f .guru LQ a 1 agmoncl me The basic three R's, readin', 'ritin', and 'rithmetic, expanded at Northwestern to include three more, our new principal, Raymond R. Reed. Mr. Reed has initi- ated many firsts at Northwestern and proven himself an advisor and friend to all. Born in Fairfield, Nebraska, Mr. Reed is the son of a Methodist minister. It seems he, too, is going through life with a song in his heart. Wfhile attending Stanton High School, he won the Clarinet Solo Award in state competition, and then entered Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, as a music major. It was here that Mr. Reed roomed with movie star, Robert Taylor. By directing a local school band, he was able to complete college and upon graduating, conduct his college symphony orchestra and band. Swinging along with his musical talent, Mr. Reed taught high school in Lincoln, Nebraska, leading the band to victory in various competitions. Mr. Reed then conducted the orchestra at the University of Nebraska before moving on to Chicago and a part-time job with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Reed also played with Sammy Kaye's Band at the Edgewater Beach Hotel. After serving as a Captain on an LST during World War ll, Mr. Reed returned to education as the Supervisor of Music for Arlington schools, then as- sistant principal of George-Mason junior Senior High. After becoming principal of Northwestern, Mr. Reed has contrbuted a great deal to the school. It is our hope that he will swing along with Northwestern for a long time.
