Varsity Basketball Trojans Win Region Regular Season Title The Mighty Trojans began their season with a bang, defeat- ing a much taller Butler team, 65-58. In his initial varsity competition, junior Dewey Bowen stepped in to take the place of the seniors of 1974, playing scrappy under the goal and out-jumping his taller opponents. Senior Rick Sanford, who also played an excellent game, led the scoring with thirty points. On their return visit, the Trojans had an offnight, only pulling down a total of twenty rebounds. Although their shooting percentage was high, at the final buzzer the scoreboard declared the Butler Tigers victorious by a score of 91-70. Northwestern had another off night against Fort Mill. The Trojans, forced to take outside shots and troubled on re- bounding, met their second defeat of the season 68-62. The tide turned at Chesterfield, although late in the game. Sophomore Gary Walton saw action for the first time, as he was drafted from the JV team. Defense was the key to the victory as the Trojans only allowed the Rams two points in the first quarter. The final score: 44-38. The Trojans entered conference play with an impressive win over Gaffney, 62-48. The depth of the Trojans was re- vealed for the first time, as Coach Moody emptied his bench the fourth quarter. Ben Fortson, Herman Johns and Tim Cooper contributed their share to the victory and gained valuable experience. Traveling to Winnsboro proved disasterous to the Trojans as they lost their first conference game, 55-58. Marvin Craw- ford and Jim Kiser made some key steals in the closing minutes of the game but the Trojans failed to turn them into points. Defense kept the Trojans within reach, but the time ran out. Again, sticky defense was the key to the victory over Union 41-38.
