Mr. Lenz, the new director began his teaching career with Northwestern. He de- cided to introduce a new style called “Drum and Bugle, which consisted of a very precise and military- like type of marching. Drum Major Maggie Kulyk was the first female drum major in Northwestern's history. And 1978 was the first year in a series of four con- secutive years which the band did not attend band camp at Camp Kon-O-Kwee. Edinboro Band Com- petition brought a first in that the band received a fourth place award, the highest in the history of the band. It was, all in all, a year of marching North- western will never forget. 12 'The Icing On The Cake Feature Twirler Senior Russ Songer MAJORETTES, L to R — S. King, V. Kehoe, M. Huston, S. This plus having some big dudes jump on top of you (see photo below), you have got to give them credit for trying. 21 Bats in the Belfry A haunting array of talent was displayed on the stage at Northwestern High School as the Senior Class presented Bats in the Belfry. This year was a very good ex- perience for me and I'm very glad I could come here I have learned many new things. (I hope some of you have also learned something from me. At least that people all over the world are basically the same). I sometimes had hard time but every small happening and every little word you have for me created one big and nice memory which I'll always remember. I want to thank everybody for everything you did for me. I always got help from somebody when I needed it. I was very glad to find out how the teachers were always willing to help me and also be friends. Espe- cially warm thanks for those kids who accepted me as your friend. I really appreciate it. If somebody happens to get to travel to Europe you are welcome to visit me. If you would like to you can also write to me. They are enrolled at Northwestern and Erie County Vo-Tech. It isn't easy sharing your time with two schools, particularly when you have to make new friends at one school and see your old friends every other week. The home school seems to forget about you, leaving you out of activities, no matter how hard they try to avoid it. But, after all is said and done, you have two sets of memories on graduation day and a sense of accomplishment for hav- ing gone to different schools at the same time. 77 SENIORS Oh, The Life of a Senior Pretty trick, eh? The History Of The Class of 79 When we were sophomores and just little tots, Wondering whether we'd live or not, Shying away from seniors and all. Hoping in the commons that we wouldn't fall. Very few sophomores were cheerleaders or jocks. Most of us just sat back and watched. Our school had team spirit, boy did we yell. Especially that year, our team did so well. Our football team was the cream of the crop. The Northwestern Wildcats worked their way to the top. The football team went to District 10. The snow put a damper on some of our fun. We had to stay home till the snow was all done. Finally we got in the swing of things. After an extended wait we received our class rings. Our sophomore year slowly came to an end. Eleventh grade days we were about to attend. Our lunior year started a little bit late. The teachers had a struggle, so we had to wait. We started school in mid-September, Exactly what date it’s hard to remember. To sell magazines was the first job of the year. Ten thousand dollars we wanted to clear. The teachers thought we'd never come through, At times we wondered about it too. We struggled to sell through the wind and the rain, Finally we did it, our goal we attained. As juniors we thought we were pretty fine. All over we wrote a proud “79 . Since we were juniors we weren't shy anymore At dances we danced in the middle of the floor. The lunior-Senior Banquet was a big event. All of the invitations had to be sent. The food was all ordered, I think by ton, And passed out by sophomores, one by one. Mr. Buttaccio spoke the most humorous of all And teardrops fell as we listened to Paul. The Madrigals sang their hearts out to us. And for jon Hill's voice the crowds made a fuss. Time to go home, the Banquet was done. Plans for the prom quickly begun. The theme of the prom, “Come Sail Away Ideas grew bigger day alter day. The plans were changed and mixed around, Blake's job was to paint, ours was to pound. June third came when we weren't quite done But that didn't stop us, the prom still begun. After the prom nothing special was near, Except of course the end of the year. We sat in our classes the sun beating down. While the seniors showed off in their caps and gowns. Graduation was set, |une 16th as the date. Farewell to the class of 78. The halls were empty, the days lingered on. But )une 28th came and all students were gone. Summer vacation was short but sweet. We started school again in the heat. The day finally dawned the hour was here. We were actually beginning our senior year. We didn't have to try to be cool. It came to us naturally as we took Over the school. Remember our fright on senior portrait day? If our pictures were gross did we still have to pay? Everything must be perfect, the photographer said', And we smiled and smiled till our faces were red. Our pictures came in, we exchanged with our friends. We started to realize that this year was the end. A class meeting was held, the fair quickly began. And again, of course, we had a great stand. Our announcements were ordered along with caps and gowns A lot of the seniors acted so down. The cliques were no more, the stuck-ups were none The class of 79 came together as one. Sure, we had our problems like everyone does, But we never worried, mostly because Miss Frndak and Mr. B. were always there. And they showed so much that they really did care. I can't wait to get out of this place ' A lot of us said with a grin on our face. But now that graduation is near The grins are beginning to fade to tears. What will we do? Where will we go? Flow many of us really do know? For some of us the joy goes away And the fear gets greater day after day. Look around on Graduation day For all of us will go separate ways. The class clowns might become sincere. And the tough guys may even shed a tear. Sure we'll wonder and we are scared. But there's people behind us that really care. Our Principal, counselors, teachers, and peers Have helped us to cope with all of our fears. The problems will arise and good times will too; But I know, in whatever we do. That WE WILL MAKE IT! AND WE WILL SHINE' FOR WE’RE THE CLASS OF 79 !!!' Above: I bet you can't guess how I do that! At right: And no one even knows my feet hurt.
