SOCIAL STUDIES Helping students to understand the past and pres- ent and to cope with the future is the basis of the social studies program. Gaining knowledge of the primitive civilizations and today's societies is the goal of the sophomores in their study of world history. United States his- tory is more fully explored by the juniors, giving them a firm foundation for a review of international situations in their examination of the problems of democracy when they are seniors. Analyzing solu- tions of past problems, POD students apply these findings to the present and future. Psychology classes delve into man's more personal problems and behavior. These classes combine their efforts in various ways to make the student body aware of the importance of participation. In the fall a mock election was staged by the POD classes, complete with campaign posters, registration, rallies, and speeches. Some of the classes made visits to the embassies and throughout the year guest speakers were invited to supplement the regular course of study. As they gather information received from these classes and activities, students prepare themselves for responsible citizenship in a functioning democracy. 'I'limugl1 fbi' Sue:-says N.
