Exchange Student Attends Northwood During the past year the AFS program has greatly en- riched our understanding of foreign countries-especially our understanding of Greece. Northwood's AFS student, Roula Asonitou, who comes from the small island of Corfu off the Grecian mainland, spent a year at the home of hostess Connie Goldstein and her family. Here Roula put to use her favorite hobby, cooking, by preparing many Grecian dishes for her American family. To start off the year, the AFS club sponsored a bake sale with food from different countries, and then planned a Halloween party to introduce Roula to this American custom. Speakers from the Peace Corps visited to tell of their various experiences, and club members enjoyed a field trip with the Spanish Club to a restaurant to sample the Spanish cuisine. Later in the year, Roula spoke about her native country, and displayed many pictures of well-known tourist attractions in Greece. Countries represented this year by members of the American Fields Senfice Club include the Virgin Islands, Nonlvay, Costa Rica, Thailand, Israel, Ecuador, and Greece. Before her seventh period class, Roula Asonitou asks her classmate, Marsha Coates, some questions about previous homework. 'WSE wg X. l t ,S 53 . K . x C S Xi fists? as me W S ass XRS Q st f r y SN? Hmm 5 Northwood Band members Kevin Putt, Clark Forsey, and Bill Yeckley play their instruments in the courtyard during a seventh period pep assembly. Students Delight In Assorted Activities E Northwood students were kept busy with various activities from the beginning of school on September 3 until the last day on June 19. To start off the year, students danced to the music of The Atlantics at the SGA-sponsored Welcome Dance. Later in the year, the SGA also sponsored the Vice-Versa dance on Valentine's Day, featuring The New Breed. The attendance at these dances was very good, and students had enjoyable times. From the start of the year, pep assemblies were held both inside the gym and outside in the courtyard for the various athletic teams. Films concerning driving safety were shown by the administration, and speakers came to talk with the student body. The music department presented several band, orches- tra, choir, and lVladrigal concerts to entertain the students. Plans were made for the production of a talent show, and a few students had acts planned, but it was cancelled due to a lack of response for the auditions. Northwood held its first annual photography contest in April, and a paper airplane flying contest also took place earlier in the year. lVlarty Rosenthal diligently practices with a yo-yo by his locker after ' school for an act to be included in the senior-sponsored talent show. r ' ll
