In the dynamic age that is the twentieth century, it is very easy to strike a chord in harmony with the mood of the moment. It is quite another matter to be in tune with the thought and heart of the best of the ages. The principal obligation of higher education is to provide an awareness of all that is worthy within the heritage of the human kind. This sensibility is not limited to mere knowledge, but is concerned with an appraisal of that which we have learned. Northwestern State College attempts not merely to provide knowledge and insight into the arts and the sciences, but is infinitely devoted to values. Without disparagement of that vast realm wherein we acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to contemporary living, we yet hold that these are but means to an end. There is evidence of a quickening of perception and conscience on the part of a large number of stu- dents on our campus. Those who carefully look through the pages of the Potpourri over the years will find evidence that in the midst of fun there is seriousness of purpose. If the framework of purpose, the paradox of un- paralleled human achievement and great ignorance of so many of the profundities of existence can not fail to jolt the most complacent. Even the boastful must finally be convinced of the need for deep hu- mility. With the recognition that learning is a challenge beyond compare, may all of us work together to achieve the exhilaration that springs from accomp- lishment rooted in mutual tolerance and steadfast- ness of high purpose. THE DEANS SYLVAN W. NELKEN Dean of Administration DUDLEY G. FULTON Dean of Men The Dean of Women and the Dean of Men are responsible for the general welfare and happiness of the entire stu- dent body. Their services to Northwest- ern State College are numerous and time consuming. The duties of the Dean of Women are not limited to the academic phase of the women students ' life but reach out to include work with social programs. She also serves as ad- visor of their student government. Responsibilities of the Dean of Men range from assisting with the colleges social program to giving counseling aid outside the academic area of the school. In addition, his duties include such mat- ters as discipline, financial problems, and advisor for the social fraternities on the campus. FRANCES ELLEN PORTER Dean of Women LUCILE M.
