victory was just that much greater because of all that our team had gone through. They just kept getting better and better. Special recognition goes to our senior players: Verika Bynum, Pauline Carter, and Connie Marks. Their experience and ability will be missed next year, but their attitude and spirit will be remembered and followed. 122 Basketball V Basketball 123 JV Cheerleaders With enthusiasm and talent, out North wood JV Cheerleaders add their special energy to the junior varsity athletic programs. High hopes of success turned to sad memories as they ended the season winless. Nevertheless, there were some bright spots in this sea of despair. John Minnich made the All-Tournament team. Together, Noel Parker and Jeff Lewis posed a threat as a great doubles team. After the conference tournament, the process of planning a more solid foundation for a better season began! Noel Parker receives the serve. 126 Tennis T r a c k The 1986 track team hah a few long awaited changes. For the first time, girls joined the team, thus adding a new dimen- sion and a sense of encourage- ment to their teammates. A new track was built with funds pro- vided through an athletic grant and fund raising projects. Though the team had a mediocre season, they practiced for many hours for their competitions. Although it did not always pay off, the time was well spent sweating and aching in order to come closer to their goals. Their hard work and great coaching by Mr. Roper will surely pay off in the future. NHS hopes to field a girls team as well as a boys team in the near future. The team finished the regular season with a record of 11 wins and 11 losses. However, the up and down season was soon forgotten as the Chargers headed to the state playoffs with new hopes. The team suffered their final loss of the season to South Johnston. The ’86 Chargers gained much experience for the ’87 year, and players and fans look forward to a better season. J.V. You have given so much of your time and effort to make each day pleasurable. You were truly missed when you were selected to represent our region for the North Carolina Teachers Program. Though this was an honor for you, NHS, and Chatham County, we were sorry you weren’t with us as we closed out this school year. We know, however, that you still have “Charger Pride” and will return next year. Students relate to you because you are so willing to listen to their concerns and to offer your support.
