HISTORY Mr. Connor, Mr. Henderson, Mr. Howland, Mr. Yohman The social studies department attempts to give each student knowledge and experiences which will enable him to develop a sense of undying loyalty to the ideals of this country and an understanding of and an appreciation for the democratic way of life. HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION Mr. Lisek, Miss Smith, Mrs. O’Leary, Mr. Phillips. Health teachers are responsible for assisting the student to gain an intelligent under- standing of the human body and mind and for coupling with this knowledge a desire to achieve 14 the highest degree of physical and mental fitness.

Students are given the opportunity to take such courses as typewriting-, short- hand, bookkeeping, and office practice. FINE ARTS Mr. Tortorelli, Mrs. Crandall, Mr King The aim of the Fine Arts Department at Northwestern is to make music and art an integral part of school life. We attempt to fulfill this aim by providing musical activities and a well- rounded art program for the many and varied interests of our students. j,

MATHEMATICS Mr. Minch, Miss Klucinec. Miss Mershon, Miss Kingsley, Mrs. Stahlbaum. “Mathematics, the queen of the sciences,” sparks logical thought, problem solving ability, precision, and creativity. America’s future world position can be traced, as much as through progress in government and human science, in the parallel progress of her practical scientists and theoretical technicians — the mathematics students of today. LANGUAGE Miss Kenney, Miss Scalise, Mr. Horn, Mrs Sabol, Miss Paulson. The facility of speech and of writing is a treasure greatly to be desired. The poise and the self-confidence gained through speaking and writing experiences will enable each to take a responsible roll in community affairs as well as to enrich the individual’s personal and voca- ]5 tional life.
