English Expand Horizons Mrs. Sue Goering was department head and Mrs. Patricia Slaboda was welcomed as a new teacher to the staff. Other teachers working in the department included Mrs. Grindstaff, Mr. Reed, Mr. Marshall, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Stubbs, Mr. Naggy, Mr. Riley, Mrs. Markon and Mrs. Birkholtz. There was a wide range of course listings from the basic one to the more advanced courses. No matter what kind of course, they all strive to improve reading and writing skills. The following course offerings are a few of the many which are challenging to English students: Practical Writing, Independent Reading, Modern Books, Journalism, Successful Writing, and Plays. Also offered in the English curriculum for students who are able to accept more responsibilities and challenges are courses such as Advanced Composition, Pre-College Reading, Americans on America and Harlem Renaissance. At the end of the year, each English teacher submitted a list of names of those graduating seniors whom they felt did exceptionably well in their classes. The teachers caucaused and narrowed this list to only four names of seniors to be presented at a luncheon honoring their outstanding achievement in English here at Northwestern. Students, parents, counselors and teachers were in attendance making this special event one of the most memorable experiences ever for these outstanding and dedicated English students. Last year's honored seniors were Terry Powell, Colleen LaRowe, Juanita Aguilar, and Monique Hayden.
