Track KISER, WHITE SCHWARTZ: Cited Most Outstanding In Major Meets Inspired by Region Ill AAAA COACH OF THE YEAR, Bob Jenkins, the 1973-74 track team achieved their goal as they won a second state champ- ionship for Northwestern. Hard work and the will to win paid off as the thinclads defeated every team they met. Highlights of the year in- cluded victories over Spartanburg, Lan- caster, T. L. Hanna, Orangeburg- Wilkinson and Rock Hill High. The Tro- jans also won eight other major meets. David White, Johnny Schwartz, and Jimmy Kiser won Most Outstanding Athletes at the News-Piedmont Relays, Cavalier Relays and the Buccaneer Re- lays respectively. Other team victories were: Trojan Relays Champions, State Record Relay Champions, Region Ill AAAA Meet Champions, Upper State AAAA Meet Champions, and State AAAA Meet Champions. Trojan Baseball - ' ' Led by the powerful bat of the most outstanding player Mark Sumwalt and the consistent hurling of pitchers Jeff Austin and Ronnie Hargett, the Trojan baseball team won the Eastern Division of Region III with an 8-1 record. The Trojans had a successful season as they captured the title at the first Annual Lancaster Invitation Baseball Tournament. where Jeff Austin was declared Most Valuable Player. Highlighting the season was a suspense-filled contest pit- ting the Trojans against the Rock Hill Bearcats. The out- come determined which team would meet Union inthe Reg- ion playoffs. Northwestern squeaked out on top by a score of 11-10. but their aspirations for a state championship were soon crushed by a strong Union team that eventually cap- tured the state title for itself. Despite this, the Trojans, under the guidance of coaches John Daurity and Ed Thompson, concluded the season with an exceedingly respectable 13-14 record and high hopes for the 1975 season.
