Terry Bryner ponders a hypothetical chess situation demonstrated on the blackboard by fellow Chess Club member Pete Olver during a club meeting. Strategy Important In Club Competition Practicing frequently during the week, the Bridge Club met after school to improve their playing abilities in the game of bridge. Members played each other in groups of fours, instructing one another to improve playing style and games- manship. A major part of the Bridge Club schedule included competition with numerous other schools. The club played area high schools, such as Springbrook, B.C.C., and Churchill, usually keeping the same partnerships to improve play. Also meeting at frequent intervals throughout the week, the Chess Club members played each other for both enjoyment and for practice. Members discussed and demonstrated playing strategy at the meetings. The occasional use of instructional materials such as books and magazines improved the playing skill of the individuals. Showing their enjoyment of chess, members chose to continue play outside of school at each other's homes. ln addition to playing one another, tourna- ments with other area schools were held at home and away. Bridge Club president Jerry Rottenberg carefully tallies up the point scores during a home match with Bethesda Chevy Chase High School. Organizations 75 X s

fmww Alan Nlanford looks over the merchandise as he prepares to buy a T-shirt from Girls Sports Association Group Participates In Athletic Events Members of the Girls Sports Association encouraged participation in extra-curricular sports events and promoted an interest in athletics and physical fitness among Northwood girls. Senzing the school through numerous projects and activities, the girls conducted a bake sale enabling them to raise sufficient funds to support their organization. Among other projects was the sale of various refreshments at school athletic events, Sponsored by Miss Fran Edlovitch, the Girls' Sports group organized various honor teams and intramural events. Softball, basketball, and field hockey were among the sports in which the girls took part. The group participated in the IVICGSA Play Day in which area schools traveled to Northwood to compete in various field sports. A basketball tournament included girls from Northwood, Springbrook, Peary, and Wheaton. Dribbling downcourt Nlanette Van Deventer manages to elude an opposing player at a Girls' Sports Association Honor basketball game.
