The grunt and groan boys had a terrifir- session in their opening engagement with the matmen of the University ol' Chicago. After trailing by a 13-0 defieit, they got out their best muscles and pulled the match out ol' the fire 21-13. As ol' the time ol' this writing, the season is in its inl'anc'y, but Coach Wes Brown, ex-Lt. Conunander in the Navy, and former Conference Wrestling Champion, expects great things from his boys. Navy wrestlers of the team showing great promise are Jefferson, Whittier, Turner, Natke, Potter, Farley, Kulyan, Cullen, Golder, Gillespie, Pearson, and Glass, The team's man- ager is John Call me Irish Brunelli. Here's to a great season gang . . Old N.U. is really in the swim again, and small wonder, what with all the Navy men forming the nucleus of the Wildcat Aquateers. The boys in blue listed on this year's squad include Westii Hansen, versatile athlete who was a mainstay on the Purple eleven at the tackle positiong Graham Davis, Captain of the tankers, who specializes in the distance outings as the 440 yard race, Johnny Neville, outstanding sprinter, Phil Clark and Diek Kimball, divers deluxe, Joe Merriman and 1 l Swimmfhg Left to right: P. C. Clark J. T. Neville R. E. Kimball G. Davis W. A. Hansen Frank Wilson, relay man and baekstroke per- former respectively. So far, so good. Competing against some of the better college teams in the country, N.U. has split even thus far, having lost to Great Lakes, Michigan State, and Michigan Y., and then proceeding to tie together a winning streak of three straight against Iowa, Purdue, and most recently Minnesota. We look for even greater things to come. 61

Bdskefbdll Buzz WIIEELER MAX Monnis Yo! Yo!-a familiar cry of the fans, when a denizen of the hardwood has dribbled his way through the burly opposition, made that fake, and Swish , a bucket. Its a cry often heard these days from the vocal apparatus of the fans of the Purple and White, since the occasion often presents itself. Starting practically from scratch, Coach Arthur Dutch Londborg has gathe1'ed together a formidable five, and once again the Navy is not to be denied. Why we have none other than Max Morris, Captain and last year's Big Nine Scoring Champ and All American, to head the list. Then there's Buzz Wheeler, recent transfer from Gus- tavus Adolphus, who frequently comes up with one of those thrillers from way out. Wee Kas basketball men goj Bob MacTaggart is another first stringer who has had his heroical moments- poor Michigan! And let us not forget the excel- lent floor work of one Bud Carter, Chicago product, who also dons the Navy blue. My, My, this could go on for hours. The season started off in, bang-up fashion, the Wildcats amassing a seven game winning streak 60 Bon MAcTAec:En'r Bun Ciurrnn against such foes as DePauw, Great Lakes, Western Michigan, Michigan, Purdue and Mar- quette. A momentary letdown followed during which two games were lost, to Illinois and Mich- igan. A repeat performance of the previous win over a strong Great Lakes outit started the boys on their winning ways again, as a result of which Wfisconsin became the next victim. So, at the present accounting, the Wildcats are proceeding at a .600 clip in the Big Nine race, and are far from being considered a breather game by any opponent, past or future. No doubt, due mostly to inexpericnce, and considering the fact that it is their first season playing together as a unit, the basket boys will lose their share. But we'll go on record now as having said that t hey'll come up with some honeys when its least expected, and break the hearts of some powerhouse outfits. One of the fastest moving sports in existence, and one of the hardest on the participants, its best designated as rugged from the word Ngo . But that's the way the Navy likes it, and so do our boys, being typical lads in blue. An exciting game, a stimulating team-Yo! Yo!

Boxing In the picture above is shown the kind of boxing that was featured in the navy bouts last year. They were, as all who remember them will attest, quite good Hghts from every angle. However this year's crop of fighters is every bit as good and much more in condition fortherigors of the ring. Under supervision of civilian instructor E. J. Ryan and SpfA 3c C. R. Fulnier, the boys went through a workout every afternoon that would have exhausted any but the most hardy. With sore backs and painful muscles they learned that being a good pug meant a lot more than just pulling on a pair of pillows. However after a few weeks of practice and much expenditure of energy, every last one of the aspiring Billie Conn's began to show signs of improvement. At the time of this writing, the date of the bouts was not actually decided but the place where they were to be held had been set for Patten Gym. With a ring set up in the middle of the basketball floor, bleachers all around, and the whole unit spectating like mad, the big event is expected to draw a record crowd. 62 Some of the promising looking fighters include such big guns as Big Joe Giansircusa, Red Wong, and .Iohn Nahabedian. Bill Buck is another fighter who looks as if he could really take care of himself. Under the guiding hand of Eddie Ryan, these lads and the other 14 who comprise the boxing team cannot help putting on a good show. Thanks for the idea of an all navy boxing team goes to Lt. B. M. Follet.1,Mr. Follet was the man who first thought of the show and the one who arranged all the details. Shooting lefts and rights is not strictly in his field, but his interest in the things that the average trainee likes, makes it. easy for him to know just what will go over big. Trophies for the winners of the various bouts, suitably made for engraving, have been ordered and are to be presented to the winners right after the fights. So for the winners, at least, those arduous afternoons in the basement of Patten will not have been wasted.
