HIGH ACTIVITIES IR. HI DANCING Once a week a group of jr. Hi students met with Miss Moody and learned how to dan- ce, and several styles of dancing. Not only did this club prove helpful but was also a source of enjoyment. IR. HI CHORUS An active jr. Hi Chorus was formed this year by Mr. Harps- ter. The chorus presented a sec- tion of the final spring concert. They sponsored several dances for their World Service money and also sent 2 representatives, Susan Barton and june Bishop, to the Model' U.N. held at Harrisburg. The Youth for Christ is one of the very active clubs at our school. Their club period is held on Mondays, but they hold rallies and Funspiration on Saturday nights. They also sponsored skating parties. They participate with neighboring schools in Bible Quiz Contests. They also have debate groups, The officers, under the leadership of Mrs. Stanton, are Doris Main, President, Bonnie Sherman, Vice- President, Patty Martin, Secretary, Linda Stanton, Quiz Captain, Pianist, Sandra Martin. STUDENT COUNCIL The Northwestern High Student Council was headed its first year by Duane Shiley as president, Gene O'Leary as Vice-President, Pat O'- Leary as Secretary, and Larry Valentine as Treasurer. They are a group which represents a student government with- in the school, and solved many prob- lems for our Students and Teachers. As a project this year, they worked toward bringing a foreign exchange student to the school. Members of the Council were present at the annual Convention held this .spring. wxnsnv N The Varsity N is a club con- sisting of Senior High Students who have earned a letter in some varsity activity or sport. The Club sponsored several dances and a midnight show to earn money for buying the eligible seniors their jackets. HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL These are the junior High School members of the S.C. They, as do the senior high members, represent their homerooms in presenting problems to the Council and act as messengers for the Council in their homerooms as they report the business brought up and discussed in their weekly meetings. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The object of this organization is to stimulate a desire to render ser- vice, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in pupils of Northwestern High School. President, Eugene O'Leary, Vice President, Daniel Miles, Secretary, Linda johnson, Treasurer, Dorothy Taylor, Faculty Advisor, Miss Ruth Kingsley. Only 10 per cent of the junior and 15 pet cent of the Senior classes are eligible for membership, and can- didates are required to have a B average scholastically with no F's in any subject. Members are selected by the faculty using the four criteria. NEWSPAPER CLUB The school newspaper, The Wild- cats Roar, was printed and sold twice a month. Included in this were many interesting and informative articles on sports, fashions, activities, and general school news. The advisor of the club was Mr. jones, Editor, Pat Podluzne, Co-Editor, Shirley Chromik, Secre- tary-Treasurer, Judy Chromik, and Ex- change, Barbara Chetoni. LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club is a service club. The members assist the students and teachers in using the library facilities. They work behind the desk, taking care of library permits from the stu- dent body, and help mend and ar- range books. The club had a bake sale, and a successful talent show in April. Future Homemakers of America club is just what the .title implies. It consists of girls who are t0morrow's homemakers. The purpose of the FHA is to pro- mote a growing appreciation for the joys and satisfaction of homemaking. ,The girls hold an annual induction in the fall, several girls attend the Farm Show and representatives are sent to the yearly convention at Penn State. AUTO CLUB The auto club is one of the newer clubs at Northwestern. The club studies different models of cars, motors, and reads a lot about the customizing of cars. The boys have a garage where they can work with cars. They have been greatly helped by local people. In the club's membership, there are only two girls. F.F.A. The Future Farmers is an edu- cational club closely connected with the vocational agricultural course. It is to develop leadership and further interest in farming. The club is active in the annual Albion Fair, and each year sends mem- bers to the Farm Show in Harrisburg. The boys also do much in audio-visual assistance in the surrounding community. RADIO CLUB The Radio Club is for boys in- terested in using ham-radios. The boys learned how to use the Morse Code. With the use of this code they can send and receive messages from a great distance. The boys learn the correct use of the radio including what the qualifications are and how you can get a license, The advisor of the club is Mr. Griffen and the officers are: Presi- dent, Mike Stichick, Vice-President, Bill Kinsey, Secretary-Treasurer, Paul Stichick. AVIATION CLUB The Aviation Club is open to all senior high boys interested in aero- nautics. These boys spent many club hours figuring out different flights, flight times, what to do under certain weather conditions, and many other of the interesting subjects about aeronautics and airplanes. Members of the club made several trips to Erie and Port Erie Airports where they observed many things which couldnlt be explained in the club period. FREN CH I French I is also a course for col- lege going students who need a modern language, ENGLISH Book reports and illustrations on these books were a mainpoint in Sophomore English. Of course grammar was a big part of the year as usual. SENIOR ENGLISH Senior English this year gave final touches to' grammar. Short stories were read and discussed and estimations of the authors were completed. IUNIOR ENGLISH Spelling of more intricate words and advanced grammar took up IDOSI of the junior English year. This course is divided into semesters, Solid Geometry the first semester, and Trigonometry the second, ALGEBRA I Learning the principles of ad- vanced math is part of the curri- culum offered at Northwestern. One of the classes specializing in this is the Algebra I Class. BOOKKEEPING Bookkeeping is a class taken by mainly commercial students who are interested in learning the art of keeping accounts and books straight. classic? y SENIOR MATH Senior Math is one of the prac- tical math courses that may be taken by 10th, 11th, 81 12th grade students. PHYSICS II Physics Il is an advanced study of electronics and specialization in the physical properties of matter. v Q5 EVENING PHYSICS This is another example of am- bitious students during a typical Physics II Bull Session. BIOLOGY Biology is the study of life, ani- mal and vegetable. Microscopes and dissecting kits are chief tools in this subject, CHEMISTRY Chemistry, the study of chemi- cal reactions is a well liked subject of many would-be scientists and academic students. WORLD HISTORY World History is a junior course where the history of civilization and the cultured background of different countries are studied. This course is given'to acquaint students with mis- takes of the past so that they may be avoided in the future. AMERICAN HISTORY American History, the sophomore history course, begins the basis of our own government and the growth of our country. The study of this sub- ject also introduces many new features including a study of our own state's past. P.O.D. P.O.D. is a required course for seniors in Problems of Democracy and the study of government. During the year, lectures were given on eco- nornics, insurance, and investments. METAL SHOP The boys in this elass learn valuable things about repair work with metal. In this class the boys have also made plates for the Drifters organization, as Well as doorknobs. WELDING To many of the boys who are plan- ning to be machinists, welding is a valuable Class. In an every clay work many of the things learned in this class are found to be useful. WOOD SHOP Many beautiful pieces of furniture are made in wood shop. The boys are taught how to finish wood and repair objects that are made of wood. SEWING of the courses offered in Economics is sewing. This the girls to be proficient in of making their own clothes repair the ones they already HOME EC. Preparing for a future role as homemaker, are the Home Economic students. Many of the girls who are taking this course are planning to be teachers of this subject. VA COOKING Another of the more specialized courses is cooking. This many times proves to be a valuable asset in later life for all the girls, both those who plan to be homemakers and those who will be teachers. AGRICULTURE This course is offered to boys who already live on a farm and plan to continue in this line of work and those who would like to enter it. PROJECT One of the requirements of the course is that each member plan a project. They must follow it through and report the results telling the success or failure of the project and why. FARMING The agriculture boys are taught many things about produce farming and dairy farming. The year is usually split up between learning the care of animals and the use of the ground. DRIVER TRAINING Driver Training Class, under the direction of Mr. Molsky, this year did many interesting things. Some of their field trips included going down town and observing the local traffic in an attempt to point out their mistakes. vw' ART One of the courses taken as a sideline for many is art. However, this does not mean that many who take this course are not seriously considering a career in the fields of art. TRAINING CAR The Driver Training car, a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Aire, was provided the school by Myers Chevrolet in Girard, Pennsylvania. Many of the students who learn to drive in this car are soon qualified to take their driver's examination. OFFICE PRACTICE In office Practice the students learn to use the machines used in the office. Many times these students actually do some of the work in the office. SI-IORTHAND II Shorthand II is also a class for those who plan to go on in the com- mercial field. In the class the students learn to take dictation at high speeds. TYPING II Typing II is a course for those who plan to go on in the commercial field. In this class the students learn to type dittos and use the ditto machine. BOOK KEEPING Bookkeeping, another Commercial subject. Bookkeeping students learn to balance books, keep ledgers and generally how to keep track of busi- ness transactions. BUSINESS ENGLISH Business English is a class where the commercial student learns to use the English he will need in every day business transactions. This is a great deal of help to them when it comes to getting a job. INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS Introduction to Business is a course for those Sophomores who think they might be interested in a Commercial course. It gives them a brief back- ground on all the Commercial sub- jects. SENIOR GIRLS HEALTH CLASS The senior girls' health class was taught by Mrs. O'Leary. This class was to further the girls, minds in the field in first aid. SENIOR BOYS HEALTH CLASS The boys, health class was taught by Mr. Kromer. The boys spent some time on first aid, and its application to every day emergencies. SENIOR GIRLS HEALTH CLASS The senior girls learned about first aid and how it enters into every- day life. Also how to handle them- selves in real emergencies. GYM The boys' gym class this year had a wide variety of sports to practice at. They also had many running events during the course of the year. BOYS GYM CLASS In gym Class this year the boys practiced mainly softball, baseball, and basketball. Their instructor was Coach Lisek.
