U f s ?t â– â– erald Tilleux — Edit lobby Byles — Associate Editor • Dencil Taylor — Business Manager • Melvin Long — Associate Business Manager no THE LEGEND There once lived in Louisiana a beautiful French maiden whose beauty was renowned throughout the state. And, as anyone would know, this maiden had as many suitors as she cared to count, but there was one who received her favor above all others. And, of course, he was the most handsome and the finest of all, in the opinion of this beautiful young girl. But alas! How could she know that disgrace was to h_e fate of the gallant suitor, and that he was to be ible duel of honor. the delicate face grew pal e aiu mew wan. an d h ow her orient came weak and sorrowful as a dove mourning death of its mate. Grief-stricken and heart-broken, she moved to Natchitoches, but as the years passed, there was nothing that could in any way bring back to her face the once ready smile, or could take fror her face the lines of sorrow and grief. Not unrfl dark stole over the town would she venture out of her solitary confinement to wander under the old trees surrounding the mansion. Some said that she had become quite mad, while others said that she walked under the trees to meet the spirit fi her lover who waited there. Perhaps rumors of this came to th maiden; per- haps the burden of living became ao great, for one morning, after a great storm had aged through the night, she was found dead in he room. A knife was beside her, and on the wall by her was the bloody print of her hand as it had rasped out as she fell. According to legend the ghost of the fair maiden still dwells in the oldest milding on the Northwest- ern campus, and when t is torn down, she moves to the next one. At present she resides in Caldwell Hall, in front of wKich stand the last three remain- ing columns of tl e old mansion in which she died. If you look ha d enough you can even find on one of the walls, handprint which appeared there the night she moved in. But wbal do you suppose the young maiden ' s ghost se s as SHE LOOKS AT NORTHWESTERN TODAY SHE SEES THE ? .. 13 W IT TODAY In fromXof Caldwell are the haU tfand weather-worn steht built so jiwfftv years ago, steps that many feet have trod. There is the water tower, the very symbol of Northwestern, with its large N glowing in the night. The sundial, the president ' s home — these and many others, all symbols of the campus we love so dear. SHE I WITH US IN OUR CLASSES How different the classeVpf today are from those she must have attended. Do yoV suppose she attends any of them to learn the latest theories of govern- ment or a new style of writing an l iglish theme? Don ' t you think she would enjoy the all-cotlege pic- nic, the Freshman party, the Freshman day parade ami the many other activities participated in by the students on the campus today? OUR ACTIVITIES ti % + SHE WALKS No matter where we go, she is with us — in our work and in our play. BESIDE US FROM DAY TO DAY I ' , .-,,,.,.? L rL I ' IK, %m OUR PUS If we are happy, then she laughs with us. If we are sad, then she weeps for us, for she is as much a part of our life at Northwestern as are our classes and our activities. -4 ■' ■• â– n m S - DAUGHTERS OF NORTHWESTERN And when ever one i gone, and the stairs in Caldwell are empty, how do you suppose she feel ' . ' Yes, she feels proud, for although she will miss those she has grown fond of. she knows that there will he others to take their places. In the years t come, they will continue to tread the halls of Cald- well in search of knowledge, and she will alwa - ! «• there to lend whatever assistance she can. 9 WE PROUDLY There is an old proverb which states Those who seek not honor for their deeds find honor waiting for them along the way. It is with this thought in mind that the one chosen to receive a long deserved recognition has been se- lected. Because he has given so unselfishly of his time to anyone who has asked his help, and because he has asked nothing in return, the 1956 Potpourri is dedicated to Mr. Paul H. Keyser. D EDICATE THIS 1956 POTPOURRI â– I 0 A. Mill 5 ' â– SJ a M AS SHE SEES ADMINISTRATION â– ; 3 â– I I I£ m t â– -A.tbl JOHN S. KYSER. PRESIDENT We must learn, if we are not already aware, that loud self-expression is not to be confused with good judgment, let alone profundity. In the midst of unparalleled opportunities for self-development, we must consult not merely our instructors but our conscience. We need to repeat the old truth that realization of self must not be at the expense of another or others. The exercise of self-discipline in our contemporary environment of an almost limit- less pattern of choices means that there are corresponding opportunities either for the display of weakness or the achievement of truly great character. Those who would build character on the basis of an enforced narrowing of the range of choices are seemingly unaware that strength of character comes only through the application of right values to the making of choices. Let those who can find nothing right in our current society ponder this truism. It is surely clear that the attainment of this goal of making right choices by the students and faculty of our college community must be achieved through close living together. Abstract respect on the part of both is not enough. We must strive to intensifj the existing pattern of cordial personal relationships. We must strike the right balance between and among things already achieved, those being experienced, and. finally, those that are hoped for. A re we doing this ' . ' ' Let us look carefully through the pages of the 1956 Potpourri: and. if we do so with true perception. I have complete confidence that we will discover enough evidence to answer the question with an unqualified YES! ( PRESIDENT THE ADMINISTRATORS First Kow : Otis K. Crew Registrai I)i Di.i.i (.. As it has since that ear. the Sauce informs, interprets, entertains, takes stands, land makes a few typographical errors, i In a sense, the L956 edition is a paradoxical combina- tion of econonn and extravagance. Believing that one photo is worth 10.000 words, the Sauce has substituted pictures for words mam times. Picture coverage, oc- casionallv causing the campus newspaper to resemble a miniature Life magazine, ha- originated a trend t photo- journalism, which the present staff hopes will continue. The cooperation of the community and the college has made possible local ap- pearances, during this season, of such outstanding artists as Eleanor Steber, Metro- politan soprano, Marie Powers and company in The Medium with Menotti ' s Lighter opera The Telephone as a curtain raiser, the Dance Theater Berlin on tour for the first time in America, Daniel Llords and his internationally famous puppet show, and flutists Albert Tipton with Mary Norris at the piano. Unique among the season ' s events was the party given Marie Powers, November 17, in celebration of her birthday. The artist won the hearts of students and towns-people alike with her gracious manner as she responded to the audience ' s singing of Happ} Birthday and the cutting of the two-tiered birthday cake. Probably the greatest lesson to be learned in the free and quickening atmosphere of an American col- lege campus is a true realization of the meaning of the American ideal and why it is worth defending. In the turbulent Twentieth Century where every graduate of every college emerges into a world in full possession of the power to destroy itself, the preserva- tion of America depends more than ever upon the strength of character of those who come forth to lead her. Delano Brister and Gerald Tilleux. Brister. Tilleux, and Jo D. Brown are the only members who will be completing their last year as members, so the team should be in good shape next fall. Although this is not a varsity sport at Northwestern, mosl other colleges consider it so and take great pride in their rifle teams. There is more to it than shooting tin cans, bottles or ducks. It is a precision sport which takes hours of constant practice and preparation. QUIT LOOKING AT THE CAMERA. DEMON FOOTBALL SOI 1 131 V f •• STPLTt Head Football Coach Harry Turpin, Backfielcl Coach Alvin Brown, and Line Coach Walter Ledet. McNeese had accomplished such a prodigious rebuilding program, from coach on down to the substitutes, that they were picked in a pre-season poll to finish behind the Demons and La. Tech in the third place niche. But the 1955 season was one, as ofttimes happens, when predictions are about as truthful as the flaunts of a tornado. And McNeese, confident and stubborn in its goal toward a football stronghold in the GSC, dealt the Demons their most stunning blow of the season, 14-6. Eugene Smiley Christmas, team manager, in cover- up job. The blow on the scoreboard was only part of the loss, for in injuries the toll began to sound ominously. Louisiana College surrendered to the most decisive victory in 7 years as the Demons romped. 34-7. For the first time in four games NSC has parlayed its strategy and determination into a satisfactory fruition in the scoring columns. As if always, the game of the year was the annual State Fair game in Shreveport against our arch-rivals, La. Tech. To the 8000 onlookers, and to the players themselves, the 1955 NSC-Tech clash on the gridiron was one to be remem- bered. Though favored to lose by 2 touchdowns, the Demons came as close as they could without a tie, 21-20. But the contents of the scoreboard as the final horn sounded isn ' t what is to be remembered. It is how La. Tech was caught napping, and had to call upon their best abilities to down a stubborn and determined pack of demons. The Bulldogs went into the game with a cocky attitude, but when the dust had settled their confidence had been torn to shreds, to be replaced by respect. NSC had taught Tech a new lesson in respect of your op- ponent. The Demons had accepted their handicap of their ace halfback being sidelined in a wheelchair with a torn knee cartilage, and had done what one can ask no more of anyone — â– to do your best. But once again the injury jinx spread like wildfire. Before the next game with Howard Payne College, of Brownwood. Texas, arrived, the Demons had five starters on the injury list. And though a new and promising quarterback, Billy Wayne Johnson, and a dependable halfback, Judson Hale, accepted their new roles with remarkable zeal and effort, the end led to defeat. 12-7. James Red McNew, having recovered from his injury in the La. Tech game, led the Demons to a 28-7 rampage over Luckless Northeast State.
