Kenney because of her untiring dedication to this school. In addition to being the head of the English department, she is involved in many activities: TRI-HI-Y, National Honor Society, and the Yearbook. It is with a great deal of pride that the staff of the 1968-69 Del Nord Ovest dedicates this book to her. 3 A yearbook is many things: it is a recollection of our thoughts, deeds, hopes, aspirations, successes, failures, good times and bad, friendships, arg- uments, and memories. A yearbook should be something more than just a reminder of our high school days, though. It should reflect part of the world that we lived in during our days spent at our Alma Mater. In the year 1969, a student was more aware of the world that he lived in than any generation of the past. The yearbook should reflect this awareness and the sense of involvement that the students shared in this period of their lives. Among the events that affected our generation, and perhaps generations to come were: The war in Viet Nam The racial strife between white and black Discontent with the government Assassinations of beloved individuals Student unrest and riots Inflation Threat of nuclear disaster Perhaps it can be argued that a yearbook is not the place to discuss the problems facing our world. I feel that it is fundamental that we remember what problems existed during our high school days:for twenty or thirty years from now we can look back on these troubled times and remember their importance. Maybe when our grandchildren graduate, these problems will have been Solved and the world will be a better, more peaceful place to live. William Lawrence Editor 1969 Del Nord Ovest lOOHJS HOIH hs dr ±NIOr Y.PdV NOK1 IV ime anc 1 fat e wi ili b ear jBp 6mpm6 Dear Friends: In 1979, or 1989, or—later-when you thumb through the pages of this Yearbook, ve know that you will enjoy remembering your school days. A great pleasure for us is to watch our pupils develop. After twelve years of ♦'school- ing, « you are now part of the adult world. You can and will accept your challenges and respon- sibilities courageously, confidently and, we hope, humbly. We are proud that we as teach- ers have had some part in your development. We trust that we have led you into meaningful ac- tivities both in and out of school. If ve have failed you, please forgive; if we have challen- ged you, push on and on. Remember, we will be watching you progress. Sincerely yours, Charles C. Gilbert Lee F. Davis Administrative Assistant Guy C. Conti Assistant Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1969 NORTHWESTERN HIGH SCHOOL ♦'Know the Difference ' There is a major difference between a mere desire to do a thing and a burning passion to do it—a determination to accomplish it at any cost. A mere desire is like warm water in a locomotive; it never will produce steam. It takes fire and force and enthusiam to gener- ate those traits which propel successful character. Darwin C. The golf team (now in its third year) went through the entire sea- son without a victory. Despite the setbacks that they suffered, the team had a lot of fun, and next year they expect to improve their record. Bill 119 The Girls' Athletic Association was active and victorious in both basketball and volleyball this year. They participated in the Erie County Basketball League and finished the season with a 5-4 record. A special thanks is given to Mrs. Truax for her help during this winning season. The volleyball team, coached by Miss Mershon, defended the Erie County Championship in a tournament held at Northwestern and Fairview High School. This has been the third consecutive year that Miss Mershon has led the team to victory. 120 Girls’ Athletic Association OFFICERS PRESIDENT............DEBRA LEICHT VICE-PRESIDENT.......JANICE MARCINOWSKI SECRETARY............PAT SCALISE TREASURER............SANDY SAWDY 121 Cheerleaders Varsity Squad included Jan Swaney (Captain), Shirley Bennett, Denese Knapp, Brenda Soltis, Myra Washnock, Beth Fratalia, Pat Huya, Pat Meerhoff.
