THE PRESIDENT Prospective college students often find difficulty in deciding where they should spend their college days. ln 1850 a group of young business and professional men of Chicago found difficulty in deciding where to establish Northwestern University-their prospective educational institution. They investigated sites west and north west of Chicago but none seemed to be entirely satisfactory. There neverhad been a university founded on a large body of water and it did not occur to them that their university might well be established on l.alce Michigan. On a bright spring day a committee of these young men while on a tour of investigation were driving on the trail which is now Ridge Avenue. When they had reached a point directly west of our present campus they caught a glimpse of l.alce Michigan which appealed to them as an object of beauty. To get a better view of the lal4e they got out of their carriage and waded through the slough and bushes, hastened through the oal4 grove, and finally came in full view of the lal4e. There- upon Qrrington Lunt threw up his hands and cried Eurel4a l Fromthatday increasing numbers of prospective students have come to inspect Northwestern either in Evanston or in Chicago, and as they have seen the beautiful setting of the campus they have cried: l have found the place where l shall spend my university life . The search for beauty has been one of the factors that has attracted students to Northwestern-the University on the lalce. WALTER DILL SCOTT Noted the world over as the man who introduced the use of psychology into advertising and salesmanship, Walter Dill Scott, himself a member of the Class of Liberal Arts 1895, has been president of the University since 1990. Dr. Scott, who joined the Northwestern faculty in 1901, has also been director of Carnegie Tech's salesmanship bureau, and held a colonel's commission during the World War, when he served as director of the United States Army personnel. l l
