Their early season was eliminated by the teacher's strike and it took a lot of hard work on the part of the team to prepare for the post season meets. This win made it possible for the Cats to contin- ue their playoff quest. While on their way to the game at Westminster the player bus was sabotaged on Volant Hill. They had only five seniors to provide the leadership for the squad. Captain Paul Merritt gained second team All-County honors in this his final year. He and the rest of the seniors, lerry Konopa, Greg Allen, Stefan Mechsner, and Beef Baxter will be hard to replace in the future, but a determined group of underclassmen will surely be trying. Takath, 87 Volleyballers Spike Winning Season With only two seniors on the squad most observers figured that the Northwestern High School volleyball team might be headed for a rebuilding year after several highly successful seasons. Just the opposite was true as the Wildcats enjoyed one of their most produc- tive seasons ever, and finishing in the first division of the Erie County League. About the only thing the team did not do was participate in the PIAA playoffs. Wild- cat fans are hopeful that will come next year. I have found that it is a school where people care about each other and I hope that I can contribute to this atmosphere in the future. I wish the best of luck to the Class of 1978 in whatever the future may hold for them. Sincerely, 99 Donald I. Costa Stefan Visits NHS Friends! I'll be gone when you read this and our memories faded a little bit. I want to thank you all for all the nice things you gave to my life and every smile you had for me. They finished the season with 4 wins and 4 losses — not a very impressive record, but much ef- fort was put forth and many individ- ual goals were achieved. Coaches Henderson and Buttaccio greatly helped the team with their advice, encouragement, and fine demon- stration of spirit. Eight Seniors leave this year, but with a strong stock of underclassmen returning next spring, things look good for the NHS Boys Track Team. 102 Bill DeMichele stretches for the finish line Girls Track Strides On A small but spirited group of girls competed in Track and Field under the Northwestern banner in the Spring of 1978. Plagued by injuries and foul weather, they maintained their good humor through it all. Hopefully, the group of a dozen or so underclassmen can look to brighter days in the future. Two girls had outstanding seasons and were re- warded with trips to the PIAA State Track Meet at Shippensburg. Cheryl Sawdy and Debbie Adamson, both seniors, went to the meet by virtue of their qualifying times and distances in the District Ten Meet. Pam shows her determination. Front Row, L to R: C. At right: The Camera Club never takes a good picture (that's a joke, get it?) The Yearbook and Camera Clubs work very closely in organizing and producing a Class A yearbook. There is a lot of work involved in taking pictures, developing and printing them, thinking up a layout, cropping pictures, typing, and getting all this on a final copy perfect, while meeting your deadline. There are so many people involved with this year long project that it is impossible to thank them all personally. However, there are a few we’d like to mention who did outstanding jobs: Mr. Fuller, Mr. Walden, Mark Schmittle, and Mr. Tom Chaffee. We'd like to thank all of you who put in your share of hard work and think you deserve a pat on the back. We urge all the underclassmen to join the yearbook and camera clubs. You are always busy and you really get something out of it. We hope you enjoyed our 1978 yearbook. We think that we deserve a pat on the back too, but if you don't keep your mouth shut. Thanks again everyone. Your Editors, Sue Sedler janet Hayes 136 v. a. JLL .«a i) V m « AS • V1 KSfc 2 g •?. « 10 H '«•i Jk--.a . Jt EWl r rlFi ■% • ' S v .’•. IpgSiflL ‘ fC ' - - -a. • r?- -- 5VS ■ .
