Girls' Basketball Determination Characterizes Initial Girls Team In their premiere season of high school basketball, the Lady Trojans showed tremendous amounts of ability, stamina, and determination. Although the team's season was a losing one, practically every game concluded with the Northwestern girls as the underdogs by only two or three baskets. Led by tenacious defensive player and team quar- terback Rosalyn Jennings at guard and senior co-captain Martha Sue Hope, the Trojans' only fault seemed to be inex- perience, and this was greatly overshadowed by their 100W dedication to NWHS. Margaret Moore, Sally Herlong, Rebecca Myers, and Kathy Hoskins were invaluable to the team, and with Herlong, Jennings, and Hoskins returning next year the prospects for 75-76 appear very promising. J.V. Basketball J .V.'s Demonstrate the Pride of True Trojans 'Qs-W The baby Trojans won their first three games of the season against Butler ttwicel and Fort Mill, before drop- ping a heartbreaker to Chesterfield 43-39. Paced by the rebounding of Mark Collum and Ricky Norwood, the ball handling of Jay Grantham and Doug Sumwalt, and the all round play of Leland Greeley, the Trojans bounced back with devastating victories over Gaffney, Winnsboro, Un- ion, and Fort Mill. In a particularly exciting game against Chesterfield, the baby Trojans avenged an earlier loss as Sammy Pratt swished a twenty footer from the corner at the final buzzer. Lancaster won the baby Trojans' next match. The Trojans came back the following game to beat the Bearcats of Rock Hill High. In another close contest, the Trojans defeated Chester in overtime. Pressure foul shooting paid offas the Trojans only won by a single point. ln their next two encounters, the baby Trojans were dis- appointed falling to Winnsboro and Gaffney in close con- tests. The Trojans promptly romped the Union Yellow Jackets in their next game by a score of 73-40. Against Rock Hill High, the Trojans lost a thriller. The game went down to the last, with the final score 33-31. In overtime the Baby Trojansjust couldn't hang on as they fell to Lancas- ter, 36-34. ln their final game of the season, the young Trojans rallied and blew the Cyclones from Chester out of the gym by a score of 52-34. Coach Sumwalt feels that his team has matured greatly over the season and may become some of the greatest future Trojans Northwestern has ever seen. Page One Hundred and Thirty E?-:Sy 'Si x L2 Q
