X s 5 QE t X t Q g . Senior Durwood Yates lets loose with a tremendous heave of the discus. 118 Sports Thinclads Succeed To Utmost Potential Talented sophomores and much improved juniors and seniors helped Northwood on to a successful track season. Beginning with a strong showing against exceptionally powerful Walter Johnson, individual performances improved throughout the year. After winning a close meet over Walt Whitman by sweeping the triple jump, the Indians went to the County Relays. In this meet, a test of team depth, Northwood unofficially tied for second place on the strength of their field events. ln Northwood's only relay victory Durvvood Yates, Walt Loope, and Doren lndritz won the shot put relay. The same three placed third in the discus relay. Co-captain Jon Kolkin led the broad jumpers and the triple jumpers to two second place finishes. Dave Baker, also a co-captain, along with Kolkin, Jerry Kelly, and Ron Bergeron placed third in the mile relay. Sprinters senior Rob Silberman, junior Paul Blocher, and sophomores Steve Sanders, Gary Lyst and Rufus Gore helped the team all season by placing in the 100 and 220 yard dashes, and often winning the 440 and 880 relays. Sophomore Crig Callio, juniors Tom Rhiel, Richard Dunnigan, and Bret Dunkleman, and seniors Mark Briehl and Gary Levine provided the team with points in the distance events. With possible county medalists Durwood Yates in the shot and discus, Jon Kolkin in the broad and triple jumps, Dave Baker in the low hurdles, and the mile relay team, Northwood should do well in the county meet to close out a good season. Senior co-captain Dave Baker starts fast as he leads off the mile relay.
