We are faced with decisions, any one of which may be the paramount one of our life. We can- not stand shaking in the rush of life, we must stride forward, or we remain forever, on the out- side looking in. lt is frustration to peer through a cloudy window. Education helps to clear that window . . . we may see the day and act without fear. Education helps us to know that we are capable of facing our life hoppily. To know our minds and to know ourselves so that we may march confidently with the people of our time, Dramatics and speech students practice their ports for one of the weekly programs presented on radio station WINX. Goethe How appropriate these words of Goethe may seem to many! They bring to mind a duel, with conjugations, translations, and verb plans pitting their strategy against the poor student, But as the year progresses, determination brings ability, and with ability comes confidence. Con- fusion is replaced by assurance and by love for and interest in what has become the student's next-to- native tongue. And after two years, he finds that it really isn't impossible parler francais, habler espanol or dicere latin, and he has won the duel. The first lock was broken by elementary learning, the second by secondary education, the third lock is yet to be broken, for that is the locked window of the world. As the second lock is broken and the window thrown open, they stand fast and let the guardians of the third window pass judgment. The third graduating class of Northwestern has broken the second lock, but only with the tool of education. v M' T WP , Qplyjfvpbflxi My 5 Ui Xvgfw Wfofwg J! yy JJ! 1 o o fl o of oo o Uffioors of tho Sooior Class Sponsor ood Co-sponsors ABDILL, HERBERT WESLEY, Herbie , academic, Hi- Y, homeroom secretary, ambition-aeronautical engi- neer. Erasmus A colorful stained glass window is composed of many parts, each fitting into its own place. A school with interest for everyone has many activities, each fitting into the window of school life, each contribut- ing a bit of color to the entire picture. From honor societies to service organizations, from social clubs to special interest groups - there is op- portunity for everyone at Northwestern to find a place for himself among fellow students. Each activity, each little piece of glass, helps to inform the community of the school life of today and of the citizens of tomorrow. One ofthe highest honors than can be bestowed upon a student is to become a member of the National Honor Society. It acquaints the par- ents with their chiId's school and teachers, and gives the teachers on opportunity to know their students' parents and to discuss the stu- dent with them. But our Parent-Teacher's Association has also been of great assistance to the school in a material way. This year they sponsored the annual Jamboree, purchased some new instru- ments for the band and new equipment for the physical education department. They also ob- tained a new sixteen milimeter camera and equipment for the school. Parent-Teacher's Association officers for the year were, Mr. Robert Dove, president, Mr. Lloyd B. MacEwen, treasurer, Mrs. Paul E. Nystrom, recording secretary, Miss Clara Bricker, corresponding secretary, and Mr. John P. Speicher, School representative and prin- cipal of Northwestern. fm' 'V 'fm' QZFN j ,W-fee-0 Major Chester E. Whiting and the United States Army Field band have presented tive concerts to the student body ot Northwestern. The soloists caused many a girl's heart to jump. The chorus presented a fine repertoire at each per- formance. Precision plus are the words tor the drummer's routine, and the band showed that it was the Million Dollar Band . Major Whiting and the band deserve a North- western blue and white salute for the time spent in bringing fine music to our school. Major Chester E. Whiting, Commanding Officer. The United States rm Field Band Since the opening ot the school, Northwesternites have looked forward to the annual concerts of the Army Field Band under the direction of Major Chester E. Each year a script is written which revolves around a theme. ln l952, the theme was Famous Stars , in l953, Call Back Later , a story about a theatrical agent, in 1954, Beach Liberty , a tale of sailors on leave. ln the above picture students are rehearsing for the i954 Music Revue. Troy Hi-Y H t Through the windows you have just seen, you have had an opportunity to gaze upon the many activities which go into making the student life of Northwestern. We are proud to have had a part in opening these win- dows for you. Through them you have seen the things which have helped us to grow and to develop into early adulthood. We at Northwestern feel that it is the responsibility and the obligation of the sophomores and the juniors to continue to present the same wholesome pictures of Northwestern. Seniors have played their role in helping to get our school started and, in three short years, to have it recognized as one of the outstanding high schools in our land. For us these Windows of Northwestern will never close . . . they will constantly serve to remind us of the hope and the faith and the trust which have been placed in us. Now as we enter into a more stern life, we ourselves become windows by which Northwestern will be judged. lt is our fervent hope and prayer that our lives will continue to be dominated by the spirit of fellowship and the act of service to others.
