Fifteen students participated in two tourna- ments — the Mid-South Tournament in Conway, Arkansas, and the Louisiana Speech Tournament held on the Northwest- ern State campus. Maxine Frye, standing, and Eloise Richmond received second place honors in the women ' s division at the Mid-South Tournament.

THE SWING QUEENS Another instance of women taking over on the homefront in the absence of men was shown in the fall of 1942 when the Swing Queens were organized on the campus. The Swing Queens took the place of the Swing Kings who left school to join the country ' s armed forces. The Swing Queens carried on by furnishing music for the social affairs of the college. Their splendid work will not be forgotten. This year ' s members were: Marjorie Barre, sax; Jo Haworth, sax; Lucy Matthews, sax; Kathryn King, sax; Penelope Clark, leader and trumpet; Vir- ginia Martin, trumpet; Patricia Harrison, trumpet; Beth Caldwell, trombone; Betty Jean Kuhn, string bass; Barbara Graves, piano; Mildred Courtney, drums.

HIV II-I IUKAKU CAPEL I I ( .LUTON FARROW JONES MILLER NICHOLS STOVALL WARDLAW WESTALL VC ' HATLEY D R M T THK DA VIS Two major productions presented by Davis Players during the year were George Washington Slept Here, directed by Miss Thera Stovall, and The Lady Who Came to Stay, directed by Dr. Robert B. Capel. Belcw and on the opposite page are four scenes showing steps in the producing of The Lady Who Came To Stay, try- outs, painting of scenery, rehearsal, and a scene from the play. The Davis Players, the oldest extant dramatic club at North- western State College of Louisiana, was organized by Miss Mary Frances Davis. During the next five years it grew in popularity and upon Miss Davis ' resignation, Miss Annetta L. Wood joined the college faculty and took over the sponsorship. Davis Players were responsible for the bringing to the campus of Delta Eta Cast of Alpha Psi Omega, honorary dramatic frater- nity, in 1933, and of the organization of Junior Dramatic Club, open to all students, in 1935. It has also sponsored the annual Lesche Play contest for the best one-act drama concerned with Louisiana history or legend, the prizes for which have been awarded each year since 1919 by the Lesche Club, a Natchitoches woman ' s club.
