Election to a position in the annual Hall of Fame is the highest honor a student can attain at Northwest. Their selection came in the second primary when they defeated runners-up James Gordon and Pearlie Wilson for the honors. Bob is president of the Student Government Association, second vice president of Phi Beta Lambda, a member of the V I P Club, and was president of the 1968-1969 Freshman Class, He was also elected sophomore favorite. 'Snooky' is treasurer of the Women's Council, vice president of the V I P Club, a cheerleader for two years, the outstanding student in education, and was a maid in the 1969 Homecoming Court. 27 Pamela McPhail and Jack Clayton were among those honored by their fellow students in the Who's Who election. McLendon, president of Northwest since 1953. The dedication was made by Don Bartlett, president of the Board of Trustees, on behalf of the'Board. Speaker at the service was Congressman Jamie L. Wliitten. A portrait of the revered president, which was hung in the lobby, was presented by his family.,Another presentation was a silver service for the presidents' suite, donated by the Board of Trustees in honor of President McLendon. He friglalj responded to the tributes honoring 'him. 1 44 Li .i Homecoming Queen Miss Kathleen Callicott of Memphis was chosen queen of Homecoming by vote of the student body. Her coronation came after the services dedicating McLendor1 Center and was held on the steps of the Center. Student Govern- ment Association President Bob Harris crowned the queen, who was escorted by Billy Hopkins. Her reign continued through the Homecoming parade and the reception honoring President and Mrs. McLendon. Witli her court Miss Callicott was presented again at halftime of the football game. Queen Kathleen, sophomore liberal arts major, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Callicott. 4 Homecoming Maids Miss Vicki 'Snooky' McArthur, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. james F. Weird, funny, and glamorous characters appeared at the Halloween dance sponsored by the Sophomore Class. Christmas came early all over the campus. Christmas trees glittered, Santa visited the campus, presents were exchanged, and parties were the order of the day daily for two weeks preceding the closing of school. Spring holidays coincided with Easter, and most students left for home and all points of the compass. 459' I' I X J. Moberly of Her- nando, was Northwest's first representa- tive in last year's Miss Mississippi Pageant. preliminary to the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. Chosen by a panel of judges at Northwest, the brunette beauty was named a runner-up in the finale of the state contest. The reigning Miss North- west, five-feet eight-inches tall and measur- ing 36-24-36, sang for her talent act. '20 Union series presents entertainment plus The variety of entertainment offered by the McLendon Union program in its first year sparked the enthusiasm of stu- dents. There was something for everyone. Young, Benton Far-sighted Board of Trustees encourages NVVJC development The 30-member Board of Trustees of Northwest Mississippi Junior College has been an inspiration to the ad- ministrative staff, faculty, and student body of the institution through their desire to have Northwest the best col- lege in all the land. From the one who has served since the establishment of Northwest as a junior college to those who have come on the board within the present year, all have an attitude and philosophy of education that has encouraged the growth and development of the college until it has become one of the four largest in the State. Carrying out the directives of the Board of Trustees, the Administration of Northwest has expanded the curricula, increased the physical facilities and opportunities for youth and adults, and acquired the services of an excellent, dedi- cated faculty. Dean stimulates attitude Student records identify The success of Northwest Mississippi junior College is determined by the ef- fectiveness of imparting knowledge to students. Although the education of a student is not confined to the classroom, the impact of the classroom is the pri- mary purpose of the institution. The Dean of the college carried much responsibility for the atmosphere of learning that prevails at Northwest. The faculty, competent, personable edu- cators, are devoted not only to the task of instruction but also to stimulating in 9, atmosphere for learning ' business of Registrar's office students the desire for knowledge and for self-fulfillment. Their interests, too, go beyond the classroom to the many extracurricular activities on and off cam- pus. Iv' The Rangers roared from 27 points behind in the second half and whipped Hinds 44-54 in the season opener on the road before three consecutive defeats shattered their dreams of a good season. Eventual conference champion Pearl River escaped with a 27-20 victory, East Mississippi won a 14-0 shutout at Co- lumbus, and Itawamba tacked on a 35-21 decision at North- west. Coach Cox's squad battled Mississippi Delta to a 7-7 deadlock on the road to make the record 1-3-1 midway through the season, but things were not to get any better. Northeast smashed the Rangers 40-27 at home, then Southwest chalked up the season's second whitewash against Northwest 27-0. The only other victory of the season was in a road game. After the Rangers struggled with East Central through three scoreless quarters, they pushed across two touchdowns in the final stanza to capture a 12-6 victory. Holmes won the final conference contest of the season 24-6, and the Murray State University freshmen captured a see-saw 25-23 contest that wound up the season. Both were home games for the Rangers. The lead changed hands four times in the Murray game. Freshman end Thomas Thompson of Oxford was elected to the All-State defensive team after the season. Rangers Go to State In spite of the disappointing loss to Perkinston that cut short their bid to chalk up Northwest's first state basketball championship, the Rangers did establish a record to be proud of. And they did it in spite of the experts With only three sophomores back from last year, the ball club was not even rated as a prob- able contender for the north division title. Yet en route to a 15-11 overall record, that same underdog team scrapped from behind time after time to win. Eventually it finished runnerup to Itawamba for the north division crown-after whipping the Indians twice in regular season play -and earned the berth opposite Perkinston in the state playoffs. Only the Ole Miss freshman and Perkinston among the season's opponents did not lose to the Rangers at least once. And Perkinston won the state championship with only one defeat all season, while the Baby Rebels also lost just one contest. Qcontinued on page 146, I44 .i l I Nobody likes to lose. There is no consolation for it. There is only promise of the next time. But for the 1969-70 season, it must be said that the Rangers came back from a slow start to log one of the most outstanding, most dedicated, and most heartwarm- ing seasons ever put forth by a Northwest basketball team. And they went into the record books as the first team under coach Henry B. Koon to make it to the state tournament, no small accomplishment in this cutthroat conference. In the statistics department, sophomore guard Larry Farmer paced the team in scoring with a 24.7 average. Sophomore forward Eunice fCaseyj Lipford was next with a 19.5 mark. The only other player in double figures was sophomore guard Verbon Maness with a 10.0 mark. Maness led the team in rebound- ing, averaging 8.4 per game. Lipford was next with 7.3 per outing. There were a few rough spots along the way, and the final record was not as good as it had been for the past two seasons. But in the end, the team's performance on the floor in game after game was what marked it as a great one-one that never gave in to the odds, no matter how overwhelming. 1969-70 RESULTS Northwest East Miss .... For the first time in history the Sophomore Class of Northwest has official class rings. Pins for the coeds are also popular. The final approved design, symbolic of the college and of the academic and technical curricula, is believed to be one that will be in the best tradition of the college for years to come. The scholarship fund, initiated by sophomores two years ago, has been a continuant project of the Class. More than 351200, donated by individual class members, has been awarded in scholarships to freshmen. Freshman Class registers largest number in history One thousand and fourteen freshmen registered at Northwest in the fall of 1969. This is the larg- est Freshman Class both in number and in percentage of the total student enrollment in the history of the college. Of the number, 589 were males and 425 were females. The Freshman Class also has the distinction of having the most enthusiastic and responsible leader- ship and best overall participation in college affairs of any first-year class in recent years, according to officials. The ROCKETEER staff has tried to give a panoramic view of the year. There's been fsee picture below, Billy Dugger, who promised to shoot everything that moved with his camera and almost did, there was Becky, Hardin, who typed, cropped pictures, stamped, did whatever was on hand at the time and always with a smile, there's Margaret Gray, our fand Mrs. Meacham'sj girl Friday, who did some of everything includ- ing photography, then there's your editor. Blaine Baggett and Bob Coker handled sports in fine fashion. And therels also Mrs. Meacham, our advisor, who filled in the spots and taught us, among other things, that teachers in college are not teachers, they are instruc- tors. There have been others to whom we thank for helping when we needed them most. Sometimes it's been fun, sometimes a struggle. We've probably missed some things- the photographers just weren't in the right place at the right time-but' the book is full of memories. May we hope that they are good ones! Whatever the experience has been, all of us are bound together by those things which we have shared, just as we are bound together within the pages of this yearbook.
