Intramurals Inspire Girls' Participation Having the opportunity to participate in field hockey, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and softball, the Northwood girls displayed much spirit and coordination in the sports. During tryouts for each particular sport, the coach selects the most qualified girls and places them on an honor team. The remaining girls are placed on intramural teams. All of the girls' honor teams compete against other schools in a girls' league. After a poor field hockey season, the girls sped on to a victorious basketball season led by seniors Joanne Holford, Gayle Carter, lVlanette Van Devanter, Judy Harrell, junior Judy Sachs, and sophomore lVlarlou Van Devanter, Highlighting the season was the demolishing of Einstein 66-20 and the suc- cessful outcome of the county tournament where the girls recorded a 2-1 record. Volleyball, the last major girls' sport of the season, started slowly as they lost two of their first three games but concluded the season on a winning note. Nlanette Van Devanter grabs another rebound during competition.

,ff 'laguna Seniors Ellen Heller, Terry Wright, Carla Flatequal, and Jill McCarren lead the cheers during Northwood's first football game of the season. Cheerleaders lncite New School Spirit School spirit was reborn this year at Northwood High School. The cheerleaders were highly responsible for this revival. By working very hard all year long the cheerleaders achieved peak response from the student body at key athletic events. Coordinating their efforts every day during seventh period, the cheerleaders increased school spirit by other ways than by just leading cheers. Senior captain Carla Flatequal and senior co-captain Carol Talbert organized very successful pep rallies, while Connie Madison and the other cheerleaders made posters to place around the school. The posters not only livened up the usually barren halls, but they also promoted various events very well. Northwood's reputation of lacking school spirit quickly died away when the other county schools saw the number of Northwood students filling the stands. The enthusiasm exuded by seniors Ellen Heller, Terry Wright, and Jill lVlcCarren, and juniors Becky Smith, Karen Claggett, and Robyn Rubenstein carried over to the crowd. The cheer- leaders' work was well worth the effort as school spirit remained at a high level all year despite occasional losses. Manette Van Devanter tries to take a rebound away from an opponent.
