Lionel Powell and Vernita Marsh made highest scores on Michigan Math Test. Mathematics is one of four subjects that is required for at least one year at Northwestern. Before graduation, all students will have had some form of math, whether it be general math. basic math, or college preparatory math. Ms. Judy Lewis, math chairperson, welcomed three new math instructors to the department. They are Mrs. Gloria Colen, Mr. John Kohlkepp and Mrs. Virginia Ricky. Mrs. Coughlin, Miss Pauline, Mrs. Colen and Mr. Kohlkepp jointly wrote the text for the math course, Math Applications , which was used in our math classes this year. To better serve our students, some of our teachers attended the Genesee Area Council of Math Teachers' Workshop to brush up on new math techniques. Approximately twenty Northwestern students attended the Math Specialty Program at Northern High School to take Advanced Functions. This year. the Math Field Day was held in March in which five Northwestern students competed against twenty teams throughout the county. In order to stimulate more interest in math, a math club has been formed here at Northwestern. 9
