THE SWING QUEENS Another instance of women taking over on the homefront in the absence of men was shown in the fall of 1942 when the Swing Queens were organized on the campus. The Swing Queens took the place of the Swing Kings who left school to join the country ' s armed forces. The Swing Queens carried on by furnishing music for the social affairs of the college. Their splendid work will not be forgotten. This year ' s members were: Marjorie Barre, sax; Jo Haworth, sax; Lucy Matthews, sax; Kathryn King, sax; Penelope Clark, leader and trumpet; Vir- ginia Martin, trumpet; Patricia Harrison, trumpet; Beth Caldwell, trombone; Betty Jean Kuhn, string bass; Barbara Graves, piano; Mildred Courtney, drums.

The Choir made its appearance on the campus again after a year ' s absence because of the lack of Tenors and Basses. With an increased number of men students on the campus and with the cooperation of the Navy personnel, it was possible to have a mixed choir once more. The 1944-45 Choir furnished music for the annual Christmas Pageant, presented two Choral programs and assisted in the music for the Baccalaureate Services. The Choir was conducted by Walter A. Mason and accompanied by Mrs. Joyce Lyon Towns. okuZSL THE CHOIR
