Summer 24 Winter 130 Imprints '85 Northwood High School Pittsboro, North Carolina Volume XII Spring Seasons will change just as times will change. Like the turning wheel of life they repeat themselves year after year only to bring something new and exciting into our lives, something to remember and cher- ish forever. Spring enters the world with beauty and excitement. It's time for the Junior-Senior Prom, softball, baseball, golf and track. We watch the year fall away and take its perspective behind us. All the events converge so furiously into the final frantic days of gradua- tion and good-byes. Memories lin- ger, too immediate to be forgotten, but somehow, strangely distant ... Autumn ... A hot, restless summer even- tually changes into a cool, beautiful fall. The leaves slowly turn into col- orful reds, yellows, and browns. Then silently, they fall from the trees. The air is cool and crisp, nip- ping the skin with each step as the dim, lonely sun hangs heavily in the sky. By this time, school is well underway. Classwork and home- work are once again a part of every- day life. Football games highlight the season with excitement. A holi- day season approaches while teachers and students look forward to a vacation from each other. Seniors begin the last countdown of their high school days and real- ize how rapidly they're passing. Summer But things begin to clear. Seniors head for the beaches, mountains or lakes, and everyone is ready for summer. Days pass, hot and then hotter, burning away the past year. For some, it seems interminable, one long sticky day after another. But for others, school and it's activ- ities don't stop — it's summer school, workshops, camps and practices. All these give wings and hasten the action of time. Cooling off at the lake, parties, and summer jobs come to an end all too soon. One by one the breaths of summer are breathed, and with the final exhalations, it's back to school ... Winter ... As the wheel of life rotates, winter comes. The winds claim all but the best of autumn's memories. Favorite sports move inside. Foot- balls are traded for basketballs. We suffer the cold and the damp for a fleeting promise of snow; then Christmas, with its reds and greens, takes us through one dying year and into a new one, full of resolutions and promises. This new year greets us with enthu- siasm and challenge. For all seniors, '85 is not just another year. But to them, there is a special magic in the numbers. And though many years will pass and dull the things that have gone before, '85 will keep its kinship to those who claim it as their year. 3 March 21 22 23 24 25 26 30 .i April 2 3 4 8 11 12 13 17 20 21 22 26 27 28 29 30 May 1 5 6 7 8 9 '7 14 15 16 17 18 «j 23 24 25 26 27 Spring Events March, April, and May were three months to re- member. They were the months of the Senior Prom, Mayfest and Graduation. Mayfest, held April 11, was a success in many ways. It gave the students a chance to unwind and to partici- pate in events with other students, not to mention the funds that were raised for the school. Then on May 5, the Junior-Senior Prom was held. The juniors worked long hours to give the seniors something to remember their last prom by. It really turned out to be A Night to Remember. Finally, it was time for graduation. On May 31 seniors received their diplomas, turned their tassels, tossed their caps into the air, and were officially de- clared alumni of North wood. r May 5, 1984, was truly a Night to Remember . The evening began at 8:00 with a formal greeting by faculty members. Students then passed under a flower-adorned archway and walked into a gigantic gazebo. After socializing, seeing who was with whom, examining dres- ses and tuxedos, and much danc- ing, students sampled the delicious finger foods and punch. Python, from 97 FM, provided the entertainment for the evening and proved to be a big success with the students. The prom officially ended at 12:00 a.m., but everyone knew the night was still young. '84 Prom 6 Prom Mayfest Mayfest 1984 turned out to be a super day despite the rumors that it would be a failure or would not take place at all. The day offered many activities for students. In the morning, bal- loon-a-grams were distributed by the Spanish Club. Later in the day, students could work out their frus- trations by participating in the car smash or writing on the graffiti board. Also during the day, many students and teachers found them- selves to be jailbirds in the stu- dent council jail. The highlight of Mayfest '84 was the second annual Mr. Northwood Contest in which Kenneth Blacknell was named the winner. Mayfest 7 The 1983-1984 varsity baseball team had a good year. Ronald Horton coached the team once again. With the loss of a few great players last year, the members this year were forced to work hard to fill the spots although the team members gained much experience and knowl- edge to help in future years. The team and coach are looking forward to the coming season. Varsity Baseball 9 My J. V. Baseball The 1983-84 junior varsity baseball team had a lot of skill and ability. Mark Clark, Harold Edwards, James Peace and Montrell Scurlock were the returning players. They provided leadership and sportsmanship for the team. The members of the team were (kneeling from left to right) Mark Clark, Kent Burnette, Harold Edwards, Montrell Scurlock, and James Peace. Standing — Jay Hilliard, John Shaner, Darrle Harris, Ronald Brooks (coach), and Tim Watts. 10 J.V. Baseball J.V. Baseball 11 Girls’ Varsity Softball The 1983-1984 varsity softball team had a fantastic year finishing the season as Conference Champions. They lost in the final of the confer- ence tournament 6-7 against Chatham Central. For the first time in the history of the school, the softball team played in the state play-offs. The team was well bal- anced and talented both offensive- ly and defensively. Their over-all record was 11-1. The team mem- bers are pictured on the opposite page: Seated are Amy Dupree, Lowan McGhee, Brenda Smith, Carla Farrell, Latanya Clemons and Kim McIntosh. Standing are Coach Loflin, Sharon Davis, Karen Davis, Cindy Brown, Beverly Barbee, Connie Marks, Marilyn French and Charlene Page. Pictured right, Cin- dy Brown keeps another point off the scoreboard. 12 13 J. V. Softball Considering the fact that this was the first J.V. softball team for Northwood, the J.V. girls did well. The season started off slow, but later it started picking up. The team is pictured below: Trina Robinson, Yvonne Sexton, Jennifer Beaver, Shebra Covington, Coach McPherson. Sitting are Sharon Edwards, Becky Sipes, Marchelle Smith, Amy Lankford and Manager Kim Williams. Standing are Tonya Hicks, Leslie Smith, Tonya Hackney, Annette French, Lisa Brooks, Sheri Sturdivant. 14 Cross Country The 1984-85 cross country team was once again coached by the knowledgeable Errol Roper. This year's team consisted of five female members. Coach Roper was surprised, yet pleased, at the girls' interest in running. He hopes that their inter- est will continue in future years. The entire team put forth great effort to make the season one of success. Members of this year's team were (front row) Abdul Ghaffar, Tiare Paxson (back row) Errol Roper (coach). Shannon Blackwood, Kelly Miller, Perry Bowden, Alicia Holder, Lynn Lutterloh, Heath Roper (manager) and Sandy Montoya (not pic- tured). Cross Country 15 T rack 'l The 1984 Chargers Track Team had their most successful season ever. Coach Errol Roper led the team to its first place finish in the conference, which is the only time this has ever happened! The team also set seven new school records. Finishing third in the Ledford relays in Thomasville was another accomplishment of this out- standing team. Special recognition should go to the following members who received All-Conference honors: Keith Alston, Reggie Baldwin, Thom- as Baldwin, Kenneth Blacknell, Har- vey Burnette, Tim Crabtree, Abdul Ghaffar, Eugene Smith, and Leander Strowd. 17 The 1984 season's record of 6-6 does not properly reflect the hard work of the tennis team. Coach Jim Hart worked with the team members, and tremendous improvement was shown as the season progressed, l.ars Stanley was recognized with All-Conference honors for his accomplish- ments during the season. Other members of the team were John Davis, Bret Grebe, Perry Harrison, Miles Helm, Jeff Lewis, John Marshall, Tern’ Oldham, Noel Parker, Chris Parker and Keith Screws. Summer Getaways Over the summer, Dar- ryl Brittain, Eugene Lyons, Nicky Holland, and Miles Helm attended Boys' State at Wake Forest University. They learned about the government at various levels, how it functioned, the political process, and how politicians present themselves to convince others. Also, they met in- teresting people and made many new friends. Boys’ Girls’ Jan Poindexter and Michelle Mills attended Girls' State at UNC-Greensboro June 10-16. They learned how to use parliamentary proce- dure, and they also learned how the inside of our government works. 20 Honors Governor’s Jan Poindexter also attended Governor's School East at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C. June 24- August 4. Her major area of study was math; she also took philosophy and psy- chology classes. Graduation 1 9B4 With final exams, much anticipation, and many days of practice behind them, it was time for graduation. On May 31, 1984, 138 seniors received their diplo- mas, turned their tassels, tossed their caps up into the air, and were officially declared alumni. Through all the trials, tribulations, and tears, they realized that at last they were out on their own. The Marshalls for 1984, from left to right, were John Davis, Michelle Mills, Cindy Brown, Frita Fairley, Jan Poindexter, Perry Harrison, Can Autry, Sharon Davis, Randy Bright, and Karen Davis. Not pic- tured are Juanda Crutchfield and Bland Danek. Graduation 21 Fore! ,k i I Hi I ir:f The 1984 golf team did not h«m a very successful season Thev came in fifth out of six teams in the confer ence Team member Ricky Campbell attributed the poor season to lack of practice sessions because ot bad weather Coach Ray expects to have a better season in '85 if all the team members return However, despite the low conference rank of the team last year, one ot Northwood's team members, C leat I indsey, was named Conference Player of I he Year Pictured above from left to right and top to bottom are Coach Tom Ray. Ricky Campbell, Cleat I indsey, Chns Sykes, Shane Burns and David Calleo Summer Summertime and the living is easy. Some North- wood students might disagree with that statement. Their summer time was spent in various activities which were not necessarily easy. Of course, they man- aged to leave some fun in their undertakings! Cheer- leading camp was strenuous, but new friends were made, and new movements were learned. Other stu- dents represented Northwood admirably at Girls' State, Boys' State and at the Governor's School this summer. Spanish students had an educational experi- ence as well as a grand time on the trip to Spain. Mrs. Lee was tour guide, counselor, organizer and interpret- er for this group of misplaced Chargers. What a way to spend the summer! Needless to say, vacation trips with family and friends were enjoyed by most stu- dents. And then the summer ended ... 20 21 22 29 30 31 25 26 S.U.M.M.E.R H Homecoming- Kim Cross (Right) was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1984. The week's festivi- ties began with the dress up days. Each day had its own theme. On Monday teachers were shocked as purple and green-haired students walked into class dressed for Punk Rock Dav. Tuesday was Bummy Day. On Wednesday students sported poodle skirts, pony tails, bobbie socks, red lipstick, leather jackets, and slicked back hair as they celebrated 50's Day. On Thursday, Northwood was invaded by Twins as students dressed alike for Twin Day. And many students were decked out in green and gold on Friday. mmg Parade I m Ajorthwood l£Uj. ft? 4 fojJH • On Thursday, the streets of Pitts- boro were tilled with Northwood fans celebrating with their annual homecoming parade. The juniors' float received first honors. The FCA float came in second place, and the sophomores' float placed third. Fol- lowing the parade on Thursday, many students went to the bonfire to build school spirit and morale. The pep rally was held on Friday; this added the final touch in prepara- tion for the game. Unfortunately, the chargers lost the game to West Montgomery. But still this did not dampen the half-time fes- tivities. During half-time, Kim Cross was crowned Northwood's Home- coming Queen. After the game, the Homecoming dance was held in the gym. The unusually hot weather caused school to be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. for the first week. Then as the weather gradually got cooler, school got into its regu- lar routine with school letting out at 2:30. With the passing days and weeks, football, girls' tennis, and cross country proceded with victories over opposing teams. The long awaited cross country team was formed due to popular demand. The month of October brought us our Homecoming and our annual parade as Northwood Crowned its new Homecoming Queen Kim Cross. We also had Halloween with some of our best students dressed up in their worst costumes to see who could win first prize. October's Bus Drivers of the month were chosen. The Northwood district driver was Kim Cross; the Pitts- boro Primary driver was Karen Davis, and the Horton driver was Robin Tyree. As November approached, students looked for- ward to the Thanksgiving holidays, and a short break from school. H.A.P.P.E .N.I.N.G.S As autumn slowly added color to the trees, it quickly added excitement to the lives of Northwood students. Many students celebrated Homecoming. The students above enjoyed riding in the parade like several other students. Also, many students dressed up for Hallo- ween and tricked friends and neighbors that did not provide them with treats. Much practice and dedication helped this year's team achieve its many victories. All of the members of the team contributed to make this a memorable year. Two of the players were named All-Conference: Kim McIn- tosh and Cari Autri were awarded for their accom- plishments. The team looks forward to next year with more high hopes for what it might bring. But we could say the team had a winning season based upon their hard work and prepara- tion. And we could say they had a losing season caused by the graduation of most of our key players from last year. The team did not win any of their key games. The season overall was just alright. The coaches for the year were R. Brooks, R. Horton, T. David- son, S. Elliott, H. Elliott. North wood I 120 Varsity Football CHARGERS Varsity Football 121 J.V. With the holidays, we all dreamed of a white Christmas; but with the temperatures soaring into the seventies, this dream was far from a reality. Although most of us stayed home for Christmas, many students did travel to other states to visit rela- tives and friends. Northwood's basketball teams played in the Wie- land Holiday Classic during our break from school and our varsity lady chargers placed second in the tourna- ment. Congratulations to them. When we returned to school on that dreaded Janu- ary 2, most of us began counting the days. However, we did not spend that many days during the month of January in school. Because of the holidays, teacher's workdays, and snow days, we did not go to school a full week during the entire month of January'. 6 27 28 132 H.A.P.P.E.N.I.N.G.S Winter descended upon us once again and brought with it midterm exams, Christmas, New Year s Day, and varying weather. The season began with extreme- ly mild temperatures. The temperature even hit the mid seventies during early winter. In contrast, during mid-January our temperature dropped to a fngid-9 degrees as the Alberta Clipper swept down with its blast of Canadian cold air. Varsity Basketball The Northwood Charger's Varsi- ty Basketball Team had a slow start during the 1984-85 season. While they needed some improvement, they showed much potential. The members of the team were Ernest Nickerson, Todd Sanders, Abdul Ghaffar, Leander Strowd, James McKissick, Tim Watts, David Bar- bee, Darrell Burnette, Chris Eaves, Harold Edwards, Derrick Strick- land, Willie Monroe, and Montrell Scurlock. Jim Hart was coach; Allen Burge was the assistant coach, and Mike Wheeler was the manager. 134 Varsity Basketball Varsity Basketball 135 Girls’ Varsity Basketball The 1984-1985 Girls' Varsity Basketball Team got off to another great season. Despite the adjustment of a new coach, this years' team had a very impres- sive season. One of their losses was in the champion- ship game of the Wieland Classic during the Christ- mas holidays, but The Lady Chargers still placed second in this tournament. This was the best they had ever done in this particular tournament. The Lady Chargers played well in the conference. And the team had confidence and high hopes that they would go all the way. 136 Girls' Basketball Girls' Basketball 137 J.Y. Girls’ Basketball It has been an exciting year for the junior varsity participants. The school is proud to have a girls' junior varsity team representing it. Although the team got off to a slow start, its members showed much improvement with the help of Coach Hal Elliott. These hard-working girls showed no signs of giving up. They realized that winning isn't every- thing. The junior varsity team will hopefully create more experienced players on the varsity team. 138 J.V. Girls' Basketball J.V. Boys’ Basketball The junior varsity boys' basketball team was coached by Mr. Val Chadwick. The team showed much improvement this year, and they had lots of talent on all parts of the team. Mr. Chadwick showed wise judgement in the management of the team. The Junior Varsity Boys showed they were not a team to be messed with this year. J.V.
