oofball 1 . MAX Momus lion McKiNi.m' MINNESOTA Don't like to cry in our beer, but here is one thatfs really hard to dope out, A Gopher eleven that later collapsed terribly, managed to get our sign and trounce us by a 30-7 margin. No alibis, no excuses, just tough luck, and the breaks in the schedule. Scoring honors for N.U. went to Marx lVIorris on a long pass from Jim Farrar. OHIO STATIBI Another highly touted eleven got the scare of their life while being outplayed and outscored, for the first 57 minutes of aibitutereontest. How- ever, the Purple jinx persisted, and the Buckeyes managed to foot one over the crossbar for a vital three points-final score Ohio State 16, N.U. 14. What a blow! Never did like Columbus anyway. WISCONSIN A trip to America's dairyland developed into a defeat of the Badger Boys from Madison, 28-14, with Morris and Gorski, our superb ends, scoring once each on passes, and our butterball backfield man, Dick Connors, scoring twice. We could say this one was On NVisconsin . N OTRE DAME The inevitable loss to the Fighting Irish from South Bend presented itself in the next game by a BILL TRAXVERS HAP MURPHY 34-7 figure. The gang started off with a bang but were unable to maintain the rapid pace and were soon with the also rans. What do you mean I'm prejudiced? What if I do own a piece of Rockne Memorial? Hap Murphy was the boy who did himself proud and goes down in history as one of the few Middle Westerners to score on Mr. Football. ILLINOIS The season windup pitted our game eleven against a highly spirited Fighting Illini, in the first contest for the possession of Sweet Sioux , a symbolic Indian trophy, and the result was as it should have been, with the final score reading- Wildcats 13, Illinois 6. Once again the star performer was Smilin'Hap Murphy who carried the ball 31 times and gained a total of 153 yards- who's this guy Superman? Season honors went to the boys in blue, V-12 Max Morris, N. U. Captain and end, who was selected on many all-American teams Ctoo numer- ous to mentionj, and NROTC Dick Conners, fieet. and shifty halfbaekt, who received honorable mention on the All-Conference team, was elected Most Valuable Player? by his teammates, and placed third in the voting for the Leagues Most Valuable Player Award. A great sport, a thrilling season, a really fine team. . . 59

,M Varsity DICK CONNERS WEs'r1 HANsEN T he best spirited team I have ever coached. These were the words of Coach Lyn Waldorf in praise of our fine 1946 eleven. A great team that overcame a very dismal outlook to become a power to contend with during the last season's Big Nine Campaign. Such stalwart Navy performers as Morris, Mc- Kinley, Bairstow, Murphy, Stegen, Hansen, Travers, and Gorski overcame the handicap of inexperience to become a well-knitted Hght-ing organization that rose to the occasion in many instances. Now for a brief resume of the season: N.U.-IOWA STATE A driving rain ushered in the season, and after much tloundering about in the mud of Dyche Stadium, the Wildcats took the measure of a game swift bunch of boys from Iowa, 18-6. Touch- downs were scored by Dick Connors, Hap Murphy, dz Bruce Bairstow. INDIANA Bo McMil1in's pore little boys came to town with victory on their minds and slaughter in their hearts, but luckily escaped with their scalps, as they managed to come from behind to tie the amazing Purple 7-7, after having been badly outplayed the entire game. This proved to be the only blemish on an otherwise perfect season for 58 STAN Gonski Hmm STEGEN the Champion Hoosiers, and the boy that made an indelible mark was the Milwaukee flash , Stan Gorski, who recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for the N.U. score early in the first period. MICHIGAN One of those days when nothing seems to go right caught up with our boys, and as a result, the Wolverines were victorious 20-7. But we were not without our bright spots, as Dick Connors, The Candy Kid from Carmel High in Chicago got off on one of his typical solos, a 54 yard dash which resulted in a touchdown. Bruce Bairstow also got away on a terrific run, but alas and alack, it was called back, and this proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back. PURDUE The highspot of the entire season proved to be the Purdue game, with our boys pulling off the upset of upsets by conquering a highly favored Boilermaker eleven by a 26-13 count, thus top- pling the Maroon and Gold from the undefeated class. Was DeMoss's face red!! Scores in this game we1'e credited to Conners, Bairstow, and two for McKinley. It was a truly creditable per- formance and a fitting outcome for the annual Homecoming Game.

Bdskefbdll Buzz WIIEELER MAX Monnis Yo! Yo!-a familiar cry of the fans, when a denizen of the hardwood has dribbled his way through the burly opposition, made that fake, and Swish , a bucket. Its a cry often heard these days from the vocal apparatus of the fans of the Purple and White, since the occasion often presents itself. Starting practically from scratch, Coach Arthur Dutch Londborg has gathe1'ed together a formidable five, and once again the Navy is not to be denied. Why we have none other than Max Morris, Captain and last year's Big Nine Scoring Champ and All American, to head the list. Then there's Buzz Wheeler, recent transfer from Gus- tavus Adolphus, who frequently comes up with one of those thrillers from way out. Wee Kas basketball men goj Bob MacTaggart is another first stringer who has had his heroical moments- poor Michigan! And let us not forget the excel- lent floor work of one Bud Carter, Chicago product, who also dons the Navy blue. My, My, this could go on for hours. The season started off in, bang-up fashion, the Wildcats amassing a seven game winning streak 60 Bon MAcTAec:En'r Bun Ciurrnn against such foes as DePauw, Great Lakes, Western Michigan, Michigan, Purdue and Mar- quette. A momentary letdown followed during which two games were lost, to Illinois and Mich- igan. A repeat performance of the previous win over a strong Great Lakes outit started the boys on their winning ways again, as a result of which Wfisconsin became the next victim. So, at the present accounting, the Wildcats are proceeding at a .600 clip in the Big Nine race, and are far from being considered a breather game by any opponent, past or future. No doubt, due mostly to inexpericnce, and considering the fact that it is their first season playing together as a unit, the basket boys will lose their share. But we'll go on record now as having said that t hey'll come up with some honeys when its least expected, and break the hearts of some powerhouse outfits. One of the fastest moving sports in existence, and one of the hardest on the participants, its best designated as rugged from the word Ngo . But that's the way the Navy likes it, and so do our boys, being typical lads in blue. An exciting game, a stimulating team-Yo! Yo!
