FO REWORD Qlo Konor t ie legends of Louisiana, to acquaint you with the student activities of the State Normal College, and to recall happy hours and fond memories of our Alma Mater are the purpose of this Evangeline volume of the Potpourri. NTENT I ADMIMSTRATION 11 CLASSES 111 VANITY FAIR IV. ORQANIZATIONS V. ATHLETICS VI. CAMPUS Vll MEMORIES This is the forest primeval. The murmeiing pines atid the hemlocl(s. Bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight. Stand lit(e Druids of old, ivith voices sad and prophetic. Stand lilfe harpers hoar, with beards thai rest on their bosoms. Loud from its roclf caverns, the deep-voiced neighboring ocean Speaf(s, and in accents disconsolate answers the wail of the forest. This is the forest primeval; but where are the hearts that beneath it Leaped lilfe the roe, when he hears in the woodland the voice of the huntsman ? Where is the thatch-roofed village, the home of Acadian farmers — Men whose lives glided on like rivers that Water the woodlands. Darkened fop shadott ' s of earth, but reflecting an image of heaven? Waste are those pleasant farms, and the farmers forever departed! Scattered like dust and leaves, when the mighty blasts of October Seize them, and whirl them aloft, and sprinkle them far o ' er the ocean. Naught but tradition remains of the beautiful village of Grand-Pre. Ye who believe in affection that hopes, and endures, and is patient. Ye who believe in the beaut]) and strength of rvomans devotion. List to the mournful tradition, still sung by the pines of the forest; List to a Tale of Love in Acadia, home of the happy. I ' iT T. The purpose of the Association is to deepen the thinking of the students, broaden their sympathies and widen the reach of their love. It endeavors to pro- mote fellowship among the yo ung women, to bring them into closer relationship with their churches, to encourage service for others; but most of all, it challenges them to take Christ seriously, to study conditions in the world today, and to apply intelligently the principles of Christ ' s teachings to actual conditions in life. In order that the Y.W.C.A. may be more closely affiliated with the National Y and thus know and study all world and national problems, it sends delegates each year to a summer conference. These delegates return in the fall with renewed enthusiasm to carry on the work of the coming year. The Association was repre- sented last summer at Monte Ne by Constance McReynolds, Ethlyn Bowers, Frances Griffin, Lola Hoag, Mary Lee Beckett, Mattie Sue Nicholson, Florence Greer, Christine Thompson and Myra Whitman. -J) SJKyrjpoiTRxii = Newman Club Cabinet Left to right — Champagne, Beary, Marks, Allday, Price, Buttitta, Carville, Schexnayder, Ayo, Chustz, Jones, Chapron, Picou. It was organized by students in order to give an oppor- tunity to prepare programs, to become familiar with the art of speaking before an audience, to learn the general rules of parliamentary law practice, and to acquire the art of dealing with their fellows. Other societies have since been formed but S.A.K. still holds the position of one of the strongest societies. The members of S.A.K. especially enjoy the con- tests which are the source of much wholesome rivalry. They have carried off many of the honorable laurels. During the year 1926, the Inter-Society Debate was won by Truett L. Scarborough and A. D. O ' Neal, and the Declamation was won by Lola Hoag. Seekers After Knowledge, that to accomplish the best results in literary activities a new rival society should be formed. From the beginning the Eclectic Literary Society has lived up to the expec- tations that the founders had. Slowly and carefully E.L.S. has built her foundations upon a rock and today has become one of the most progressive societies. The mem- bers of E.L.S. have won many of the contests that they have entered. In athletics the society has been outstanding. At the close of the 1927 Inter- Society Basketball Tournament this year, the E.L.S. team gained possession of the S. and H. Kaffie loving cup. For three years the society has been victorious and the cup now remains in the hands of E.L.S. The history of E.L.S. is an interesting one, a story of rapid progress and de- velopment. Reding Treasurer Elmer Sims Critic Melba Crawford Editor Modern Culture Club HPhe Modern Culture Club was organized in 1902 in order to meet the demand for more literary societies. Since that time M.C.C. has grown until it now ranks as one of the leading organizations on the campus. The members of this club believe in the motto Through Difficulties to the Skies ; and with this in mind they have taken active part in debate, oratory, decla- mation, quartette, and basketball. Time and again they have carried away honors in these events. One of the leading factors in the success of M.C.C. may be found in the fact that every contest finds her loyal members upholding the Green and Gold. M.C.C. has been active in parliamentary law work this year. The class entering the inter-society contest in the fall ran a close second for honors. The following were members of the class: Cecil Miller, Parliamentarian Gertrude Chustz Neil Caldwell c. o. horton LoRiMER Storey Marie Holton Elva Hunter J u ANITA Robertson Jesse Webb Celeste Smith nrrT n Caspari Literary Club A o o Officers FALL TERM Elise Robins President Cloie Land Vice-Pres. Literary Club T Tnder the guidance of Professor A. Z, Thomas the members of Caspari Literary Club worked diligently and untiringly to do all they could to advance literary work to a greater and higher degree of efficiency. This was well shown in the planning of their programs and in their active Parliamentary Law Class. This class was composed of the following persons: Jessie Mae Wheelis. Parliamentarian Zelda Worley, Secretary Maybelle Gaudin Alice Holt Vera Johnson Opal Moore Elise Robin Mabel Schexnayder DeEsther Waters Alma Watson At the end of the term the members decided to disband until September, 1 928, because so many of the members were in the graduating class. Since the C.L.C spirit may be expressed in the words, Impossible is Un-American, the organization will continue to live and again be active during the coming year. His eye was always on the ball as well as the opponent and he was the leading point getter for the team. REDING Elbert Reding worked in the center position and was a good relief man to Hanchey. Redmg could always be depended on as an able player and will make a good man next year. CALDWELL Neil Red Caldwell is a great guard ac- cording to those who faced him or tried to out- guess him on the court. Red was always on hand to take the ball off the back-board and his ability to pass the ball was excellent. WALKER Elmo Walker saw a little action in the guard post where he gained experience that will be valuable next year. MILLER Captain Cecil Lightning Miller, although not quite as good this season as he has been, was the backbone of the team or in other words, the brains of the team. He is a fast forward and could always locate his team-mates with the ball. DICKEY Duncan Sam Dickey is another forward like Sims. Duncan and Elmer were always working together in the game and they were a fast pair. The two are expected to be good next year. Jt SIMS Elmer Dog Sims did not get into much action as a forward, but when he was sent in to play he did plenty of that. Sims will be a great help to the coach next year. AIKEN Earl Home Aiken, like Caldwell, played in the guard post. Earl and Red worked won- ders on the court together. After a game the opponent would always say that it was those two guards that beat them. BORDELON B. J. Bordelon is the other main forward of the unofficial state champion team. Bordelon is a great fighter and was one of the high point men. E.L.S. Basketball Team Winners of 1927 Inter-Society Basketball Tournament. Miscellaneous Still stands the forest primeval; but far away from its shadoTv, Side by side, in their nameless graves, the lovers are sleeping. Under the humble walls of the little Catholic churchyard. In the heart of the city they lie, unknown and unnoticed. Daily the tides of life go ebbing and flowing beside them. Thousands of throbbing hearts, where theirs are at rest forever. Thousands of aching brains, where theirs no longer are busy. Thousands of toiling hands, where theirs have ceased from their labors. Thousands of weary feet, where theirs have completed their journey! Still stands the forest primeval; but under the shade of its branches Dwells another race, with other customs and language. Onl}) along the shore of the mournful and misty Atlantic Linger a few Acadian peasants, n hose fathers from exile Wandered bacl( to their native land to die in its bosom. In the fisherman ' s cot the rvheel and the loom are still busy; Maidens still wear their Norman caps and their dirties of homespun. And by the evening fire repeat Evangeline ' s stor}).
