Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1950 volume:

i£ . . . We spend our years as a tale that is told” Psalm 90:9 I Dedication To America’s outstanding twentieth century evangelist whose unselfish devotion to the cause of Christ has commanded the plaudits of the nation — To a young man upon whom the mantle of Dr. W. B. Riley has fallen in this ministry as evangelist, teacher, and educator — To a young man who emulates the fine qualities of a true Southern gentleman — warm hearted, gracious, and cultured — To a wise counsellor, a sincere friend and the beloved president of Northwestern Schools — This 1950 Scroll is affectionately dedicated. And there ivere giants in the earth in those days ...” Gen. 6:4 i orewvord As seconds become minutes, the minutes, hours, and hours become days — we are constantly reminded of the passing of time. Relentless time is never in retreat. With sharp precision, measured moments run in silent pageantry around the sun , Unnoticed till a cycle is complete. Illusive days are quickly shelved in neat, Plain rotes, red lettered when a task is done We would remember ' , and another one Is check-marked where a memory was sweet. The 1950 Scroll staff presents this annual publication, with the accompanying scriptural prayer — so teach us to number our DAYS.’’ IN APPRECIATION To the Editorial Staff Roland Hal berg Orville Johnson Hedwig Schwartz Marjorie Stevens Marian Plessy Shirley Marshall Luverna Morse To the Business Staff Dorothy Yates Barbara Zubyck Jeanien Henne To the Photographers Paul Bishop Donald Nelson Jack Musikov ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Mr. Arthur Segal Mrs. Lorraine Robertson Mr. Lowell Dahlberg Mr. David Bank Bureau of Engraving Bureau of Engraving Harrison Smith Co. No less could be said con- j cerning - that august body known as the faculty of Northwestern Schools. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Johnson entertained the faculty in the first social event of j the school year at the home on the Mississippi River. Throughout the year the faculty enjoyed many times of fellowship together. The Dames Club, consist¬ ing of women faculty members and wives of men faculty members was or¬ ganized during the year for times of social enjoyment among the women of Northwestern’s family. Faculty Party Faculty Party The social committee of the faculty was very active during the year. Besides the usual minor social functions, perhaps the high¬ light of the faculty year was the annual progressive dinner held on June 9th. Hosts and hostesses included Mrs. W. B. Riley, Mr. and Mrs. George Wilson, and Mr. and Mrs. William Berntsen. The Women’s Fellowship of the Northwestern Schools entertained hoard members’ wives at a dessert dinner at the home of Mrs. George Wilson on the evening of June 13th. 29 Registration Studious looking students—In- tent upon registering for classes, arranging schedules, and gener¬ ally becoming oriented. Mr. Rea Yen makes a last minute check on schedules. At least it ' s over but the shout¬ ing—meaning the treasurer ' s office is represented as the Iasi hurdle to be surmounted. Registration Mr. Paul Kaufman assists a stu¬ dent in H]ling out his schedule. Is Cheek included? I Busy little bees—the gymnasium was fairly humming as faculty counsellors assisted the students in scheduling classes. I I I l Which is the student? Mr. George Makas seems intent up¬ on seeing that Marilyn Erickson fills in the correct spaces. Day By Day Looking upward every day, Sunshine on our faces, Pressing onward every day Toward the heavenly places. Growing every day in awe, For thy name is holy; Learning every day to love With a love more lowly. Walking every day more close To our elder Brother; Growing every day more true Unto one another; Every day more gratefully Kindnesses receiving, Every day more readily Injuties forgiving. Leaving every day behind Something which might hinder Running swifter every day, Growing purer, kinder — Lord, so pray we every day; Hear us in thy pity. That we enter in at last To the holy city. Mary Butler October “0 satisfy us early with thy mercy ; that ice may rejoice and be glad all our days, Psalm 90:14 Student Forum This sagacious group is entrusted with the affairs of student government at Northwestern and is dedicated to the promoting of social life and spiritual welfare of the students by acting in a mediatorial capacity between faculty and student body. The Forum has contributed greatly to school life in the form of estab¬ lishing freshman week, regulating traffic in the corridors, assisting with the Missionary Conference, providing fellowship on Friday nights, and arranging social activities. The group consists of twelve representatives from the student body John Anderson, Allen Fadel, Betty Hoobyar, John Hyma, Frank Moore, Jack Marshall, Ralph Neighbor, Max Kershaw, Len Robinson, Leo Skinner, Forest Williams, and Bob Lillard. Mr. Gager represents the faculty. HI li - - ■-----—..— - Halloween Party “And the gobblin’ll get you — if you don’t watch out”—The Student Forum and the Choral Club play host to what passes as a Halloween party without a doubt. Evening School The purpose of Northwestern’s Evening School is to make available to men and women of the Twin Cities area a sound, Bible centered course of instruction. The various classes are designed to provide an understanding of the English Bible, to promote self study in the Word, to impart a knowledge of the secrets of victorious Christian living and to assist in the expression of that life in Christian service. As world evangelism was the purpose for which this school was founded, so it is the heart-beat of the curriculum. The Christians of the Twin City area have responded enthusiastically, increasing the Evening School enrollment to 367. The curriculum has been expanded to include new subjects such as: Modern Science and the Bible, Ap¬ plied Christian Art, Archeology’s Dependence on the Bible, and Present Day Problems of the Mission Field. The people who come to Northwestern’s Evening School form a cross section of evangelical Christianity in this locality. They are housewives, business men, teachers, nurses, university and high school students, steno¬ graphers, and pastors who have dedicated their Tuesday evenings to the im¬ provements of their talents for the service of Christ. In addition to the basic core of Bible study instruction is offered in music, children’s work, practical speech, Sunday school administration, and youth work. In four years it is possible to earn a Northwestern Evening School certificate; or the Evangelical Teachers Training certificate. Many who do not wish credit merely audit the courses. The evening meal is provided in our new cafeteria, enabling business people to come straight from the office or place of business and enjoy the food and fellowship here. May we invite you to enroll and share the blessings of our evening school fulfilling its motto “Knowledge on Fire.” Youth For Christ Students from Northwestern are constantly finding Youth for Christ a source of inspiration and an opportunity for service. The Youth rallies which are held in the Minneapolis Municipal Auditorium under the direction of George Wilson celebrated their sixth anniversary of March 25. Outstanding musical groups and inspirational speakers have appeared during the year. Among the unusual offerings this year were the attendance and testimonies of concerts from Dr. Graham’s Los Angeles campaign: Louis Zamperine, track star, Jim Vans, underworld associate, and Stuart Hamblen, radio star from Hollywood. These meetings commanded audiences of between ten and twenty thous¬ and people with hundreds professing salvation as a result of hearing the Word. Youth for Christ leaders including Dr. Robert Cook, Dr. Torrey John¬ son, and Dr. William Graham have been heard. The Practical Work Depart¬ ment ably directed by Mr. LeRoy Gager and Mr. Donald Rosenberger has directed the personal workers, a great many of them being Northwestern students. Many musical groups from the schools, including the Crusaders quartet, the Jubilaires, the A Cappella choir and the Oratorio choir have con¬ tributed to the programs. Not To Be Ministered Unto 0 Lord, pray That for this day I may not swerve By foot or hand. From Thy command, Not to he served, hut to serve. This, too, l pray, That for this day No love of ease Nor pride prevent My good intent, Not to he pleased, but to please. And if I may I ' d have this day Strength from above To set my heart In heavenly art. Not to he loved, hut to love. Maltbie D. Babcock Homecoming and Founder’s Week Conference In the fall of each year the Northwestern Schools welcome the alumni to the Alumni Homecoming, which is now known as the Founder’s Week Conference. This year’s meeting was a glor¬ ious five days of fellowship and spiritual feasting with Dr. Albert Hughes of Toronto, Canada, Mr. Thomas Rees from London, England, Dr. Torrey Johnson, and Dr. H. H. Savage leading the students and alumni into the depths of the Word of God. Dr. Merv Rossell of Rochester, Minnesota, president of the Alumni Association, was master of ceremonies at the morning, afternoon and evening sessions. Each day overflowed with added blessing, and a spirit of revival and consecration prevailed. Dr. and Mrs. John Siemens of Minneapolis, graduates of the classes of ’24 and ’23, respectively, were hosts at the Alumni Tea on the first afternoon of that great week. On the second evening, in Moyer Hall Gym, was held the 36th Annual Alumni Banquet at which members of the Class of 1925 were the honored guests. Of the original thirty-three members, eleven were present. The earliest class represented was the class of 1904, in the person of Mrs. M. Hursh of Hibbing, Minnesota. Also present was John Wylie of Wayzata, class of 1909. Alumni gathered from states near and far; Iowa, Illinois, North and South Dakota, Mich¬ igan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota were well represented. 42 Secretarial Department Northwestern students are seeking to serve their Lord in many vocations and occupations. The secretarial department has shown a steady, consistent increase in enrollment during the past few years. Course offerings in this field are very complete, includ¬ ing: Bookkeeping, Typing, Shorthand, Office Procedure, and In¬ troduction to Business Methods. Both beginning and advanced shorthand courses are offered. Gregg Credential Awards in both shorthand and typing are awarded each month for progress and achievement in the partic¬ ular field being studied. Northwestern’s commercial students and graduates are oc¬ cupying many fine positions throughout the United States. The department is under the direction of Mrs. Helen Baxter. Founder’s Vision The Northwestern Schools are a monument to the vision of one of God’s choicest servants—Dr. W. B. Riley. It was he who saw the need for Christian training for Christian workers in a Bibl e School; it was he who—burdened over the need for a more educated ministry—established a Theological Semi¬ nary; it was he who—recognizing a move away from orthodox training— established a College of Liberal Arts. Throughout America, foreign countries and the islands of the sea are scattered graduates of these schools who owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. W. B. Riley for his faithfulness to the voice of God in the establishment of the Northwestern Schools. ’Hffl The vision of Dr. Riley became a reality ' when Memorial Hall was completed and classes were held in the new building beginning September, 1948. Although the founder of the Northwestern Schools did not live to see the fulfillment of his final dream, he had already envisioned it from afar off. Dr. Riley ' s youthful spirit was always apparent in his revealed desire to press on toward new achievements. Memorial Hall now houses administration offices, Moyer Gymnasium, classrooms and K.T.I.S. studios. New facilities are expedient with the addition of new faculty person¬ nel, student enrollers, and expanded opportunities which become the school’s obligations. V 45 Life At Northwestern ... A square-table discussion takes place in General Psychology class. Not a moment is wasted at Northwestern as evening school classes are well under way. Many bodies and hearts will be made warm this winter by clothes that are packed and shipped by members of the Foreign Missions Fellowship. Vocal and instrumental quartets, trios, and ensembles have sprung up all over school and are out in service for their Lord. 46 I I .., Goes On A very, very popular and much-visited spot—the mail box. “What would school life be without parties and socials?” asks Earle. Which way are you going? The halls look like Grand Central during the passing of classes. Many students are glad for the relieving of the pocket-book stress through part-time student employment. ' c -■ 47 Los Angeles Campaign Dr. Billy Graham achieved national and international fame and the name of being America’s number one evangelist as he attracted the attention of the world through the Los Angeles Revival campaign. The meetings began on September 25 and continued until November 20. Pictured above are some of the outstanding converts from this campaign. Other outstanding meetings conducted by Dr. Graham and his party in¬ cluded the Boston campaign which began there on New Years’ eve and con¬ tinued until January 14 followed by the Columbia, South Carolina series of meetings beginning on February 19 and continuing until March 12. In this latter series of meetings, organist was Northwestern’s own Professor Wil¬ liam Berntsen with KTIS Radio Pastor, George L. Edstrom, assisting with the follow-up meetings. America’s largest religious gathering was held on Boston Common April 23 when Doctor Graham spoke to an audience of 50,000. Radio station KTIS carried the broadcast of the meeting by direct wire from Boston. Mr. Gerald Beavan assisted during this series of meetings as press representa¬ tive. 48 Pictured above are Mrs. William Graham, Cliff Barrows and Mrs. Bar- rows. Mr, and Mrs. Barrows are musical members of the Billy Graham evan¬ gelistic party. 49 •V. Missionary Roll Call A V li I C A ANDERSON, FAYE ' 42 Gar, via Bauchi t N. LUCILLE 48 All information given in this list is as of April 15, 1950. 53 Forensics expanded in 1949-50 to include many new activities. Chief among them were the dramatic and oral interpretation programs. Both cast and student body will long remember “The Rock” for its effective presentation of gospel truth. Junior recitals headlined the interpretation programs presented by both faculty and students. The Christmas pageant at Youth for Christ, “Twas the Night Before Christmas” with Dean Hartill and other pro¬ grams throughout the year offered speech training as well as student entertainment. “St. Elmo,” a three-act play, climaxed the year in this department with a beautiful story centered around a Christian life. Debate Last year’s debate program of four major tournaments grew to include six this year. Four debaters started the year with a trip to Wheaton and Bloomington, Illinois. Between semesters, eight debaters travelled to Moor¬ head State Teacher’s College and came home with the best record made to that time by Northwestern debaters. This year’s debate question was one of great importance: “Resolved that the U. S. should nationalize the basic non- agricultural industries.” The whole squad participated in the Eau Claire State Teacher’s College Tournament and the University of Minnesota Tournament with four debaters visiting the University of Wisconsin and the Northwest Tournament at St. Thomas College. Debaters also engaged in oratory and extemporaneous speaking competition as well as several rounds of discussion. jSS Boy ' s Basketball With the fast-breaks of Anderson, rebounds of Cook, and those “s wish¬ ers” of Orve “Lefty” Johnson, there was always some excitement to be found at a basketball game. The cheers in Moyer Gym verified that. This was one of the many groups representing Northwestern Schools in sports, playing a schedule with teams from junior colleges, Minnesota College Conference reserves and freshmen, and some varsity teams of good college caliber, the “Eagles” found themselves in some fast competition. In spite of the competition the boys continually worked for victories. What they lacked in scoring they made up for in determination and persistency. Among the teams played was North Park College of Chicago. This and the trip to Mayville, North Dakota, were probably the “high spots” of the sea¬ son. Other teams played were Concordia Junior College, St. Cloud Teachers College, Mankato Teachers College, Rochester Junior College, Macalester, Gustavus Adolphus, and the University of Minnesota Agricultural School. BACK ROW—Orville Johnson, Robert Lelm, Vernon Hmtermeyer, Ralph Anderson, James Cook, MIDDLE ROW—Oswald Morlcy, Lynn Holm, Richard Manning, Floyd Habich, FRONT ROW—Clayton Pyche, Donald A Idem Marvin Zwickey, Ted McClintic, Wayne Smith. In Action Because the EAGLES work at winning and also at playing a clean, fair game, sports activities never fail to provide a thrill to those fan students who attend regularly. In the game, on the bench, or in the stands, all are united by a loyalty to Northwestern and its central theme, Christ. The Bells On Christmas Day I heard the hells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good will to men! And thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good will to men! And in despair 1 bowed my bead: ' There is no peace on earth,’ l said: ' For bate is strong, And- mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men!’ Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: ' God is not dear; nor doth He sleep! The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good will to men!’ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow December For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord Luke 2:11 r i Band The Northwestern Band, under the direction of Mr. Oliver Mogck, was heard in concert twice during the school year. Reper¬ toire for this musical organization included all of the better- known marches. Officers for the year included: Jack Marshall, President; Rose Marie Boren, Secretary-Treasurer; Jean Renberg, Librarian; L. Robert Lawson, Properties Manager. Christmas Concert The annual Christmas concert produced by the Northwestern Choral Club was given Wednesday and Thursday evenings, December 7 and 8. This formal occasion was marked by a reception which followed the presentation. Assisting with the program were the Jubillaires, Professors George Makas, Reuben Johnson, and Oliver Mogck. 61 A Cappella Choir CHOIR OFFICERS: Clifford Lue, President; Les Sapsford, Vice President; Penny Bjorklund, Treasurer; Mary Caribides, Robe Chairman; Lynn Bulla and Roland Halberg, Social Chairmen. The A Cappella Choir, under the direction of Professor Wil¬ liam Bernsten, numbers 80 voices chosen on a competitive basis from the entire student body. Membership in the Choir is depend¬ ent upon superior scholarship, outstanding Christian character, and genuine muscianship. A two-fold objective is maintained: first, to sing the Gospel story to thrill hearts: and second, to de¬ velop an appreciation for the best in sacred choral music. Along with the presentation of their Annual Christmas Con¬ certs in Memorial Auditorium, the Choir looks forward each year to an extensive tour made through various parts of the country. This year they toured the Northwest, from April 1 to 23, making- appearances in Sheridan and Cheyenne, Wyoming; Billings and Bozeman, Montana; Spokane, Seattle, and Tacoma, Washington; Salem, Eugene, Portland, and Ontario, Oregon; Denver, Ft. Col¬ lins, and Colorado Springs, Colorado; Lincoln and Omaha, Neb. 62 Oratorio Choir Under the direction of Professor Ruben Johnson, the Oratorio choir presents an outstanding musical performance. The choir which is made up of two hundred members presented both the “Messiah” and the “Elijah” during the school year. Officers for the choir included: Omar Barocio, President; Bud Johnson, Vice President-Librarian; Marcelline McClellan, Secretary-Treasurer. 63 International Club Seated—Helen Hassapopoulou, Greece; Myra Wang, China; Lydia Schneider, Germany; Shirley Edge]], England; Winnie Bentley, England; Alicia Cabezas, Costa Rica; Kan Torjesen, Norway; Julia DeLucia, Italy. Standing—George Urban, France; Alexander Koulakoff, France; Jean Marot, France; Lex Smith, Scotland; Guenther Vahlberg, Germany; David Harrison, Scotland; Carlos Roeasalvo, Argentina; Leslie Edgell, England; Tiat Han Tan, Indonesia; Henri Perron, France; George McCracken, North Ireland; Vivian Laird, North Ireland; Regina Loyola, Cuba; Omar Barrochio, Mexico; Kenneth McConley, Scotland; James Chambers, North Scotland. Northwestern’s International Club represents twenty-eight foreign students from fourteen countries. Officers of the club are Leslie Edgell, President, Myra Wang, Secretary, and Henri Per¬ ron, Treasurer. d 0 LATIN A ME PICA ' PRAYER BAND INDIA {ASIA EMYFR BAND PRAY E RIBAND - Prayer Band Missionaries and Christian workers throughout the world are the object of prayers when the Northwestern Student Body unites in prayer before the school day begins. The conference was dedicated to the challenge of missions. Under the leadership of Dr. Harry Stam, head of the Missions department, and with the able assistance of the Foreign Missions Fellowship group, the conference accomplished tremendous things for the kingdom of God. Principal speakers for the conference were Mrs. Ruth Stull, Dr. Robert Cook, Dr. Oswald Smith, Dr. Clyde Taylor, Dr. R. R. Brown and Rev. David Johnson. The clays were full, with three sessions being held each day. Each evening preceding the message moving pictures of the most crucial mission fields were shown. 68 ROW ONE—Geneva Williams, Gladylou Mills, Evelyn Clingingsmith, Phyllis Jacobson, Irma Lee Joyce, Wilma Ebert. ROW TWO—Lei and Maxson, Petty Singer, Eleanor Smith, Miriam Andersen, Betty Hoobyar, Lorraine Havlisch, Delbert Kuehl. ROW THREE—Alicia Gnbezus, Dorothy Strnad, Jean Swinborne, John S win borne, Ilortense Brown, Leola Rust. Missionary Medicine Graduates Our class motto, “Missionary Medicine—a Wedge for the Gospel,” describes the specific purpose of our studying the prac¬ tical angles of medicine. We realize our limitations in the under¬ taking of medical work, hut what we have learned will be useful in His service as missionaries. We recognize the value of this type of work in the bearing of precious fruit for Christ, so it is our aim to utilize the training for this purpose. The Lord has definitely called some of us to certain fields of service, and some have been accepted by boards with some support and potential sailing dates; others are still seeking God’s will. Where and whenever God thrusts us out into the fields, “white unto harvest,” we are ready. Your prayers are requested for His direction in our lives. Missionary Medicine Mitchell Hall houses the Department of Missionary Medicine and the school infirmary where the students receive some of their practical experience. Many classes are spent in practical training through the teaching and supervision of local doctors. This ex¬ perience will be greatly valued in our ministry on the mission field, a way into the hearts of those without Christ. DOCTORS DR. WESLEY II. BURNHAM DR. TIIORVALD A. HANSEN DR. STANLEY P. Our own vice- president, T. W. Wilson, chats with Dr. Fred Jordan of California in the top left picture. Top center is Rev. George Ziemer of the Wisconsin Tabernacle in Milwaukee and then is Dr. S. All day long the Presence lingered. All day long He stayed with me: And we sailed in perfect calmness O ' er a very troubled sea. Other ships were blown and battered. Other ships were sore distressed. But the winds that seemed to drive them, Brought to us both peace and rest. Then I thought of other mornings. With a keen remorse of mind, When I, too, had loosed the moorings, With the Presence left behind. So l think 1 know the secret, Learned from many a troubled way; You must seek Him in the morning. If you want Him through the Day. Ralph Cushman European Department A number of years ago there was a burden on the hearts of Northwestern- ers to do evangelistic work in Europe, and so it was conceived that missionaries should be trained for the Russian ministry. The Russian Department was formed and Dr. V. Vojta, under the leadership of Dr. W. B. Riley, was appointed dean. Since, however, the European situation has changed so rapid¬ ly and there are many people who need to hear the gospel, the European Department was formed to take the place of the Russian Department and it includes French, Spanish, German, and Russian languages. A number of students on the picture are definitely preparing to go to Europe to do mission work among the various peoples. Today we have four teachers and over one hundred students in the language department. These teachers include: Miss Shirley Johnson, instructor in Spanish and French, Miss Violet Munter, in¬ structor in German, Mr. Max Eisenbraun, instructor in Russian and Dr. Vojta. 160 Foreign Missions Fellowship The Fellowship provides an outlet for students interested in and preparing for service in foreign fields. This active group was responsible for a weekly publication entitled “Vision.” Dr. Harry Stam, faculty advisor, gives counsel and encouragement to mem¬ bers of the Fellowship; Henry Hazelton edited the weekly publi¬ cation ; President Roy Irving was the spark which caused the sign in the picture upper right to be true; Waldrom Scott lends an interested ear and helping hand to Harriet Tenhoff in the office work while Roberta Spurlin checks the files with Mae Koksma, efficient Foreign Missions Fellowship Secretary. 161 Practical Work The highways . . . the by-ways . . . the hedges . . . this summer two hundred eighty-five Northwestern students spent all or part of their summer in teaching and directing vacation Bible schools. Geographically, they invaded the sections of the United States west through Montana and Colorado, east to Delaware, south through the Ozarks and Arkansas and north to the Canadian border. Northwestern’s Daily Vacation Bible School program started many years ago in the hearts of three young men and was known as Student Evangelism. It has been used mightily of the Lord to bring the gospel to many all over the country. 163 mm On To The Goal On to the goal! Press on! Blind, deaf, and sometimes dumb , Along the uphill, blood-marked road. Hard after Christ, press on!” August I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of (,od in Christ Jesus ' Philipjiiaiis 3:1 l Northwestern Conference The buildings, dormitories and meeting houses as well have been planned and designed by Dr. William Paul who directs the Mission Farms activities. There are rustic bridges, fort-styled dormi¬ tories, igloos and tepees, dotting the grounds providing beauty and comfort for the campers. Shaded walks beside the lake, con¬ venient tables and benches for picnickers, and a new lunch stand all add to the interest and enjoyment of days spent in communion with nature and with nature ' s God. i i 166 t S Young people attending the Medicine Lake Conference find hours of relaxation and opportunities for fellowship. Dr. Graham and Beverly Shea enjoy a conference with some of the young people. T. W. Wilson, Cliff Barrows, and Merve Rosell put on their best smiles for the cameraman. Dr. John Siemens and Dr. Graham con¬ fer as T. W. Wilson and an unidentified on-looker listen attentive¬ ly. A new lunch stand outside the door of the tabernacle seems to beckon some to refreshments. Outstanding speakers from the world over are brought to the conference at Medicine Lake each year to bring messages to those who attend the camp. Dr. Graham converses with Dr. Harry Ironside, former pastor of Moody Church in Chicago and well- known conference speaker on the steps of Youth Chapel. A typical audience is pictured as they listen attentively to the message being presented from the Word of God. Dean J. Edwin Hartill, always a conference favorite, enjoys fellowship with Northwestern stu¬ dents who gather at the front of the tabernacle after each meet¬ ing. The hillside service at the vesper hour is always an inspirational part of the day.
