1964 DEL NORD OVEST Presented By The Yearbook Staff of Northwestern High School Albion, Pennsylvania It is with pleasure and with affection that the staff of the 1963-1964 DEL-NORD-O’VEST dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Joseph Yohman. He has shown much enthusiasm and interest in the activities of his students. Not only has he been a good teacher, but also he has been a fine advisor for such groups as the Student Council and the Class of 1964. The first Homecoming of Northwestern was due largely to Mr. Yohman’s efforts. He gave students invaluable help as well as the guidance needed to make it a success. He is, indeed, worthy of any tri- bute given him. Thank you Mr. Yohman. 3 DEL NORD O’VEST STAFF OFFICERS Co-Editors Judy Ifft John Frombach Nancy Shauberger Secretary Alice Hazer Assistant Editor Kathy Holliday Business Manager Lynne Holliday 4 YEARBOOK STAFF Advertising: Martin Loftus (Chairman) Paul Mellon Bob Kovacs Paula Marshall Sports Tim O’Leary (Chairman) John Niemla Terry Sumner Vianne Loftus Subscriptions Sally Malena (Chairman) Linda Beil Becky Sherman Features Connie Walbridge (Chairman) Ann Mosher Sherry Williams Janet Ingold Club Activities Nancy Shauberger (Chairman) Joyce Rogers Becky Rausch Kathy Miller Seniors Toby Workman (Chairman) Judy Rogers Faculty Barbara Zemcik (Chairman) Patricia Holiday Art David White Underclassmen Alice Hazer Classes Linda Swaney Music John Frombach Tracy Sherman Karen Anderson 5 PRINCIPALS’ MESSAGES To the Graduates, Class of 1964: Congratulations upon your achievement. We are proud of each and every one of you. We hope for you a life of excitement and service; may it be also one of labor and love. As you think about your years in school, we might ask you, “What was important”? Was it the Prom, that football game with Girard; an assembly program? Or are the incidents that gave you satisfaction and that still make you proud the ones like the success that you had in completing' a difficult task like an alg'ebra problem, the conjugation of a verb in language, of the successful solution of a chemistry experiment? How about the time you were able to say a kind word to someone or the time that you were able to give encour- agement and praise to someone deeply discouraged. Remember, too, the thrill you had when you were a member of the team or of a group that had achieved unusual success. Just what was and is important in life? Is it only what we do, or is how we do it important, too? It has been our pleasure and privilege to have known you and to have worked with you. Come back to visit us when you can. Sincerely yours, Charles C. Gilbert Principal Mr. Darwin C. Cook Assistant Principal 6 Dr. Donald C. Thompson Supervising Principal Mr. Charles C. Gilbert High School Principal To the Graduates of the Class of 1964: Never in the history of mankind has the pace of progress of men’s knowledge been so rapid. Experts warn this rate of increase is accelerating at such a speed that the educated individual of today will be unlearned in many phases of life by the close of a single decade. Whether you enter your life vocation now or whether you enroll for higher levels of formal education, I urge you graduates who have mastered so well your challenge for today at Northwestern to continue to grow in the mental, the physical, the social, and the spiritual aspects of your personal- ities throughout all of your lives. May the Com- mencement of June, 1964 truly be a commencement for a new era of learning for you. Thank you for the happy, worthwhile years together. Come back home to Northwestern, often! Perhaps the contribution which is most appreciated by the students is the annual Christmas Dance held in the school gymnasium, not only for those students presently enrolled, but also for alumni and parents. The society presented an assembly in November to explain its purpose. Several cupcake sales were held in order that the “books be balanced.” Some of the Senior members have received college scholarships. Two very successful social events, dinner and a movie, were enjoyed by the members and their advisors. To climax the school year, twenty new members were inducted in an impressive ceremony for students and parents on April 17, 1964, in the high school auditorium. The officers for the year were: President, Martin Loftus; Vice-President, Joseph Chromik; Secretary-Treasurer, Bar- bara Zemcik; Chaplain, Rebecca Thompson, Emblem Interpreter, Barbara Barney; Advisors, Katherine C. CROSS COUNTRY CROSS COUNTRY Northwestern's latest addition in the sports field is the Cross Country team. Rug-g-ed endurance, strict training:, and strong: will power are essential factors for this individual sport. Comparable to track runners. Cross Country runners travel a course ranging from two miles to four miles at a demanding pace. A combination of woods, fields, dirt-roads, and cow paths make up the course which these athletes must travel to perfect their skills. Northwestern Cross Coun- try athletes placed fourth in the county standing this year; they will endeavor to better this record next year. N.H.S.
