Since its inception it has contributed approximately 351000 to the College Building Fund. This was done primarily by selling chances on a Model A Ford which is scheduled to be an annual function of the club. Besides raising money, the club has sponsored the Spring Picnic, college dances, and this year is having a Beard-Growing Contest. 46 Row 1-john Gilmore, Lee Smith, Bill Sipple, john Walkley. In spite of the drizzle that lasted all day, it proved to be a very successful clean-up day. Over 300 students, free from classes for the day, and all of the faculty members turned out in their oldest work clothes to carry out the many tasks set up by various committees. Among the many odd jobs, there are raking, shoveling, painting, cutting of trees and hauling of brush. A new parking lot was created by some hardy boys and our new bulldozer, under the management of whoever could Ggure out how to run it. Trees were also planted on the patios and spreading of gravel and dirt, done mostly by some ambitious girls, helped to make the basis for our future sunken gardens. A hearty meal was served by the College Council in the new cafeteria and after a soaking afternoon of work, everyone turned out in full for a dance, also in the cafeteria. 57 N.M.C. students turned out in full costume for the French Club's annual lllasquerade dance which was held in the college cafeteria on No- vember l. Five dollars in cash was to be given to the person who guessed the identity of the Mystery Person, but no one could Hgure out who it was and everyone was surprised when Al Gray was unmasked at the end of the evening. WF 9 9 I' C1 58 9 Dance Sadie Hawkins In traditional dog-patch style, N. M. C. girls dragged the boys to the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance, sponsored by A.YV.S. and footed the bill for the evening. The dance was held November 22, in the college cafeteria. The college dance band pro- vided music for slow dancing, with Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Jenks on hand to call and supervise square dancing. Dance Homecoming Queen N.M.C. students and guests danced in a semi-formal atmosphere to the music of jim Martin's Orchestra at the sixth annual Homecoming Dance. Sponsored by the Pep and Varsity Clubs, the dance was held in the college cafeteria following the Homecoming game with Bay City on Saturday, November 30. . Queen Shari YVardell reigned over the occasion and was crowned by Coach Johnson at intermission. Her court was composed of Mickey Freeman, Barb Reid, Judy Kiblinger and Sue Haase. Decorations carried out the theme of Harvest Fest . Committee chairmen for the decorations were Marlaine I-Ianrath and Jo Peck. Court fy at 4-we 60 Homecoming This year two new events were added to Northwestern's annual Homecoming festivities: a car parade and a pep rally. The pep rally was held Thursday, November 27, in the evening. All the trees and brush that were chopped down on Campus Day was piled up out behind the school and was used for a huge bonhre which burned for nearly three hours. A skit was put on by the Pep Club and the members of the basketball team were introduced to the student body. The cheerleaders led the crowd in many cheers and a good time was had by all. A car parade, held Saturday, November 30, in the afternoon gathered cars of all sizes and shapes which were decorated in many different ways. The Homecoming Queen and her court rode in specially decorated cars and the different clubs each had a car, usually a convertible, and students sitting in them with signs. The parade originated at the college and proceeded down Front Street to the end. These two events did a lot to add to the school spirit and enthusiasm of the student body and at the same time added to the tradition of the school. . A large house, located on East Front Street, was purchased in the summer of 1957 from the County Board of Supervisors. Remodeling was Hnanced by the Zonta Club, and the College House was ready for her first students the fall term of this school year. Mrs. Mary Ellen Krupka, a teacher at Central High School, was housemother during fall and winter terms, but then had to leave to join her husband upon completion of his work at Michigan State University. Mrs. Elizabeth Todd, a teacher at Oak Park School and recent graduate of Central Michigan Col- lege, is now housemother. The dorm is operated on a co-op basis, with cooking, clean- ing and dishes assigned to different girls each Week. There is also a governing board which enforces rules, gives penalties for late hours, etc. Dorm officers are: President, Sharon Skibbeg Vice-President, Annette Nielsong Secretary, Loretta Hogerheide and Carol Kloosterg Social Chairman, Carol Williamsg Historian, Lois Ware. The volunteers received free coffee and rolls for their hard labor. Our new library is now able to accommodate many more students and books. There is no longer a problem of trying to find a seat or to get a magazine from two years ago. Ladders aren't needed to get books from the top shelf and there is room to read the newspaper too. For the first time, the library is open on school nights from 6 to 9. Thus it serves the general public as well as the students. Through the library victrolas, projectors, tape-recorders and screens for movies may be used for classes. 82 E gwxxxx ,- up-f'4 an :xv Q, -.yr Wx 1 ,Q iv ,- ,u .'v 4 Kbrzw gif! 5, Q 1 E E M umm Zig?
