Girls' Volleyball Volleyball Team Spikes To A Successful Season .. ,far A Participating in its initial year as a varsity sport, Northwestern's vol- leyball team posted an impressive re- cord of 12-7. Advancing to the semi- finals of the regional tournament, the Trojans fell to a strong and aggressive team from Chapin. The Trojans, coached by Laura Powell, dropped their first two matches to Mt. Pisgah and Lugoff- Elgin. They then defeated Camden, Andrew Jackson, and Rock Hill High. In their next encounter, the Trojans again fell to Mt. Pisgah after a three game match. The Trojans won three more matches before losing a heart breaker to Lugoff-Elgin, by a score of I4-16, 15-ll, and 16-18. Cited for their outstanding play were Judy Hinebaugh, Martha Sue Hope, Kathy Hoskins, Margaret Moore, Rebecca Myers, Glenda Simiril, and Anita Templeton. Boys' Tennis orthwestern Netmen Eighth In State With a 9-5 season record, the Northwestern boys' tennis team ended their season eighth in the state, losing only to Spartanburg, Lancaster, and Fort Mill. The Trojan netmen also carried away honors at the Northwestern Invitational Tennis tournament. Number one player Saul 0'Conner led the team, being undefeated in the regular season. At the state tournament in Columbia, Lee Ayers and Huey Smith advanced to the doubles semi-finals while O'Conner reached the semi-tinals before being defeated.
