JOHN S. KYSER. PRESIDENT We must learn, if we are not already aware, that loud self-expression is not to be confused with good judgment, let alone profundity. In the midst of unparalleled opportunities for self-development, we must consult not merely our instructors but our conscience. We need to repeat the old truth that realization of self must not be at the expense of another or others. The exercise of self-discipline in our contemporary environment of an almost limit- less pattern of choices means that there are corresponding opportunities either for the display of weakness or the achievement of truly great character. Those who would build character on the basis of an enforced narrowing of the range of choices are seemingly unaware that strength of character comes only through the application of right values to the making of choices. Let those who can find nothing right in our current society ponder this truism. It is surely clear that the attainment of this goal of making right choices by the students and faculty of our college community must be achieved through close living together. Abstract respect on the part of both is not enough. We must strive to intensifj the existing pattern of cordial personal relationships. We must strike the right balance between and among things already achieved, those being experienced, and. finally, those that are hoped for. A re we doing this ' . ' ' Let us look carefully through the pages of the 1956 Potpourri: and. if we do so with true perception. I have complete confidence that we will discover enough evidence to answer the question with an unqualified YES! ( PRESIDENT
