Groups Encourage Student Participation Based upon students' outstanding ability in the dramatic field, the National Thespian Society inducted members early in the school year. Pupils participating in all phases of drama were chosen on a basis of points acquired for work in school productions. Members were active after school as well as in school. Weekly meetings allowed time for members to demonstrate their acting abilities in short skits and improvisations. Adding a new dimension to Northwood's extra-curricular activities, the Student Forum discussion group was formed this year. Sponsored by lVlr. lVlendelson, the group allowed for student deliberation on topics ranging from the county educational system to the rise of black power in our country. Highlighting the discussions with occasional guest speakers, the Student Forum allowed for a greater participation of the student body in today's controversial issues and topics. Joanne Schnitzer explains a series of skits and irnprovisations to be executed by Thespian members during a March meeting of the group. ,, Ee.. L Thespians Elaine Graff, Ellen Gaffney, and Senellie Phillips act out their parts as Gerry Royston portrays the main character in a short skit. l Organizations 83

De- Band Strives For Musical Excellence Under the direction of the school's new conductor, Mr. Harry Putt, the Northwood High School Band entertained the student body at various concerts and halftime shows during the year. The band rehearsed daily, meeting first period to practice the arrangements for the upcoming concerts and improve the playing ability of the band members. Staging colorful half-time shows during football games, the Marching Band and Majorettes furnished entertainment for the spectators. The Maiorettes, led by Drum Major David Schreiber, highlighted halftime with their graphic formations and marches, as the Band provided the marching music for the occasion. Marching in various parades in the area, the Band earned a first place award in the Veterans Day Parade in Wheaton. Among other activities was a spring march at the Winchester Apple Blossom Festival in West Virginia, a Thanksgiving Day parade in November, and the annual Spring Concert. During a first period session of Band practice, junior saxophonist Bob Hild experiments with a few bars of marching music on his instrument.
