The Student Council, executive of the associa- tion, consisted of 14 members until the spring of 1944, when by a revision of the constitution, the membership was reduced to 10 and the office of Secretary-Treasurer of the Student Body was di- vided into two separate offices. 0 I Wigfiv jtf ftp ' BOBBIE ANTHONY Editor-in-Chief STAFF BOBBIE ANTHONY Editor-in-Chief I LA NICHOLS Associate Editor RALPH E. I LA NICHOLS Associate Editor At the beginning of the school year a great ma- jority of students, including those on the POT- POURRI staff, questioned greatly the possiblity of a 1946 POTPOURRI because of an acute short- age of materials required in the production of an annual at the time. A chant consisting of some- thing like the following, No photographer, no film, no flashbulbs, no cover materials available, echoed through the South Wing of Fine Arts Build- ing for weeks; but one bright Wednesday after- noon found all of these obstacles removed, and the POTPOURRI office was once more filled with people who were eager to begin work on the col- lege annual. Now, after many weeks of work, worry, and some play, the staff has produced what it hopes is an accurate record of your school year at Northwestern State College. We hope you like it! MARION TUT BERARD Editor-in-Chief MARGARET NEILL Business Manager ey, Killen, Killgore, Knotts, Nichols, Potts, Tucker, Willis, Winn. the (lav in players Davis Players is composed of students invited to membership upon the basis of the quality of their work in Junior Dramatics or other dramatics work on the campus. With a membership limited to thirty, they take the lead in sponsoring an extensive dramatic program for Northwestern State. Two major productions were given this year. A Murder Has Been Ar- ranged, a ghost story, was produced in the fall. In April the comedy, Skidding, an Andy Hardy play, was presented. Both plays were directed by Dr. Robert B. Capel, a member of the Speech Department staff. Three members, Louise Wardlaw, I la Nichols, and Susan Jones, directed one-act plays with casts selected from Junior Dramatics. These plays were presented in the Little Theatre before large and appreciative audiences. • OFFICERS KATHLEEN KILLEN President LOUISE WARDLAW First Vice-President I LA NICHOLS Second Vice-President VIRGINIA WINN Secretary-Treasurer SUSAN JONES Reporter • MEMBERS William Flory Joyce Killgore Marion Potts Richard Dean Lois Knotts Marion Tucker Anna Frances Hubley lla Nichols Al C. The band participated in all football games, bond rallies, and gave its two annual concerts of the school year. The organization is looking forward to progressive growth in personal and public appearances. THE BAND ' S THREE MAJORETTES THE NORTHWESTERN STATE COLLEGE BAND I i THE COLLEGE SINGERS MR. The first public appearance of the chorus this year was at the Christmas program which was acclaimed an overwhelming success. Throughout the year, the Chorus and the Singers were praised not only as a musical organization, but as a public service as well. 39 First Row: Aycock. Boudreaux. Cade, Clark, Collier. Farrow. The purpose of the organization is embodied in the motto — Service. Membership in this honor society for women is based upon scholarship, leadership, and loyalty to the Alma Mater. The aim of each Purple Jacket girl is the building of a greater Northwestern State College, to this end the group remains ready to serve. Two teams on the squad fought their way through for championships of the Mid-South and the South when Richard Dean and Robert Weimar, Ralph Ropp and Billy Flory tied for the championship of the junior men ' s division at the Mid-South tournament held at Arkadelphia, Arkansas, in December and Ropp and Flory took first place in the junior bracket of the annual tournament of the Southern Speech Association in Atlanta, Georgia, in March. The squad as a whole made a good record, winning more than fifty per cent of the year ' s contests. 42 The Demonaires, newly organized swing band on the campus, replaced the Swing Queens this fall as the official college dance band. TONY PALAZZO Fifty coeds were nominated by the male portion of the student body as candidates for the 1945-46 beauties, and veterans of World War II attending school here named twenty-five of these girls as can- didates for the final selection. Photographs of the girls were sent to Mr. Tony Palazzo, General Art Director for Esquire, who selected fifteen of these girls as beauties and arranged them in the order in which he thought they should appear. MARGARET NEILL the court Cade, Courtney, C. R., Ross, Marmande, Callender, Kuhn, Seegers. Woodall, Clark, Courtney, C, Anth miss potpourri, selected by the staff, u as pre sen ted at the third annual potpourri ball with her court of eleven maids. potpourri freshman beauties the 1945 season The Demon gridmen wrote a blazing finis on their 1945 season by smashing the Southwestern Louisiana Institute Bulldogs 13 to 0 in a brilliant Turkey Day game staged as a homecoming affair on McNapsy Field in Lafayette before a crowd of 7,000 fans. The Turkey Day win for the Demons left them tied for second place with the Bulldogs in Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference circles, since each eleven had won one and tied one of four battles in the loop. The Demons dropped their games to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, 18 to 7, and 7 to 2; and the Southwest- ern Bulldogs lost by a close 14 to 12 score to the Techmen in the first game but downed their North Louisiana rivals in the second meetings, 13 to 7. Twenty-four members of the Demon grid squad were awarded letters by the athletic committee of the college at the close of the season. The list of lettermen includes two seniors, two juniors, four sophomores, 14 freshmen, and two members of the Navy V-5 refresher unit on the campus. Of the 24 N men this year, nine are backs, four are ends, six are tackles, three are guards, and two are centers. In a squad election held after the final game with the South- western Louisiana Bulldogs, Butler Miears, junior guard of Spring- hill, was named captain of the 1946 eleven; and William Noonan, end, of Vinton, and Randal Kirkland, back, of Oak Grove, only seniors on this year ' s team, were selected as alternate captains. In addition to Miears, Noonan, and Kirkland, other lettermen on the Demon team selected this year were: Ralph McFarland, junior tackle; Ray Maddry, tackle; L. W. Sibley, back; Donald Rogers, center; and Clea T. Campbell, back, all four sophomores. M. J. Bellipanni, back; Donald Danos, tackle; John Dantoni, center; Orval Hartsell, back; Reggie Hebert, guard; Walter Holder, end; Ray Landry, back; James Edward Ray, back; J. L. Thompson, back; Jerry West, back; James Williams, tackle; Rob- ert Williamson, end; Frances G. Winn, tackle; and James B. Plummer, end, all 14 freshmen. The two Navy enrollee lettermen were William J. Roberts, guard, who was detached from the unit here, and L. R. Steele, tackle, who played the entire season with the Demons. Four lettermen on this year ' s Demon squad were veterans of World War II. They include Kirkland, who lettered on the Demon eleven last year; Maddry, who was a member of the 1941 frosh eleven; Campbell, who transferred here this year from Louisiana College after playing one year from the Wildcats; and McFar- land, all-conference tackle for the Demons in 1942. Ben George Crocker, freshman, was awarded an N as mana- ger of the 1945 squad. 109 SELMAN FIELD, 13; NORTHWEST- ERN STATE COLLEGE, 0 Led by Co-Captains Butler Miears and Bill Noonan, the 1945 Northwestern State football team bowed to a formidable Selman Field eleven in th e opening game f th ( Throughout the first half the Demons com- pletely outplayed and outgained the Cyclones, gaining 85 yards from scrimmage and five first downs to 41 yards and one first down for Selman. The Demon line battled the Monroe Airmen to a standstill for three quarters, but in the waning minutes of the game succumbed to the combined power, age, and experience of the service eleven. The only major scoring threat made in the first half came in the final moments of the second quarter when the Demons led by Hartzell and Thompson penetrated to the Selman Field 22-yard stripe. Several plays later the half ended. On the third play from scrimmage, the Starting Lineup Demons fumbled on their own 13 and Selman recovered. On the first play the Cyclones moved to the four-yard line and in the next play crashed over for a score. Sel- man gained the ball on the Demons ' 32-yard line due to a faulty pass from the Demon center. On a series of line plays climaxed by a four-yard line plunge, the Cyclones scored. LAKE CHARLES ARMY AIR BASE, 0; NORTHWESTERN STATE COLLEGE, 7 In a game featured by defensive play, the Demons won a 7-0 victory over the powerful Lake Charles Army Air Base eleven September 29. The first quarter was p ' ayed on even terms with both Miears, captain; Kirkland and Noonan, alternate captains. team s threatening on numerous occasions. However, the Invaders pene lr ated farther on their drives than did the Demons. The Demons scored on a sustained drive from the 50-yard line midway of the second quarter. The drive was climaxed by Hartsel ' s run from the seven-yard stripe to pay-dirt, which gave the Demons a 6 0 !ejd. Williamson, left end, kicked the extra point to make the score 7-0. The last quarter was played almost entirely in Demon territory with the Airmen advancing as far a; ihe five-yard line. They carried the ova! to the 22 on two other occasions and to the 15 once, but each time the line held. LANDRY, Fullback SOUTHWESTERN LOUISIANA INSTITUTE, 0; NORTHWESTERN STATE COLLEGE, 0 In their opening conference game of the 1945 season, the Demons fought the Southwestern Bulldogs to a scoreless tie. Practically the entire game was played be- tween the 20 -yard stripes with the Demons holding the advantage over the Lafayette eleven by picking up five first downs to two for the down-state visitors. The Third stanza was a nip and tuck affair with neither eleven gaining the advantage at any stage, but the fourth quarter definitely belonged to the Bulldogs when they intercepted a Demon pass on the home eleven ' s 40-yard stripe and moved to the 12. The Demons lost their closest chance to score in the second quarter when they kicked out of bounds on the Bulldog ' s seven-yard stripe and then threw the visitors to their one-yard line when they tried a pair of line plays. The Demons outclassed the Bulldogs on the ground by picking up 82 yards net from rushing to 54 for the Bulldogs. The game ended in a BARKSDALE FIELD, 19; NORTHWESTERN STATE COLLEGE, 6 The Demons lost their third service game of the season when they dropped a l9-to-6 decision to the powerful Barksdale Field Sky Raiders on the state fair grounds gridiron in Shreveport before 6,000 fans. The Raiders scored in the second and fourth quarters, and the Demons made their marker in the second stanza. The Airmen struck out on a cleverly executed triple pass, secondly, on a blocked punt, and thirdly, on a spectacular 95-yard run on an intercepted pass. The Demons scored when they struck back after re- ceiving the kick-off follow- ing the Raiders ' first touch- down. The marker was set up by Ray and Thompson, who raced down the east sideline to the three-yard mark where Ray was forced out of bounds. Ray took the oval on the third down. The Demons ' aerial de- fense kept the Raiders from breaking loose after they learned their running attack was hopeless. The Demons went to air in the last period and had the ball on the Airmen ' s 20- yard stripe when the game ended. The Northwestern State gridmen bowed to the Selman Field Cyclones in a hard-fought battle that ended 13 to 0. The loss to the Cyclones was the second of the season for the Demons. The Demons missed the golden opportunities to score when they pushed the oval to the nine-yard stripe on one occasion and to the one- foot line on another. Both times the Cyclone line held. The Cyclone scores came from a 25-yard pass in the end zone and on a 69-yard run. The Demons struck early in the first quarter when they scored a safety by smothering Dalrymple who received a bad pass from center in the Tech end zone. The Demons threatened on two occasions, once on the Tech two-yard iine in the first quarter, a second time in the third quarter, when Noonan, end, blocked a Bull- dog punt on the Tech 20, and Miears, right guard, re- covered but slipped down in a clear field on the Tech nine-yard line, where the visitors held. Outplaying the Bulldogs in every department for the first three quarters, the Demons picked up 135 net yards by rushing and seven yards in a pass for eight first downs, against a total of 98 net yards by rushing, a six-yard pass, and seven first downs for the Bulldogs. The Demons completely outplayed the Bulldogs in every way, allowing them to penetrate their territory only once during the entire game when they advanced to the 45 yard line at the end of five minutes of play. The Demons struck first in the closing minutes of the second quarter when West carried the ball over from the one-yard stripe after advancing from the 38-yard line on the previous play. Campbell ' s try for the extra point was blocked. The second score was made in the last seconds of the game when Landry slashed 29 yards through the entire Bulldog eleven and went over for a score. Camp- bell made the extra point good with Thompson holding. The setup for the second touchdown came after the Bulldogs failed to make a first down on their own 36- yard line. Taking the ball from here the Demons made a first down on two plunges netting four and seven yards respectively, and then picked up six yards to put them on the 29-yard line. From the 29 stripe Landry made his sensational run on the second down with five seconds in the game. basketball A study of the Demon ' s cage schedule this Ocie Richie, captain, paced the Demon cage- year reveals that Coach H.
