LT. Comm. M. D. ALCORN LT. B. M. FOLLE1' L'r. tJGJ D. MCMILI,AN 14 WELFARE DEPARTMENT This department has really come into its own during the last semester. Under the direction of Lt. Comdr. M. D. Alcorn, the innovation of weekly movies gave everyone, officers and men alike, the opportunity to spend Wednesday evening in doing something more enjoyable than sitting around waiting for Thursday to arrive. Mr. Alcorn was also responsible for the Christmas gifts which were passed out to all trainees as aholidaygesture on the part of the navy. Welfare fund finances made possible the C'hrist- mas trees that we1'e a featured part of the scene in every house during the middle of December. The welfare fund is obtained from the profits of the canteen. A.ll the money taken in after operating expenses have been paid is turned ever to lVIr. Alcorn to be placed in the welfare fund. Then when there is some extra that benefits all hands, the welfare fund is the source which pays for it. ATI-ILETI C DEPARTMENT Under the direction of Lt. B. M. Follet, the Athletic Department, functions to give a physical conditioning program to all the members of the unit. Despite the constant drone of groans, moans, and gripes that goes on about the severity of the P. T. classes, there are very few men in the unit that would not miss them, were'P. T. classes suddenly discon- tinued. Patten Gym echos every day to the sounds of hard-working RO bodies. Athletic specialists Fulmer, Fisher, Fee, and Cliristiansen, Mr. Follet's right hand men and the RO's own personal war criminals, see to it that every one is properly exhausted by the time the end of the P.T. period rolls around. However, the program is sufficiently varied to give all hands the benefit of instruction in the noble sports of boxing, basketball, swimming, tumbling, and basic fTl1e sport to this consists in trying to escape the eagle eyes of the instructor when he says push-ups and the instructees say no push-ups. j. DISBURSING DEPARTMENT The disbursing department is, in the eyes of the trainees, the most important department on the base, for it is from this source which they get their monthly pay. The first Wednesday after the fifteenth of every month designated payday and on this day all trainees swarm to the line at Swift, with pay slip in their hand and an empty billfold in their pocket. After a short wait in the line of one or maybe two hours, he leaves the other end with some crisp new bills. At this end however, it is neces- sary to repay all debts and buy necessities, which will leave the trainee in about the same financial situation as before entering the line, but it was a great experience anyway. Until recently the disbursing department was headed by Lt. fjgb Mc- Milland and is new under the direction of Lt. fjgj Harris. Mr. Harris graduated from line ohicers school at Columbia and went to sea aboard the USS Brazos. After a time at the Boston Navy Yard, he went to Harvard Supply School and thence came to Northwestern as Disbursing Oflicer.
