AFS Monika enjoyed a true American Christmas Monika celebrated Northwestern’s Homecoming. Dear Students and Faculty, I want to thank the school for the great times 1 had. The teachers and students helped me a lot. Thanks for the patience of everybody for answering when 1 didn’t know words or understand something. And I’m glad to learn something about football, it was a pleasure to watch such a great team. I also enjoyed watching basketball. I’m glad that I had the possibility to visit this year. Moni Monika spent much time with her American family. Rusty Porter, Bill Porter, Kim Porter, Mabel Porter, and Monika Schoreman “Porter . Fairtime Fun Fair Week was, traditionally, a very wet week. However, spirits were dampened very little. The competitions, rides and games entertained while musical groups lit up the stage. The Seniors as well as the Juniors had class stands. The events of the week enlightened us all and showed that Albion can pull together even after a crisis. Dianne Leicht, 1984 Albion Fair Queen, crowns the 1985 Queen, Tracy Tomlinson. 1985 Fair Queen, Tracy Tomlinson, and her attendants, Becky Gollmer, Rosie Surovick, and Louise Murkens. 8 On the opening day of the Fair, September 10, 1985, Elementary students released balloons with cards at- tached, thanking recipients of the balloons for their support during the recovery from the tornado disaster. Jim Klobusnik shows just how much his tractor can pull. Cats Come Home Homecoming Week was a big thriller. There was the annual Bon-Fire on Thursday night that was won by the Sophomores. Then during school on Friday, there was an assembly to vote for your choice of Home- coming Queen. Later that night was the football game against Girard followed by the dance. This years Homecoming queen Steph Carr and her attendants Cheryl Glasl and Crissi Merritt. The Juniors hoist the Yellow Jacket to its Fiery death. The score of the game was Northwestern 49- Girard 7. ILLUS- TRATED 11 JUNIOR - SENIOR PROM Scott Merritt and Doug Leicht were two of the sophomore class ushers on hand to greet guests. Cherie Drummond asked John Beatty to ready her camera for action. You were really an outstanding group of people and it was a lot of fun working with you. I know most of you are very anxious to begin your young adult lives, but I hope you will not forget your days at Northwestern. Your infectious spirit has also made Northwestern High School a better place. Do not live day by- day, but prepare for the future. Ask yourself what you can do for your community and yourself. Remember, there are three types of people... people that make things happen, people that watch things happen, and people that ask “What happened?” The challenge and opportunity of the future is yours for the asking. Set your goals high! My sincere thanks are extended to each of the Graduates of the Class of 1986. Sincerely Dr. Andrew Hills I would like to thank the yearbook staff for allowing me to offer my congratula- tions to the Senior Class. As a group you have performed well. Caveman, we laboriously and unquestioningly submit our wills to his every other command. We slaved day after day, night after night to do our best in preserving the memories of North- western for our fellow students. Many a time life and limb were threatened by the man with the big club if we did not “Get to Work!” But finally after much time and effort, we succeeded in preparing a yearbook that met with Cavey’s high standards. We’re looking forward to working with him again next year. RIGHT: Several members wait for the beginning of field practice. 74 This year’s band looked a little doubtful at the beginning of the season. This year we had more inexperienced members join, but everyone learned quickly and the season got underway with the driving forces of spirit and pride behind them. The band consisted of 85 members 50 of them being instrumentalists and the remaining 35 were auxil- iary members. Some of the students putting in extra time and effort were: Barb Ward, J. Sweeney, Becky Gollmer, Co-Captains Drill Team; Lory Fedor, Silk Co-Captain; Lisa Smith, Silk Co- Captain; Lon Sperry, Student Director; Kim Porter. Drum Major. The Band was directed off the Field by Pam and Keith Lenz. The season turned out to be very successful as the band brought home a whole slew of awards again this year including: Three first places, two second places, and one third place trophy. They also finished fourth at the prestigious New York Field Band Competition held in Syracuse. New York, and first at the Lakeshore Marching Band Association Champion- ship show held in Fairview. Caption Awards this year include: Best Marching. Best Music. Best General Effect. Best Soloists, Best Percussion, and Best Drum Major. Aside from competing the band also showed much support for the Wildcat football team during the regular season and the playoff games. All in all it was a very profitable year for the band and they should be proud of their efforts and accomplishments. One More Time! The band marches onto the field to begin its performance. 75 SOPHOMORES 76 David Allshouse Stefanie Ambro Rhonda Anderson Suzanne Balczum James Baldwin Katherine Bashline Dale Best William Borland Doug Brace Charles Brockett Marsha Adams June Albert Amy Allen Christopher Allen John Brookhouser James Bruno Michael Buie Robert Burns 77 Randy Chapin Robi Church Lorilei Copeland Daniel Crocker Todd Daniels William Davison Susan DeLong Shannon Demenik Jennifer DeMichele Elesia Devine John Dohanic Dana Donch Daniel Eaton Karen English George Garbaloff Nona Garlick 78 Melissa Gibson Clifford Glasl John Gollmer David Goodenow Peggy Graham Brian Graves James Hanes Anthony Harrison Jennifer Henck Jeffrey Henderson Walter Henderson Rebecca Hilliard Shelia Hilliard Martin Hoch Deborah Hosack Donald Host 79 Timothy Huya Harry Isiminger Andrea Izbicki David Jones Cindy Joslin Sherri Kapala Christa Karwowski Connie Kean Joanne Keller Matthew Kemling Craig King Trina King Timothy Kingen Kirk Kinnear Charlotte Kinnison Heidi Kirsch Jeffrey Kirsch Kevin Kleckner Elizabeth Konen David Kreider Aaron Kush Donna Lago Terry Lavery Andrew Linder Julie Long Sean McCabe Tracey McCumber Donna McGraw ♦s. 80 Joelle Merritt Bradley Miller Marjorie Miller Kim Moore Melissa Moore James Morley Valerie Mosier Julie Moyer Shelly Murphy Vickie Myhoffer Anna Nicholls Jamie Nims William O’Brien Grace Ohmer Robert Pacansky Norman Parker John Parmarter Cindy Patton Jacqueline Pavolko Kimberly Peckham SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Mark Shreve - Treasurer, Julie Long and Kelly Ratajczak - Historian, Melissa Gibson - Vice President, Katie Bashline - Secretary, Pete Miller - President. A tornado swept through Albion and into Cranesville taking with it 12 lives, and a lifetime full of homes, memories and possessions. The tornado itself passed in a matter of seconds but the destruction it created will take years to rebuild. In 30 seconds the things that took a lifetime to build were ripped apart. Volunteer ambulances and firemen began the task of transporting victims to the hospital. People Helping People The most impressive part of the storm’s aftermath was the outpouring of human emotions - these were not expressed only in sorrow and grief, but also with compas- sion, sympathy, and the need to help others. Local residents and volunteers from around the nation all joined forces to help each other and the affected communities. The compassion that leads people to help others was never so apparent than it has been in Albion and Cranesville in the past year, and it has been appreciated. Volunteers at the food kitchen served the people and the workers during cleanup efforts. Donations of food and clothing from all over the nation poured into the Junior High School. Local volunteers aided in the cleanup of the Robert Baker residence. Mr. Browning, Mr. Haley, and Mrs. Travis helped with the disaster newsletters, which kept residents informed. Officers of the Albion Fire Dept, during the tornado were: H. Shearer, R. Seeley, C. Quay, H. Miller, and K. Graff. These officers and their men donated countless hours to search, rescue, and recovery efforts. Frosty and Tim Crane, officers for the Cranesville Fire Dept, also spent countless hours aiding their communi- ty. Governor Thornburgh talks to two Albion residents National Guard Troops were used to secure the towns of Albion and Cranesville because of the fear of looting. Special People Although many individuals helped in the community’s recovery, there were a few people who really stood above the rest. These outstanding men and women organized and led the recovery efforts. Some of these leaders are pictured on this page, while others must have the satisfaction of knowing that their services were invaluable to their friends and neighbors. We the 1986 Criterion Staff would like to thank you all an behalf of the communities of Albion and Cranesville. Your services were greatly appreciated. Paul Sachar and Rev. James Schmittle were two of the main figures involved in the restoration project. The new Pearl Street home is being built for the Workman Family. Many homes have already been finished with many more being built in the near future. We Will Rise Again Contractors hired by the Federal Emergency Mandate Agency, worked many long hours to remove debris. Debris was trucked to the landfill site where it was burned and buried. Rebuilding immediately had begun, even before all the rubble was cleared. New homes and businesses started to fill in the empty lots left by the tornado. The rebuilding process is still continu- ing and is a fine example of the perseverance shown by the community. Albion Will Rise Again!!!!! The landfill project became a source of conflict between government agencies. The problems were finally resolved when EPA and DER approved the Boro Park site.
