A necessity Tot each par¬ ticipant in any sport is to reach his or her capacity. This may mean going be¬ yond the expected and reaching for what was thought to be “the unat¬ tainable To achieve “the unattain¬ able” there must be physical and men¬ tal preparation. Mental preparation in¬ volves confidence that the job can be done, and done well. Being prepared mentaly also means having the assur¬ ance that the other teammates are out to do their best; playing the game right; and then, being satisfied with the outcome. Physical preparation is hav¬ ing the body tuned so that it can re¬ spond the way it should to each de¬ mand of the game. With every person bringing these attitudes and this pre¬ paration to the team, the result is a well-rounded efficient team. At North¬ western a collaboration of these indi¬ vidual efforts is a quality that charac¬ terized this year ' s football team. Good leadership from captains Scott Wall- burg and Mark Gronski guided the men towards working smoothly together. At times, different men stood out from the rest of the team while making exceptional plays. This was the fruits of individuals cooperating with other individuals to attain a common goal— winning the game. 120 I r V H 1 0 f V j Uu W L j GIRL’S VOLLEYBALL FRONT ROW: (Left to right) Bonnie Schmidt, Shelly Golly, Karmen l oss, Inge Rudolph, Jo Anne Sundeen, and Sherry Holm. The record of 12 wins and 5 losses shows only a part of the victory of Northwestern 1975 volleyball season. Highlights involved beating Carleton, making the team eligible for State, and going on to win the MacCalister Invitational Tournament and the State Tournaments at Duluth. Attributing most to this outward dis¬ play of victory was the inner victory gained by the team amongst themselves and within them¬ selves. Christlike unity and love served as a witness towards others on the court, and pro¬ vided the capacity for teamwork in the sport itself. No wonder the girls were able to experi¬ ence and appreciate that greater victory as ex¬ pressed in their team song and slogan: “TO GOD BE THE GLORY!” W. Yet, by the end of the season we were recognized as the fastest team in our Conference, winning several awards and trophies. How was this remarkable feat accom¬ plished? To pul it simply, all the runners on our team cared for one another. The faster ones ran alongside the slower ones, encouraging them and pushing them beyond what they thought was their limit for endurance. The competition within our squad was keen, but not vicious. No¬ body look themselves loo seriously, “Cramps 11 our number two man and 25 year old, self-ap¬ pointed comedian saw to that. Thus, we laugh¬ ed and groaned our way into a Championship. SOUMQIL Girls Basketball The outstanding players of this season were Vickie Swanson, Gloria Bonier arid Sheila Matheson. Vickie tops the list with some exceptional percentages. She has a 17.9 point average per game, a 15.3 rebound average and is 60% in free throws. Gloria ranks a dose second with 56% in free throws, and Sheila has compiled a 46% field goal average. RESIDENCE MEETING Northwestern’s chapel is dif¬ ferent things to different peo¬ ple, To outsiders it may be an empty room that houses gold and marble for tourists to glory in; or a mute massive memoir of one peoples ' be¬ lief: or a work of aesthetic architecture; or a facility. But, to those who daily go in¬ side the chapel, it is more than a place. It is people, and with people it becomes dif¬ ferent things to different peo¬ ple at Northwestern. It be¬ comes whispering, music, shouting, silence, singing, messages, praising, media, sharing, communion, think¬ ing; a medium. It becomes the scab of irritation for ruin¬ ed plans or the epsom salt on a deep wound. It becomes an aggravated assault on a busy day or a welcomed refuge on a better day. Northwestern’s chapel is people being who they are, becoming who they will be. Chapel wjwttuifeK- ms in The Valentine Banquet, “50 ' s Day, 1 ' and Broom ball were main events of SNO-DAZIi, Students, of course, were the main attraction of those events. Not only did classmates have difficulty spotting their tight pony-tailed and greasy- haired friends garbed in a conglomerate of what may have represented the 1950’s (aftcrall, WHO remembers?), but roommates had an even tougher time recognizing one another at the banquet! Actually, the students deserving full recognition is Robin Davis’ broomball team. They did a slick job of sweeping all competitors off the ice! JJ ?
