Three years later it became an accredited Bible College, Today Northwestern offers training in a variety of disciplines and remains true to its original purpose. One man who played a prominent role in the growth of Northwestern is Dr. William B. Berntsen. He has devoted his life to the training of Christian young people, first as a teacher, and then as president of the college. Even through times of struggle and seemingly impossible situations, President R fought to keep the vision alive. Today the school we know as Northwestern College ex¬ ists largely because of the faith and persistence of this man. In December of 1984, Dr. Berntsen resigned from the presidency after 18 years of service and was appointed to the office of chancellor. As a symbol of our apprecia¬ tion for everything he has done, we dedicate the 1985 Scroll to our beloved Mr. B.” As students at Northwestern College, we are part of the continuing legacy. We have set aside this part of our lives for a time of concentrated learning and training. Our education serves a two-fold purpose. First, it is to help us to mature and become responsible as members of Cod ' s family. Se¬ cond, it is to prepare us to become a positive in¬ fluence on our world. However, even in the environment of a Chris¬ tian college, growth is a matter of choice. How much we learn is determined by how teachable we are. Similarly, the extent to which we affect our community is determined by the amount of effort we invest. May we be good stewards of our educa¬ tion and training by making them a part of our lifestyles. • 1, Stephen Opoku fellows along in his book during a lecture ■ 2. This year ' s team, led by captains Kevin Burns, David Quebodeaux and Jim Spock, proved to be a very enthusiastic squad. Encouragement among the players proved to be a big part in the team s successful season, with twins Wayne and Jim Straub providing the greatest amount of it. The Eagles started the season with a vic¬ tory over Augsburg and went on to win 7 out of their 9 season games, (the second best record in the 12 years of NWC Foot¬ ball.) Their biggest defeat was handed to them by Lomas College, and their biggest victory was the upset of Pills!jury with a score of 53-0, Northwestern finished the season with an unblemished 6-0 conference record, and clinched the Upper Midwest Con¬ ference Championship by defeating a pesky Ml. Senario team 23-2 1 tooth, ill 21 Team Makes a Name Virtually unknown until this fall. North- western ' s soccer team finally made a name for itself nationally. They ranked third in the nation with an 11-3 record and were awarded All-American Honors, Bill Schobrich, Tim Monlzka and Lee Nyquist also received All-District and All- Conference honors. With a majority of the team members returning next year, Coach Bill Crawford can expect another successful season. Although studying was a big part of life at North¬ western, contrary to popular belief, students did do more than just study. Topping the list of spare time activities was spending time with friends and eating. However, more constructive activities, such as jobs, inter-collegiate and intramural sports, organizations, growth groups and involvement in local churches, also oc¬ cupied student ' s time. k Tr- ' M m vn -1 fry i l? i, i 2ti College Lite £ I ■ 1. The tafents and acts of the singers were also varied. Brown Bannister, although mellow and spiritual had his otherwise interesting points such as tripping over a microphone cord. He also sang a lullaby to the newest addition to the Wendler family, a baby girl. Truth, much like Brown Bannister, was interesting in that its songs were varied from soft spiritual to hard Christian con¬ temporary. Bill Greenwood sang his songs by himself with no backup except for his personal accompaniment of piano or a very interesting guitar. He also imitated some TV shows like Leave it to Beaver and Star Trek in his own unique fashion. Steve Archer was probably the singer that the students of Northwestern enjoyed the most. His sidekick really added to the show with his excellent ability to play the synthesizer and keyboard. Steve was very funny with his many facial expressions and jokes and he also had a very good spiritual message. At one point he sang a duet with one of the student body ' s favorite singers, Julie Ann Beckman. Concerts 3 } 32 Music Man The Music Man, a popular musical by Meredith Wilson, proved to be a suc¬ cessful production for Northwestern College this year. Performed on two consecutive weekends in November, the play was directed by Carol Thomas-Johnson, assisted by music director Bryan Dobson The story, set in River City, Iowa, tells about Harold Hill, a dishonest salesman falling in love with the town ' s librarian, Marian Paroo, Brian Goldenman and Rachel Silrum brought the leading roles to life, along with a cast of approximate¬ ly 45. At the banquets, quartets of carolers wore costumes representing different eras in history, and sang a variety of Christmas carols. The highlight of this year ' s gala, however, was the presentation of the Christmas concert, “In the Fullness of Time ' The dynamic concert was performed three nights, two of which were completely sold out. Its huge success was made possible through the collabora¬ tion of almost 200 persons involved. The Concert Choir, Male Chorus, and Chorale were accompanied by a full orchestra, with the decorations and handbell choir adding a special touch in helping to create the Christmas mood- Spiritual Life Other college students might have wrinkled their noses at the idea of forced spirituality, and we too may have sometimes wondered if chapels were more boring than blessing, but spiritual life at NWC was much deeper. Chapels allowed students to voluntarily participate in planning, musical perfor¬ mance, and sharing. Spiritual activities on campus also included student-initiated groups such as Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Sing and Share, Growth Groups, and weekly prayer groups. Many students volunteered their time and energy to Christian service activities. ■ T. Cory Siern, Julie Strand and Chuck Knutson pro¬ vide special music in chapel, ■ 2. At times the lack of wrestlers hindered the team ' s performance as a whole, but each wrestler tried to per¬ form at his peak The Eagles participated in several tournaments this season as well. The Rochester Open proved to be a highlight performance for Mark Fugleberg. He won 5-2 against an oppo¬ nent who weighed well over 250 lbs. At our own Northwestern Invitational Sam Taylor, captain of this year ' s team, had a good showing by finishing 2nd in his class. Besides the vigorous practices three to four times a week, [he girls held fundraisers, sent notes of en¬ couragement, led devotions, and organized parties for their team members, In turn, the coaches and players were very appreciative of their enthusiasm and the dedication they showed throughout the year. The cheerleaders ' theme verse was I Thess. 5:11: Therefore encourage one another and build up one another . .Tami Parker, the football cheerleading captain said, ”1 think one of the greatest things about cheerleading at Northwestern is the closeness. It is hard to blend with so many dif¬ ferent personalities, and it is neat to see how everything comes together when we put ourselves aside, really care about others, and put Cod first. 44 Cheerleaders Cheerleaders 45 ■ 1, Football Cheerleaders! However, with this year being an election year, it was crucial that students be informed. Senior Lisa Nagell saw this need and formed an organization that did just that - kept the student body aware. Their major task consisted of monitoring the news and, specifically, the presidential campaign. They put c ards on cafeteria tables that contained timely information and registered approximately 300 people to vote. ■ 1. Eagle editor Martin Brown in¬ troduced major changes in the school newspaper. Instead of using last year ' s ver¬ sion of a larger and longer paper, he aimed to produce shorter issues more often, keeping the news more current. The main emphasis was on hard news stories, featuring many national articles and cartoons from the College Press Service. ■ 1 Joy Swanson works busily on the Phoiotypeset- ter ■ 2. Usually the choir takes only a couple of weekend tours, so this year ' s tour was a special event. The 54-voice choir began the year with a retreat to get to know each other and begin practicing. In November they per¬ formed in a special Fine Arts concert with choirs from three other colleges. In celebration of Bach ' s 300th birthday, they sang a motet in chapel.
