Faculty Emphasizes Group Participation Under the guidance of department teachers, English stu- dents sampled a various selection of literature. The sophomore English classes studied World Literature and covered in depth such pieces as Silas lVlarner and Julius Caesar. Classroom work included a broad poetry unit and emphasis on public speaking. ln addition to their assigned American Literature readings, several junior classes have extended their studies to modern books and plays. lVlrs. lVlartin's English lll class covered Death of a Salesman and Cry, the Beloved Country, a novel con- cerning life in South Africa. To vary classroom studies, lVlr. Holland devoted a unit to Logic which was followed by a week-long English seminar. This seminar gave students an excellent opportunity to express their views on organized religion, the present school system, and other topics of interest. Senior literature courses emphasized British authors. Class readings included Shakespeare, Chaucer, Conrad, and Hardy. Miss Ruddle examines an issue of the Red and Black with sports editor Joel Friedman and co-editor Roger Gordon before it is circulated. During her work planning period, Mrs. Evelyn Bond glances through one of the many books available in the literature section of the library. Academics 23
