The purpose of this organization is to regulate all matters pertaining to the student hfe of its members which do not fall under the jurisdiction of the faculty. The Student Council acts as an executive body for the Student Body Associa- tion and supervises the activities of the student organizations, bringing them into closer cooperation with one another, also with the faculty and administration of the college. Bottom: The servants come to tea at Lord Loam ' s. kBW ' A new era in dramatic activity opened in 1940 on the Normal campus with the opening of the Fine Arts Building. With its magnificent large auditorium, the Little Theatre, complete lighting equipment, and a varied stock of scenery, this building afforded the Dra- matic Club its first opportunity to produce its work on a professional scale. A workshop in the basement allowed the building of stage sets by members as well as by members of dramatics classes. The employment of Thera Stovall as a member of the Speech Department augmented the capable work of Annetta Wood, Miss Stovall directing The Adiiiira- ble Crichton, first major production of the year. Miss Wood directed Death Takes a Holiday, second major production. An innovation was the production of Dramatic Hours monthly under the direction of experienced club members. These included The Maker of Dreams, under direction of Melba Halbert; The Hrink of Silence, under Iva Blanche Butler, and The Val- iant, under V. A. Dunham, all being produced in the l ittle Theatre. Here, too, plays of the classes in play production were given. The Junior Dramatics Club was active during the school year, giving Don ' t Take My Penny during January. Alpha Psi Omega, national honorary dramatics fra- ternity for those obtaining a high standard in dramat- ics and holding a high scholastic average, continued its activities. The Trio — Migues, Boucher and Wiggins — made the 20 points for Normal with ease, with the beautiful blocking of their teammates letting them average 7.2 yards per try. Four minutes of the first quar- ter had passed when ' Bama Wright broke through the Thor- oughbred line to block and recover a punt on the Murray 25- yard line, from where Wiggins scored the first touchdown of the season. Ted Wright, Demon quarterback, converted to put Normal seven points to the good. Five minutes later Boucher handed the ball to Migues on a reverse, who crossed the goal line standing up. The second period showed the reserves holding the Kentuckians in every threat. After the half the Demons be- gan clicking again, and in a few plays had the ball on their op- ponents ' 36-yard line, from where Boucher skirted left end for the final score for the Demons, Ted Wright again converting perfectly to give the Demons a final score of 20 to 6. October 4, Natchitoches, Louisiana The Demons took on the Southeastern Lions in their first L. I. C. competition to win a 32 to victory. Theophile Scott, Coonie Migues and Ernie Tyler, plus the timely blocking and heads-up football of the entire Turpin-Brown gridders, gave the Lions the unwanted defeat. The Lions tried 29 passes, 15 of them being good for yardage, the Demons intercepting three. Scott gained his first recognition of the year when he gathered in a Lion punt and traveled to their 17; from there he went o er standing up on the second try for his first touchdown. Twice more Alman Marron, quarterback, sent Scott on scoring jaunts, once in the second quarter for seven yards, and in the fourth on a 12-yard push. The third score was set up when Tyler blocked a Lion punt and Dunham recovered on the opposition ' s five. Early in the third quarter Tyler scored on a 19-yard end-around jaunt. Sweeney ' s 21-yard end run set up Scott ' s third touch- down in the final period, thus leaving the Lions 32 points short. Priest, Bramlett and Scurria contributed pass interceptions. The Demon followers saw an excellent show in blocking, while Wig- gins ' toe was used to an advantage in keeping the Lions ' backs to the wall. The Demons struck oil in the second period, when Theophile Scott flipped a 20-yard pass to Herrel Minter in the end zone. Tyler was rushed into the game to make a perfect conversion from placement. The Turpinites were denied further markers by an inspired Wildcat team that tackled savagely and waited for the breaks. The Demons were able to go, but not across the goal line. The Wildcats ' offense was stopped cold, but when they broke through to block Wiggins ' punt on his own 30-yard line a touchdown was born. Their conver- sion tied Normal for the first time in two seasons. The one first down that the Wildcats made was on a 15-yard penalty. The Demons made an even dozen. Wearers of the Purple and White displayed a neat brand of defensive ball; Dunham recovered an enemy fumble and Tyler blocked a punt. Al Subat threw Wildcat backs for repeated losses, as did Sam Scurria and David Bramlett. No one can say the Normal line failed to do its job. Captain Blub Miller and Eddie Schumacher, Pete Martin and Ralph Priest were bulwarks in the line. All of the regulars and many of the reserves saw service, stopping every thrust. Nevertheless, it was a moral victory for the Wildcats to end the Home- coming classic in a 7-7 tie with the Demons, who had been neither tied nor defeated in 13 starts. NORMAL, 13; LOUISIANA TECH. October 19, Louisiana State Fair, Shreveport, Louisiana The Louisiana State Fair fans were given their thrills when they saw the Demons and the Bulldogs tangle in their annual football classic. The game was played on almost even terms for the first half, but the second half found the Demons scrapping harder. They finally hit pay dirt after Migues completed a 15-yard pass to Bama Wright and the Coon got 20 yards at tackle; then an end-around by Tyler for 15 yards and Migues went over for six points, with Tyler making the conversion. Not more than five minutes later, after Tech was held for downs on Normal ' s 10-yard line, Migues faked a reverse to Sweeney and broke into the open. Perfect blocking in the secondary by his mates put him 20 yards ahead of the nearest Bulldog as he went over the goal line. The Bulldogs came back in a desperate aerial attack to try to break into the scoring column, but time was too short and the final whistle stopped them on the Demons ' nine-yard line. The Brain Thrust [121] NORMAL. 7; CENTENARY, October 25, Natchitoches, Louisiana In a sensational climax to a thrill-packed contest, again it was Coonie Migues who came through with a 78-yard jaunt in the final minutes of the game to give the De- mons their winning margin of seven points. The Maroon and White Gentlemen came to the Demons ' camp for the first time and brought out a crowd of over 7,000, who were brought to their feet many times dur- ing the game. The Demons ' bag of tricks was almost empty when, with the ball on the Demons ' 22-yard line and only eight min- utes left to play, Migues, in the wingback slot, took the ball from Haynes and trav- eled alone 78 yards for the only score of the game. Cotton Barnes, Gent safety, made a valiant effort to stop the touchdown run, but he was left sprawling on the turf after his attempt to tackle. The Gents, underdogs at the beginning whistle, fought hard, and for three quarters outclassed the favored Demons. Once, in the third quarter, the Gents were in posses- sion of the ball on the Demons ' one-yard stripe, but the slippery fingers of Big Chief Johnson caused a fumble and the Demons recovered. A predominating factor in pro- tecting the undefeated record was the stellar work of the forward wall, headed by Cap- tain Miller and Tyler and Wright, wing- men. A. in the closing minutes of play shattered the winning streak of the Demon team in its seventeenth contest. The Lumberjacks scored in the opening period from the two-yard line, after a 64-yard drive sparked by Roquemore and Bolton. The Demons came back to tie the score in the second period, when Migues passed 10 yards to Starns, climaxing a 67-yard drive by Boucher and Wiggins. Ted Wright ' s conversion was by placement. In the last minutes of the game S. F. A. ' s Colvin inter- cepted a Demon pass and was halted on the 37-yard line. The next play, having only five seconds to its credit, was a pass into the end zone which handed the Demons its de- feat. The Demons totaled 14 first downs to the Lumber- jacks ' three, and 194 yards to their 100 from rushing. Nevertheless, the touchdowns are usually counted, and so they were here. NORMAL, 9; MISSISSIPPI SOUTHERN, 6 November 9, Natchitoches, Louisiana The Confederates of Mississippi Southern invaded the Demon camp to be honored with the Homecoming game of the Demons. Both teams were held down because of the wet field and rain. There was a punting duel between Mississippi ' s Alessandri and Normal ' s Scott, who kept the Demons out of danger except for the one drive that ended with a score when Jones skirted right end for seven yards. The Demons came back full of fire after the downpour during the halftime and held their opponents in check. Scott returned Alessandri ' s punt 56 yards to the Confed- erates ' 13, from where Migues and Scott alternated in penetrating to the one-foot line, where Scott fumbled, the Southerners recovering. Backed into the end zone to punt. Mississippi ran into bad luck when their tailback was caught by Migues and Martin for a safety. In the fourth period, with both teams fighting like mud hogs, Migues got off a 70-yard punt to the Mississippi one- yard line, where Dew was hit hard by Starns and Wright, Normal ends, and jarred from the ball. In the scramble Wright recovered over the goal, and Ted Wright place- kicked the extra point to put the Demons out in front for a win, 9 to 6. NORMAL, 9; OUICHITA, 6 November 15, Arkadelphia, Arkansas The second quarter saw the first blood drawn by Nor- mal, when Ted Wright kicked a perfect field goal from a difficul t angle, with Sweeney holding the pigskin. In the same quarter the Demons lost the ball on their own nine- yard line due to a fumble. On the next play, Foots Lafitte, stellar end, scored on an end-around for the Lions. Early in the fourth quarter the Demons came back with a beau- tiful 30-yard pass from Wiggins to Migues, who, already in the open, outran his would-have-been tacklers the re- maining distance. NORMAL, 0; TULANE. 47 November 23, New Orleans, Louisiana It is hard to look good while being defeated by a score of 47 to 0, but the Demons did just that. Outmanned, outweighed, and outnumbered. Coaches Turpin ' s and Brown ' s little boys limited the Creenies to two scores in the first period and one in each of the next two quarters, but, weakened by injuries and being hammered all over the field, had to falter in the final period and give up three scores for a final of 47 to 0. It was in the third period that the Bulldogs came from behind and, with a 12-7 victory, took the conference championship from the Normal team. The Demons started the game in full strength, with the exception of Wiggins, but received a telling blow in the first quarter when Ted Wright had to leave the game with badly battered ribs. Normal drove 69 yards in the second period to draw first blood on a 12-yard pass from Scott to ' Bama Wright. Tyler converted the kick for the extra point to give the Demons a seven-point lead at the half. In the third quarter the Bulldogs made a 65-yard drive featuring Neil ' s 47-yard jaunt to score. The tally came on a 13- yard pass from Neil to Patin. Then the S. L. I. gridders put the game on ice in the final period when Votier, sophomore tailback, took Scott ' s punt on the Southwestern 30 and, behind vicious and well-timed blocking, crossed the Demon goal for the final marker of the afternoon. The winners amassed 15 first downs and 262 yards by rushing, with 36 from passes, for a total of 298 net yards gained, while the Demons made 13 first downs and 165 yards from rushing and 120 from passes for a total of 285 net yards earned. Lee Prather began his twenty - seventh year as cage mentor with a senior-sophomore ball club, and also introduced a new method of leadership of his cagers by appointing a cap- tain for each game instead of electing a full - season leader. The five seniors that be- gan the season on the hard- wood were Cummings and McElroy at forwards, Briley at center, and Starnes and Boswell at guards. Before the season was very far un- der way McElroy was checked by illness and big Red Thomas standing 5 ft. 4 in., and tipping the scales at 137 lbs., stepped in and carried on the senior line-up. The Demon cagers had a schedule of nineteen games, PLAYERS Cummings, Boswell, Thomas, Briley, Starnes, McCoy, Botzong out of which they lost only two — the first to Southeast- ern of Durant, Oklahoma, in the second game of the season, and the other to the Southwestern Louisiana In- stitute Bulldogs. In their second meeting the Demons downed the Lafayette boys, which placed the two teams in a tie for top honors in the Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference. In their 19 games the Demons piled up 919 points for an average of 48.3 points per game. Lanky center Josh Briley scored 340 of the 919 points, and, while doing so, broke the L. I. McGhce, Parks. Third Row: Riddick, Shaw, Wright. The Wesley Foundation is the Methodist Church at work on the campus of the State College and University. It seeks, through a program of worship, Bible study, service, and recreation, to give students an interpretation of Christianity as the way of life and to lead them into a place of leadership and service through the Church. The Wesley Foundation program was set up on the campus of Louisiana State Normal in September, 1939. The Stu- dent Center in the Student Religious Building is a home for the student away from home. Here the student may find understanding, companionship, and fellowship that is real. All students from Methodist and Christian homes belong to the Wesley Foundation and any who are interested are welcome. OFFICERS Katherine Sii.aw . . It is a unit in both the State and South-wide Baptist Student Union. The Union has no direct membership, but is composed of all Baptist students who are members of the unit organizations of the local Baptist Church, the Sunday School, Baptist Training Union, and Young Women ' s Auxiliary. Its work is directed by an executive council and committees which make up the larger council, under the leadership of the pastor of the local church and the student counselor, who is maintained by the church. This year, for the first time, the Normal B. S. U. reached the standard requirements for First Magnitude Baptist Stu- dent Union, which is quite a distinction and achievement.
