It has now been 20 years since the commencement of the class of 1950 became history, Happening down the street in Springboro oneday, whomshould I meet but the former THOHA MAE FULLER. She invited me to her home on Euclid Avenue! I gladly accepted because I felt she could inform me of the whereabouts of some of our former classmates. Thora Mae was not the bachelorwoman that I had expected, but rather I found that she had eloped with a prominent Sprlngboruresident and is now the proud mother of eleven children--the youngest of which are year-old twins. we sat in the living room and turned on the radio to relax, what was that cheering we heard coming overthe air? Did they mention a fa- mllim-name? Yes, there they repeated it, It wasALVIN HOTCHKISS, the star player of the Champion Springboro Indians of 1970. Alvishad just made a winning home run in the final World Series game. Didn't that announcer's voice sound familiar? Why it should! It was the famous DAN DAVENPORT, now sports reviewer for the Colombia Broadcasting System, That was he screaming his lungs out for our old school enum, Learning of these men's achievement in sports turned my mind back to the days when our team used to trim Conneautv1lle.Then I remembered how FAITH McFAYDEN soeagerly led us in cheers that helped to bring the victory. Now Faith is the capable Art and Physical Education teacher in thenew Conneaut Valley Junior-Senior High School with 1000 students of this area enrolled, I was not startled to hear that IRENE CALVIN and SHIRLEY JOHNSON are hzthe beauty business and have hung outtheir shingle, NThe Shlrene Beauty Shoppe,' on the main avenue of their fair city, Shirleymarrled young and led her husband such a wild life that he passed away a few years ago and now she, the poor widow, is looking for another man, As for Irene, well, she never found her Dream Prince and is still looking and hoping that someday he will appear. CLIFFORD McDOWELL graduated from Wheaton College, He now is a successful politician in the state legislature. I understand he is planning to run for governor this fall. The farmgirl of our class, MARY GREENE, changed her occupation to that of city life. She 1s now president of the Albro Packing Company, which has plants in seventeen states andthree foreign countries. Mary is now working on the 58th variety for the Heinz Company. The mechanic, HORTON RICE, is now the chief designer at the Ford Factory in Detroit. He is trying to perfect his latest model, a car that will have wheels for ground use and wings for flying. TED EATON can't seem to find the girl of his dreams so has hope- lessly applied for a ten year membership with the 0Bachelor's Associa- t1on'. He hopesby that time the field will be improved. In the mean- time, he is running an elevator in a large department store because he loves high altitudes. His last plane ride ended when he crashed while looking at the pin-up picture tacked up in the cockpit. I, EVELYN SNHTH, the writer of this bit of news have become the Assistant Editor for the Springboro Herald. Also I'm kept Quite busy with my program, 'Men, The Menace,' every Friday evening sponsored by the Nixle Scratchie Flea Powder for Dogs. rv-vvvyrv--vv-wiv--1-v,,. .-.. The sixth, seventh, and eighth grades opened thel9U9-50 school year with an enrollment of 39 pupils, and later three new students--Bill Cunningham, who came from West Mead School, Carolyn Bishop, from Platea, and George Boyle from Conneaut Lake--increased the number to b2. The grades made a project in health in which each child made a notebook on a nutritious diet. Several students from this room took leading parts in the Christmas Operetta, 'On Christmas H1ll,' presented for the P. T. O. on December 21, 1959. A Christmas party was held on December 23 featuring an exchange of gifts. On February 1U a Valentine box was enjoyed by the stu- dents. A number of the pupils have served faithfully on the school safety patrol. Ai, , we ,, J. A 5 4 A l .1 . ,- ,, , N ff ' '1- Effiiii-:I 'G W he ,.....-, .,,., ., 'f v i - .W . . ' Pl! The oupils of the first and second grade room have been made very henry this year by the purchase of twenty six new desks. These take the place of the small tables which have been used for some time. Now each child has a place for his own hooks, nencils, crayons, and workbooks. The desks are movable so that several children can work together if it is desirable. We began the year with 37 pupils. Two were added to our number when Donald Eyerley from Spring Township, and Richard Harry from Sumnerhlll Township were enrolled. Since Christmas, however, Jane Gehrlnger moved to Pittsburgh and Richard Harry moved to Meadvllle. Twelve of our children took the part of the Orphanage Babies ln the Christmas operetta. The other children in the room out on a play entitled 'The Christmas Fairyu on the afternoon before Christmas vacation. Seventeen mothers and ten little brothers and sisters attended. . in-,.-7 jk., -f-'-'ffw ff-v 7 lf ' V f i v -up .. ' 4 1,74 V H5211 A ,.. The Springboro Falcons started the year with a bang by winning the first game of the season over Townville 32-13. During regular season's play, they won 13 and lost 8. In all games, however, the boys played four quarters of good basketball. The team was led in offensive playing by sophomore Bob Chedb Carr with 252 points and Dale Boyce, a Junior, with 212 points. Sprlngboro was qualified to enter the Crawford County Class C tournament by holding second place in the western division. Our opponent, Saegertown, took an early lead and atthe half the score stood 22-lb. As the game progressed Spring- boro was able to narrow the margin and finally capture the lead,3b-33. There was a minute and a half remaining ln the game. A Saegertown player took a rebound and his shot went through the hoop making the score 35-BU. The Sprlngboro boys fought back and with seven seconds left Captain Horton Rice called time. However, there were not enough seconds remaining. As the final horn sounded, a Saegertown player was fouled. His free throw was good and the game ended 36-BU, Saegertown. Theee girls, clad in their blue skirts and white blouses with sparkling eequined let- ters, could be eeen at each game, bcestlnv end cheering the team on to victory. The three girls cn the right are Clarlnda Scott, and Jean Shuler, freshmen and Caryl Stevens from the eighth grade. They wear the blue and gold of their Jayvee team. Theee zirle have tried their hand at cheerinz for the first time ee a threesome, ani have proved capable ef leading many fine cheers. Both of theee zrour: have given much time and effort in leading the fans in cheers at all the games. They also con- ducted nep meetings nearly every Friday. Textile experts have made rayon do many entirely new and different things. They fitted it to constructions particularly suitable for warmth. To increase its adap- tability they even went so far as to re- arrange the basic molecular structure of rayon. The fruits of these labors are now avail- able. Right now you can buy handsome year-round rayon suits for both men and women, attractive all-weather sport togs, soft, luxurious blankets.
