r . . . also growing, and causing oth¬ ers to grow. Northwestern strives to educate the whole person ; academi¬ cally, physically, spiritually, and so¬ cially. These dimensions of a stu¬ dent ' s life are developed and inte¬ grated to transform him into a trained and equipped servant of the Lord. Northwestern ... Though most students won ' t call themselves serious bookworms, their underlying goal to pursue wis¬ dom can be seen at all hours. Wheth¬ er it ' s a midnight cram session, a late night popcorn-typing confer¬ ence. or an afternoon in the library , students gain wisdom by doing their best with the Lord ' s gifts. Much work has been done this Learning ... past year to insure that students of the future continue to receive qual¬ ity education while retaining the Christian perspective. The addition of Maranatha Hall has provided ex¬ tra classroom space and better fa¬ cilities for music and drama , Other advances have been made in the curriculum , with the prospect of program revisions and additions. Reaching What does it mean to increase in stature? It means to grow and devel¬ op one ' s physical abilities, It means to discipline one ' s body. It means hard work. Growth means sacrifice and even a little bit of pain t but every Chris¬ tian must remember to whom his body belongs. rr Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your owm you were bought at a price. There¬ fore honor God with your body ' (I Corinthians 6:19-20) Becoming imitate Hint it is not an easy chal¬ lenge v but it is the best challenge. Are you willing to pay the cost of becoming more like Christ? It may mean a great deal of sacrifice and even times of painful growth. It is my prayer that you will accept that challenge and use it as a measuring rod for your spiritual walk . Remem¬ ber we are always becoming. The question is simply, what do you want ft? become? — Dave Jensen, NWSA president September 1981 ' Why the title ' Becoming ' ? That answer, my friend, is simple. I hope to address the greatest issue that each one of us faces in the year ahead: to become more like Christ. You see, each one of us is a becomer. We are always becoming something. We may be becoming more intelli¬ gent, more apathetic more con¬ formed to the standard of this world, but we are becoming : If we tvanf ft? become more like Him, then we must spend quality time with Him. We must fix our eyes on Hini so carefully that we begin to 10 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son , that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined, he also calledthose he called f he also justi¬ fied; those he justified, he also glori¬ fied(Romans 8.-29-30) ... more like Christ II That’s what life in the body of Christ is all about: people helping others to become more like Christ. By sharing in fellowship with other Christians, students grow and ma¬ ture in their own lives, experiencing the blessings that result from follow¬ ing Christ’s command to love one People ... another. Opportunities for this kind of sharing are abundant. Whether talk¬ ing and praying with a roommate, attending Sing and Share t or partici¬ pating in various organizations and activities, Christ’s love is shared and fife is enriched. ri A it) K n 12 ntifii. 4 nttui.itanr 3 sir Now the body is not made up of one part but of many If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part re¬ joices with it. Now you are the body of Christ , and each one of you is part of it. (ICos inthians 12:14,26-27) 13 Allen ' s Cure For Depression The Causes and Cures of Colle¬ giate Depression ' Discipleship in Dating ' and Rock, Stock , and Bar¬ rel were just a few of the titles of Tom Allen ' s seminars during Spiritu¬ al Emphasis Week r Allen urged students and faculty to allow Christ complete control in various areas of their lives , including depression, dat ing t and music , Dur¬ ing the week, many students made decisions to give Christ total lord- ship of their lives Packed-out evening seminars gave students practical guidelines for spiritual growth , Many went to Tom for private counseling , Allen , pastor of Pulpit Ministries at Seven Oaks Alliance Church in British Columbia and a well-traveled evangelist, said that a change oc¬ curred in his own life during the week ; felt the Lord leading me to concentrate more on college minis¬ tries i . The importance of prayer and a per tonal relationship with Chrltt was emphasized by Allen. 2 Freshman Connie Heikes consults Mr. Alien after a morning meeting. 3. A place where the Northwest¬ ern family could come together dai¬ ly to worship God through the minis¬ try of speakers, music, testimonies and prayer. We got used to planning our schedules around the two chapel sessions necessary to fit our grow¬ ing student body. The festivi¬ ties , including a concert by Renais¬ sance, a talent show, and a powder puff football game all started with the annual banquet. Coronation differed from the pre¬ vious years by a change in setting. A trumpet herald opened the ceremo¬ ny as the candidates for Miss North¬ western were escorted down the candle-fit aisle of Nazareth Chapel. After the escorts introduced the candidates ; Dr Ericksen announced the students choice — Kama John¬ son, Miss Northwestern 1981. Another Northwestern First Down Fan support played an important role In this year ' s football season. At every home game, one could hear the crowd chanting along with an¬ nouncer Dave Halstengard, And it f s another Northwestern first downl The team began with a slow start with 23 of 50 new to the squad. Sen¬ ior players Jeff Terhark, Greg Mad- son, Mark Wynthein, and Ken Faffler led the Eagles on to post a 5-3-1 re¬ cordl The mighty Eagles finished the season by defeating the previously 22 Football unbeaten Concordia St. Paul team, which placed the two teams in a tie for the TRCC, Upper Midwest Con¬ ference Championship title. Striving Together — In Everything To a Northwestern soccer player, working as a team off the field is as vital as working as a team on the field. This year tight teamwork led the team to District finals in the sixth year of the sport ' s existence at Northwestern College, Directed by Coach Dave Olson, the Eagles ended the season with a 10-7 record, A like Gunderson and Doug Gul- branson co captained this year ' s team . HH We had a lot of potential in spite of being a young team,” said junior Garry Lloyd, although at times we had trouble playing up to it” The team had its share of prob¬ lems, but as Peter Reid pointed out r We always seemed to be able to sit down, talk them out, and pray about them. The fans only see one-fourth of what the team really is. With only two return¬ ing team members , the 19SI Eagle runners worked hard to expand the Dynasty tradition at NWC. Doug Huffman led the pack by placing second at the Conference meet Tom Conklin finished fourth. Gene Westberg fifth, and Brad Gab- bert sixth. Hockey 59 Concert Band i i The Northwestern Band worked hard preparing to minister to six¬ teen audiences during the 1981-82 school year. Director Doc 0 (Da¬ vid Osterlund) demanded high qual¬ ity performance and stressed spiri¬ tual priorities. Spring tour highlight¬ ed the year with concerts scattered throughout northern Minnesota, Winnepeg, South Dakota, southern Minnesota and the homecoming concert in downtown Minneapolis. Throughout the year prayer and devotions were a vital part of re¬ hearsals. These habits became an important and memorable part of tour. If a member was sick , or ner¬ vous about a solo, or perhaps had family members in the audience t the band prayed together about the need. God unified the band through prayer concerns, said one member. The theme f God ' s Love was effec¬ tively portrayed to the audiences because they His love in action within their own group. The ministry with local churches included churches within a radius of 200 miles. This year the Chorus went to Northern Iowa and southwest Min¬ nesota. Spring Break Tour included programs each night and two week¬ ends to Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois. The tour included 14 pro¬ grams in 10 days to churches and Christian High Schools. Under the direction of Cheryl Henry , the Women ' s Vocal and Handbell Ensemble worked diligent¬ ly in order to perform their best for the Lord. The daily rehearsals were packed with hard work, devotions , praise and prayer f drawing them closer to the Lord and each other . Two weekend retreats gave the women a chance to get to know each other by sharing and ministering to one another , playing games r partici¬ pating in sports, and of course work¬ ing on music . Spring break and weekend tours gave the women a chance to share music and testimony with audiences throughout Minnesota , Nebraska, and South Dakota. Loving host fam¬ ilies, sightseeing in God ' s Country, and just being together made this year unforgettable.
