MONFORT who was known to all as nj. W. , was in reality a pioneer in many ways. Besides making the Run into Oklahoma in 1893, he was identified with the beginning and pioneering of almost every successful civic development in Northwestern Oklahoma. xx ' H ASA ' The most courageous undertaking of these early pioneers was the steadfast determination to make Alva an educational center. In the spring of 1897, the legislature located the second State Normal School of Oklahoma in Alva, but they failed to make an appropriation for any kind of building. Immediately the pioneer business people of Alva held rous- ing town meetings, determined to erect a suitable building them- selves while the opportunity was in their grasp. Approximately sixty men were organized to subscribe to a building fund of S110,000 to guarantee the contractors in case the legislature later refused. john W. Monfort was the last of these original resourceful pioneers who made it possible for the Old Castle on the Hill of Northwestern College fame, to begin-to grow, and to develop. Throughout his fifty-four years in Alva he was constantly a staunch supporter of everything that Northwestern has attained. It is fitting to say that J.
