The National Honor Society has the long time reputation of being one of the most respected organization existing at Northwestern High School. Its purpose is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to serve, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in other students. Membership depends upon four things: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The National Honor Society met weekly to discuss and plan many service related projects within the community and school. These included giving a Christmas party for the St. Joseph Hospital Pediatrics wing, preparing Christmas food baskets, and having a tag day for Muscular Dystrophy. For their trip members journeyed to New York The Big Apple for a Memorial Day weekend adventure. Advising the students through all these activities were their sponsors Mrs. Ida Mumford, Mrs. Sue Goering, and Mr. Willie Donahue.
