Treasurer THE SPIRIT OF NORMAL Write me as one that loves his c on men. All the philosophies of the ages are subservient to the one here expressed. Love, the most beautiful of all words, rings like the iweetesl melodies. Love, the greatest gift of God to man, is the light of life, tin- sunshine of the soul. In the heart of man. God placed love and faith and then made the promise that all other things would be added. So the trusty man, his heart being right, raises his head with re- newed strength and serves God and His creatures, nobly and well. Faithful to his fellowmen. he marches on with unfaltering steps; and the world lays, I his is a loyal man. Loyal? Yes. He stops not when the battle is over, for it is then that the work is barely begun. With a firmness of purpose, he continue- to serve, not aware of his reward, not knowing that He ' s the noble who advances Freedom and the Cause of Man. Deeds ever so small yet ever so noble and kind, service unending and great — these are the work of loyal and faithful men. Scattering the sunbeam- to the darkest corners, singing the menage of lo e where music is unheard and unknown these are the noble services I hey may not take the form of spectacular play; they m.t be far removed from glory, praise and applause; for The tumult and the thouting (Jh I he captaim and fcmgj depart .S i stands Thine ancient sacrifice; An humble and contrite heart. Colors: Pink and Lavender. Flower: Sweet Pea OFFICERS: Pauline Olmstead President ELISE FoOTE Vice-President Willie Mae Jackson Secretary Come for a minute, today, with me To the land of Pierian Spring, Where you will draw draughts of knowledge That will cause your mem ' ry to ring. Whether its ring be dim or clear, Whether its ring be true, Whether its ring be false, perhaps, Will all depend on you. This wonderful Spring is an echo Of what your past has been — The echo of golden schooldays, Of joys and sorrows seen. And when you taste of its waters, It must not be a sip, Because you must drink deep or else — Twill be a worthless trip. ' Far down below the shadows Are precious drops of worth, And there you ' ll gain the knowledge Of mingled joy and mirth. You ' ll taste of mathematics, Of History, — English too; But mark me — taste not lightly; Or else the game you ' ll rue! For there ' s a certain motto Which all are warned to heed, And as you come upon it Lo! this is what you ' ll read: Drink deep — or taste not of the Pierian Spring A little learning is a dangerous thing! FLOWER: Chrysanthemum OFFICERS: Clarence Doyle President DORIS LaLLANDE Vice-President Sue Forman Secretary) ' GREEN BUT GROWING Springtime is the time of youth, Birds and Bees and Flowers; When the lads and lassies bright, Spend such happy hours. Trees and flowers stay in bloom And birds do gaily sing, Youth is full of jollity, In the time of spring. We are part of springtime too, And spend many hours Wondering just how to grow, Shedding April showers. For you see we ' re very tired. Being cultivated ; And we hope no one will say, In vain have you waited. For we hope to sprout right up, (We are ever growing.) Adding to the knowledge past. Other things we ' re knowing. And we hope to blossom out. Dewy, fresh, and bright, So that Mother Earth may say, What a lovely sight. So although the tempests rage, And March winds are blowing. Full of ups and downs ; Some are beggers, some are kings, Wearing golden crowns. People never understand, That is some folks don ' t; When they ' re given to make good, They just simply won ' t. We are somewhat different, As you soon will see; Though we ' re just beginning. Great we ' re bound to be. Life to us is almost As a baseball game. Where the man who ' s batting. Gets the praise or blame. When he hits a good one, And he makes his base, Folks seem mighty proud of him, As joy lights each face. Soon he makes another base, Home is getting near, Then another boosts the score, Crowds begin to cheer. So will our steady team Ever try for more. That is why our motto is This: On First — Now Score. It is a Catholic organization, the motives of which are to propagate the Catholic faith, to pray for sinners and the faithful departed, and to do charitable work. The Apostleship of Prayer is at present clothing and educating a little girl, and giving necessary aid to her family. A second work of charity carried on by the organization is the loan of a sum of money to the Normal College Alumni Association for the pur- pose of giving aid to any sixth termer who is not financially able to com- plete his course. The meetings are held regularly every Sunday in one of the class rooms where a program which consists of an opening prayer, hymns, relig- ious stories, and some religious reading is given. The Reverend Father Peguay visits the circle occasionally at which time he addresses it. This organization affords every Catholic member at the Normal an opportunity to spend an hour every Sunday afternoon in religious worship. The aim of the Association is properly termed by its statutes, uni- versal ; that is, one that every Catholic can and should strive for ; one that embraces every good object; and one that can be attained in some measure by every good work accomplished. The means employed to attain this object are, in general, prayer, whether mental or vocal ; and good works of all kinds offered in union wi th the heart of Christ our Lord. The Young Women ' s Christian Association seeks to help girls in their quest for life at its best ; to change this quest into the realization that it becomes; to deepen thinking; to break down barriers; and to widen the reach of our love. The young Women ' s Christian Association endeavors to promote fellowship among young women, to bring them into closer relation- ship with all mankind, to encourage service for others ; but, most of all, it challenges students to take Christ seriously, to study conditions in the world today and then intelligently apply Christ ' s principles as revealed in His life to actual conditions of life at the present. On the campus, projects are carried out in race relations, world fel- lowship, industry, war, and Bible Study. In addition to these projects there are devotional services every Sunday evening; Morning Watch, a service of prayer and worship, every morning before breakfast ; and prayer meetings at least once a week. Various social gatherings bring the girls together and add joy to their college life. But there is no doubt that the greatest joy of all comes in the realization that girls are really thinking and seeking to live life in its richest, fullest sense. TALLEY Social Committee Cecil Miller Discussion Groups The aim of the Young Men ' s Christian Association is to bring the young men into a closer personal relationship with their Creator, God, and Savior, Christ. This aim is to be accomplished by a threefold development of spirit, mind, and body. No man can be clean spiritually until he is clean mentally, nor can he be clean mentally until he is clean physically; therefore it is for this reason solely that the Young Men ' s Christian As- sociation movement is initially physical. It must not be supposed, how- ever, that because the other elements are rarely heard of that they are ab- sent. Such is never the case. Especially is this true in regard to the student department of which this Association is a part. The students of the Young Men ' s Christian Association leave athletics to the control of the school and devote their energy to the improvement of the students, mentally, spiritually, and morally. The Young Men ' s Christian Association of the Louisiana State Normal College is a live organization of over fifty members. It maintains a higher score than any of the other student Associations in this district. It has been represented at all conferences, conventions, and council meet- ings held in this section of the state. The Association here expects to send four men to the ten-day Summer Conference at Blue Ridge, North Carolina, in June. Normal will be sure to feel the power of the Young Men ' s Christian Association during the coming year. (181) b .., V CURRENT. COLLEGE n y From left to right — Soears. Cromwell. Gibson.
