RICHARD A. ELVEE WELCOME TO OUR PRESIDENT Days spent in prayer shall never be forgotten. For two long years we waited for God’s man to be our leader . God did not fail us; He sent you, Dr. Elvee, to be our challenger and commander. Thus, we wel¬ come you, Mr President, to our beloved School and pray God’s blessing upon your ministry with us in these days and in the days to come. ' $o teach us to number our DAYS that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom, ' 9 . « Psalm 90:12 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT DAYS Perhaps the most pathetic testimony to he found is that of Jacob who said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an MO years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been ” Days at Northwestern, by the grace of God, are not few and evil. Our testimony is like the famous committee of four lepers in Samaria. You remember they said to each other, “Why sit we here til) w ? e die? They went to the task and found food and clothing. Having found what they needed, they said, “This day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace—come, lei us go and tell the king’s household.” We want to tell you that this is a day of good tidings and in this Scroll we would like to talk about days at Northwestern. Days of service to Jesus Christ. Days of learning of His will for our lives Days of seeing His provision for our needs. Days of challenge for dedicated lives Days of occupying until He come DR RICHARD A ELVEE . 4 .v p ' ■ ' ' ■ A r ■ ■■ ■ ' r ■ O.W 1 ' 14 George J. Carlson B-Sc. in Ed. Northwestern Univer¬ sity. B.Th. The standard course was revised to present many practical items needed for the preparation of today’s pastor- evangelist, The other curriculums — ones in which students may major in the Old Testament and its languages, New Testament, Systematic Theology, or Historical Theology—are intended for the preparation of those who de¬ sire to enter the field of Christian re¬ search and teaching. This revision results in the placing of a greater em¬ phasis not only on the practical needs of the pastorate in the one case, but on the grammatical, historical, and exegetic study of the Word in the other. Taking the Word of God to a world of men involves an intimate walk with the Savior, a burning passion for those in need, and a thorough knowl¬ edge of the Gospel Therefore, these departments offer studies in the Scriptures with a view to making them “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may he complete, thoroughly fur¬ nished unto all good works. ” A look at archaeology Inca E, Johnson B.S. University of Minnesota; Christian Education. Colossi a ns 3:23, 24 Learning through teaching. Christian Education Experience is an effective teacher. Therefore, students are prepared for future responsibilities in supervised programs in churches and weekday religious education classes, A vital spiritual preparation is offered in this program which balances with spiritual and academic impression, practical opportunities for expression. Learning to know Him is the pre-requisite to spiritual service Therefore, the teaching of this department maintains a cen¬ tral emphasis on Bible study—to know His word; Pedagogy -—to emulate His methods; Psychology ' —to develop an un¬ derstanding of men, made in His image. All services are provided in the main reading room, with Room 303 available for those who prefer a measure of solitude. It ' s a long way up to the library—-just ask those who come huffing up from the cafeteria-—-but worth the climb. Periodicals, books, pamphlets, audio-visual aids—all these are there to enrich the student’s class work or provide enjoyable and worthwhile recreation for those occasional spare moments. Represen¬ tatives elected from each class make up the Student Forum of the Northwestern Schools, Eugene Ongna has been the president this year, having been elected by popular vote. Weekly prayer meetings, an organized cam¬ paign to help in the raising of funds for the Schools, an extremely fine schedule of social events have made up the major part of the Forum’s activities. In Memoriam On November 29, 1953, Catherine Sabalino, a dear friend of the students and faculty, went home to be with her Lord, Her testimony for Christ, both before and during her illness, made indelible impressions upon many We know that today Kay is just be¬ ginning eternity with her heavenly Father. In this we rejoice, yet realize that we must take her place in reaching those who still have not heard the Gospel of Christ. Foreign Missions F ellowship An early morning prayer meeting; a file on each missionary on the field; an evening meeting with films and missionary information, are but part of the work conducted by the Foreign Missions Fellowship, Bob Hess is president; David Alexander, vice president; Pat Schroder and Virginia Cook, secretaries; Kristian Sorensen, treasurer. We see and hear about those who live and die without knowing Christ. North - western ' s Missionary Conference brings to us workers from all fields who challenge us to the needs of the lost The Practical Work Program at Northwestern has a two-fold purpose: that of winning souls for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and that of training students in Christian service so they may he more effective in their future work. Singing Practical Work Preaching After the four years spent in study and actual service, stu dents may he placed in various fields of service. We feci that this is the area of the school in which the motto of North¬ western, “For the glory of God” is most perfectly carried out. Playing Reaching Placement Bureau A Cappella Choir School would not be complete without the concerts by the choir. The band is on parade! When the basketball season began, the pep band directed by Ezra Ostergard, was right there to get things off to a proper start Northwestern Concert Band . fy eather is no hindrance Open Air Northwestern students pray. Then with their Bibles and the Wordless Book they start out to meet the children at play. A word is spoken to them, a confidence is won, and the word of salvation is presented. After a decision has been made, there comes the “follow - up” period—a time when the student visits the home, meets the parents, and spends some time helping the child to grow in his spiritual life. Evangelism “Would you like to hear a story?” Interested little ones listen eagerly , “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much ” The Club serves as a means of bringing together those whom God has called out into the gospel ministry. In this way it serves as a channel for giving out practical helps that are not usually a part of the class room curriculum. From time to time throughout the year, speakers of various phases of the pastor’s work arc heard. The activity of the club branches out into the actual work of the gospel ministry. It seeks to make the young men better preachers of the unsearchable riches that are found in our Saviour, Jesus Christ, Under the guidance of Dr. G. Douglas Young, Richard Gantz and the other officers seek to lead the group. Gospel Ministers Club |aA. ' JK . vx s Jiar pd d pB S - -v w j ' ' KiH The Speech Club seeks to provide expression for students interested in that field. This year the members have participated in several ac¬ tivities, Four dramatic productions have been given: “Huckleberry Finn,” the famous old American play by Mark Tw ain; “Silas Mai¬ ner,” the story of the old English miser who loses his gold but finds happiness in an or¬ phan child; “The Little Minister,” a touching story from Scotland; “David Copperfield,” one of Dickens’ more popular works. North¬ western students are gaining much experience and recognition through the medium of de¬ bate. Interpretation is another phase of activity, iri which students taking private lessons give recitals. The outstanding event of the year in this field was a combination junior and senior recital given by Earl Vitus and John Perlman in Feb¬ ruary, They presented “The Old Man of the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway and “The Birds” by Dauphne du Maurier. Dorm Mom with some of her girls. Russell, Lyman, Stimson, Homestead or Clair One of them is home to many a Northwestern girl. Although dorm life has its many rules and regulations, there is always time for putting that bucket of water over the door. But the frivolity is but a small part of the days spent in Hawthorne. The real memories are those of study and the quiet time spent with the Lord. 107 1954 Scroll Staff Days of picture taking, days of cropping, days of wondering whether or not pictures will fit into the space, days of seeking copy, days of hunting for those little tilings that make an annual interesting, days of problems, days of laughter, days of working, days of playing—these have made up your 1954 Scroll. The staff, under the supervision of Miss Hanna, has included Jane Thornton, editor; Victor Dourte, business man¬ ager; Bill Haburn, photographer; John Periman, art editor; Dean Wood ring, sports editor; Hazel Reynolds and Delphine Coughlin, lay-out and cropping editors; Lenna Beagle, our “dark room ' 5 specialist; Myrtle Nordeen, Anita Anders, Boh Greenwood, Sonja Swanson, Jennet Vander Beek, Sally Clark, Cynthia Farrington, Esther Noyce, Elaine Schroder and Bar- tie Newsbaum, C an yon think of a famous and popular spot A round Northwestern Schools where all students and F acuity members gather—morning, noon or E vening? Cafeteria Blood pressure low, an ache or pain, the need of vitamins and pills, to say nothing of the need for an excuse from class—these are the things that keep our nurse busy at the health center. We praise the Lord for the lack of serious illness among our students, but are grateful for the fine facilities we have in case of such an illness. Any work today? Employment Students need work. Maybe for a day or two, but more probably for the entire year. The vast majority of the young people work their way through school, and find employ- merit through the office set up for that pur¬ pose—an office where one always receives a warm welcome. Evening School Northwestern’s Evening School serves an adult constituency whose needs could not be met in the Day School because of schedule These classes are held in die Memorial Hall building every Tuesday evening. Three of these are broadcast over KTIS-FM and are shared regularly by a large listening audience scattered throughout the state The Evening School is the central training ground for Sun¬ day School teachers and Christian workers for the great northwest, offering the Prelim inary Course, the Gold Seal certificate and the Teacher’s diploma of the Evangelical Teacher Training Association, Hundreds avail themselves of this study opportunity every y ear with great benefit in their spiritual lives and Christian service, according to Mr. LeRoy Gager, dean of the Evening School. The “Lit” Club at Makas Manor . The Literary Club Directed by Mrs. Makas, the student is given art opportunity to meet with others of like mind to discuss some of the liter¬ ary works lor which time is not supplied in the average curriculum. The Eagle What would a small town be without a news¬ paper? How can a school flourish without one? It cannot. So a group of interested students led by Miss Clark publish the Eagle, a newspaper which gives information to and about students and their activities. Ray Smyth was editor in the fall of the year, but he turned over his pen to Gerry Heskett at the opening of the second semester. The Vision Have you noticed the paper put out by the Foreign Mission Fellowship? Irma Fuller and her efficient staff edit this sheet which is full of vital mis¬ sionary information. Excerpts from missionary letters; hits of news about various hoards; words of encouragement to those planning on the mission field all find their way into this splendid paper. Pilot Our Northwestern Pilot is a seasoned magazine with a new, fresh impact. Under the managing editor, Mr. Stanley Cook, the magazine lias entered the general publication field. r Ihe Pilot, now thirty-four years old, will continue to be “America’s Bible Study Mag¬ azine.” Ninety percent of its readers are pastors, Bible teachers and consecrated church leaders. “N” Club Having earned a letter in inter-col legiate athletics, the members of the N Club have pledged themselves to promote a keener interest in sports and to encourage the Christ- like spirit of sportsmanship of both the players and spectators. _ ___ -1 KTIS KNWS ihis is KTIS, the radio voice of Northwestern Schools.” A familiar station break, but one which we like to hear. It gives but half the picture, however, for in Waterloo, Iowa, the call letters, KNWS, attach themselves to the Schools. KTIS has just celebrated its fifth birthday—five years of giving out the gospel in word and song to the Minneapolis area. KNWS which was acquired a year ago gives out the same message — many o£ die pro¬ grams being sent by direct line to the Iowa people. Both stations are operated on a non-commercial and non-profit basis. They are supported by the free-will gifts and offerings. Loren Bridges, director of radio, tells us “when these stations fail to he interested in souls, they will cease to have any reason to exist.” Arl in Halvorscn, Alumni president The graduates of Northwestern Schools are scattered all over the earth pro¬ claiming the Gospel of Christ. The result is that souls are saved, groups of Christians are formed into assem¬ blies and local churches. Whether it he in the churches of our home land or the sun-baked brick churches of darkest Africa, Alumni continually “hold forth the word of life.” The Alumni Association congratulates the Seniors upon the completion of their training, and welcomes them in¬ to this group of graduates. The fellows brush up their best suit or rent a tuxedo, shine their faces and slick their hair, and then pro¬ ceed on their way with a corsage in hand for a certain young lady who will be all dressed up in her prettiest formal. This year’s banquet at the AAA Country Club was particularly enjoyable because of the efforts of many students and faculty mem¬ bers who filled the evening with merriment, surprises, and spiritual blessings Looking for someone , Les? Coach Fit kering feels that it soon will become a major sport at Northwestern. 5 Tennis Bernie Vander Meiden and Mel Taylor will again lead this year’s tennis team. Tennis has not yet become a major sport but many non- official matches have been played with other Twin City schools Mat Men Gymnastics took a new turn this year with the addition of Miss Pattie Eales joining the mat- men from Northwestern, The team this year furnished half-time entertainment for many ball games. This was their only reward for llie many hours of team and individual prac¬ tice they put in each week. The Intramural program of Director Os Mor- ley’s is gaining popularity each year. This year most of ihc events got into full swing during the second semester and included many groups and individuals in the team and indi¬ vidual competition. Director Motley’s plan for the future is a sports program in which everyone can participate. This Biblican emphasis grows out of the Dallas motto — Preach the Word (2 Tim. 4:2). The entire course is Bible-centered and the entire Bible is studied in class in the Bible exposition repartment.
