i ■c To Miss Merriam If Northwestern halls could speak Words of praise, And review the memories Of the passing years, If her aging halls Could pay homage To the names Closest to her heart There is no doubt that From her cherished treasures She would choose The brightly smiling face. That sheds a glow of knowledge On us all And say, Our best wishes go with you, Miss Merriam We ' ll miss you here. Talt Malone January, 1961 Class President Page 2 A TRIBUTE TO BEATRICE MERRIAM I have built me a monument more lasting than bronze Horace On cornerstones of faith you built your temple, Working toward what you knew could be. Holding the pliant clay of fertile minds Within discerning hands, You shaped it into sound dimensions And baked it in the oven of experience Until each nameless brick became its own identity. Fitting into usefullness. Revealing strengths and possibilities Undreamed of. You opened the windows of imagination. Dispelled the mist of ignorance To give a vision of the sun and stars. And over all, a crystal dome Looked skyward into limitless horizons. The skyscrapers and one-storied structures Will attest your gift. You may never reconize them as your making, May never know it was your hands, Your love, your understanding. Your faith, your guidance ITiat shaped them all. But tliey will stand Steel-girded and secure In the city of the world Because you have them stones to build upon. Page 26 SENIOR SPADE CEREMONY Talt Malone, president of the January class, presented the spade to Glenna Mixon who represented the June class. This tradition through many years emphasises the common ties between the departing seniors and the next graduating class. After each class adds the colors to the spade the president ad- monishes the successors to maintain the standards and ideals of which Northwestern has long been proud. Page 27 BOY ' S DAY AS POLICE COMMISSIONER - ALBERT GREEN Page 28 Albert Green was elected, along with five other boys, to attend Boy ' s Day Nomination Con- vention on November 20, I960. This meeting was held at the Veterans Memorial Building. After breakfast, the boys started campaigning and caucusing for their boy officials. Albert, because of a good platform paper, was nominated with four others to run for mayor. After placing second in the returns, he chose to serve as Police Commissioner. On November 27, I960, the boys met with their counterparts early in the morning and started their government experience about noon. After Commissioner Hart and Albert appeared on Tele- vision, they went to 1300 Beaubien in a black Police-equiped Imperial. Following the entran-e into the Police Building by a secret door, he was taken through the entire building, including laboratory, jail, pistol range and the Police Academy. He was put in a lineup where he experi- enced a criminal ' s view for identification. In the picture, Albert is signing an order of the day ' s work that the real commissioner (standing) usually does. That night_,he ate dinner with the real commissioner in the Statler-Hilton Hotel. One of the Senior Inspectors drove him home in the front seat of a big-four car. He received a Police Citation and Merit Award for his effort. GLENDA MIXON TODAY ' S TEEN TODAY ' S TEEN is Glenda Mixon of Northwestern High School. She lives with het mother at 4053 See- baldt. (Second row): Marlene Duggan, Ruby Witten, Eura Ivory, Clemintine Snell. GEORGE L. SWEENEY Representative to Boys ' State George L. Sweeney was chosen by our principal, Mr. Arthur E. Diekoff, to attend Boys ' State. A student is chosen for his scholarship and for his participation in school activities. George competed against sever- al other boys from Northwestern. At Boys ' State he obtained a better understanding of our government and how it functions. He also learned a number of facts about mortuary science, the field in which he is most interested. George feels that this experience had a direct influence upon his future plans. Boys State is an annual activity sponsored by our state officials. Joyce Ann Ford Page 47 HENRY CARR Henry Carr has become one of the greatest track and football stars Northwestern High School ever had. He broke the existing National 100 yard dash record and also tied the National 220 yard dash mark. His keen sense of com- petition should some day make him an out- standing sports citizen of our world. If he con- tinues to train and correct his athletic faults, this ambition will come true. His fine disposition makes him well liked by all he meets. Tlie June class of I96I is proud to have him as one of its members. SMITH, M ROBERT HARRIS, STAR OF RESERVE FOOTBALL The I960 Reserve Football Team fans found one thing that was consistant about the coaching staff and quarterbacks; when the going got tough and we were unable to get a drive, that familiar number went into action with none other than Robert Harris wear- ing it. Robert ran the off tackle cut-back plays as well as any high school boy I have seen. Of course he is no Henry Carr in the speed department, but he really carried the ball. He has a good pair of hands and can catch as well as throw a football. I remem- ber the first day he was asked to pass. He said, Well coach, I don ' t know if I can make that pass, but I will sure be happy to try. Sure enough, he threw two touchdown passes. The hard working right halfback scored fourteen touchdowns with the longest one coming as a 95 yard sprint. His total offensive efforts totaled 1,638 yards with 6.8 average per carry. When he was not carrying the ball, he served as a good blocker. One of the boys on the team after the Cody game said, Well, Robert, you won that game for us. He looked up with his usual smile and said, No, the team won the game, and I am only one part of a real good team.
